Happiness Does Not Wait is a composition written and originally performed by the Icelandic composer/producer/musician Ólafur Arnalds. It first appeared as the ninth and penultimate track on the album Erased Tapes Collection V released in 2013. Ólafur composed the score for the 2013 ITV series Broadchurch, for which he won the 2014 BAFTA TV Craft Award for Best Original Music.
There is something of the flickering candle in this music - the interplay of light and shadow conjuring and distorting time and place, images, memories, hopes, regrets, nostalgia, and anticipation. This particular candle magic is liminal, fleeting and elusive, but it is always dancing.
Nearly Dark's animated interpretation of the music is a sympathetic attempt to capture the hypnagogic and equivocal feel of the piece.
