Hansons Marathon Method | with Luke Humphrey, Running Coach

Planning on doing a marathon this year?
"Hansons Marathon Method tosses out mega-long runs and high-mileage weekends-two old-fashioned running traditions that often injure and discourage runners. Runners using the Hansons method will gradually build-up to the moderate-high mileage required for marathon success, spreading those miles more sensibly throughout the week. Running easy days mixed with precisely paced speed, strength, and tempo workouts, runners will steel their bodies and minds to run the hardest final miles of the marathon-and finish strong."

Hansons method is much less based on the long run and much more based on speed work and difficult tempo runs. It is a great plan that works backwards from a target pace. If you follow the plan, you WILL be ready for your target pace on race day! Don’t be fooled because the cumulative fatigue takes its toll but it works.

Thanks, Chris. I haven't actually tried the method yet but I think I'll do it for my Spring marathon. Seems like cumulative fatigue is something people on these plans talk about a lot. It's probably part of the mechanism by which the training works.

Thanks for the interview/information. I've listened to Luke's podcasts, and have used the HMM for 3 marathons now (working on #4!) and have found it to be much more reasonable (despite the 6 days a week commitment) and has left me better prepared than traditional approaches I've used in the past. Even so, I learned more about the plan and how to approach and/or modify it from your post. Thanks again!

Thanks Peter. Yeh, it’s a very different method from others that I’ve used myself. I haven’t tried it yet but used the ideas with some of my injured athletes who don’t tolerate really long runs and it has worked great. I think I’ll give it a try for my Spring 2023 marathon and I can spare myself 3 hour long runs in -30 degrees this winter! I did it at 7min pace I got too 13 mile then started upping the pace too 6.38-6.45 pace by 23 mile but unfortunately I maybe upped my pace too much then got a bad stitch maybe because taking on too much water so last 3 mile was tough but still finished 6:58 per mile average. I'm looking forward too getting back fit too start plan too do 6:50 pace sub 3 I'm 47 but been out for a year practically with long covid I did a half last week in 1:34 so along way too go but I'm super confident I'll be back fit and breaking 3 I'm 47 age is just a number you age in reverse with this plan keep them easy runs nice and easy that's the secret and get your paces on point

Awesome Carl. Although I run in min/km so I only kind of followed this description 😂 If you're interested in looking into your hydration strategy in a little more detail, Andy Blow of Precision Hydration joined me on the show recently so I'd certainly suggest you check out that episode: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGyW2dadpZatZaw.html&ab_channel=MatthewBoydPhysio
