    I mean, nothing will ever be perfect. A lot of these design faults seem to stem from being designed by people who have not spent much time out on a yacht, so they don't realise something may not be practical or useful. And if we don't tell them, how will they know?! That's my point of view anyway.

    Great review - keep 'em coming! It's great when someone like Nick actually sails the boat and can share his honest thoughts afterwards. Especially when compared to the glossy magazines (Yachting World anyone?) where the "reviewer" just tags along for a few hours and then writes a puff piece based on the marketing material. And in fact, I would go even further - I understand that there were a number of guest on the boat for the whole week. What did they think? What was it like for a larger woman to take a shower in that crimpy little forward head? What was it like to make some tea under sail in that super-scary open galley where you'd be thrown all over the place? Exactly how akward is it to handle the winches from a turned sitting position (it looked pretty bad to me). Real scenarios and use cases are worth their weight in gold - even if the interior design very pretty to look at. Good work Nick!

    Hahaha no puff pieces here! I will have to ask my wife (a larger woman) to jump on-board the 460 next time we have the opportunity and see what she has to say about room to move in the forward head. I mean, I am not small myself but she always seems to pick up on details I tend to miss. I do know that we have sailed quite a few models, both Hanse and not-Hanse with long open galleys and she actually prefers it that way. But then we are in the Adriatic, we are aboard mainly in the summer when the winds aren't as blustery and she doesnt often have to boil the kettle when we're on a heel!

    Very practical review. As owner of a 460 (2023) our experience with the bimini is different from that shown in the video. We have the Hanse bimini option with framework attached as far outboard as possible giving easy access past spray hood. In fact, we find access from cockpit to side deck stepping on locker just forward of the helm is very easy. As for the hinged seats at the stern, we do not have a central BBQ console so do not need to raise the port & stbd seats but still agree the small step down to the bathing platform is rather awkward.

We were invited by Hanse to film and review the boat, and it is great to see that some of our snags have been fixed, but there is still a long way to go before I buy one. Yes what a great review, Thanks for showing us the good and bad points of this boat. They want to charge you an outrageous price for the electric operation of the swim platform, that's why you only got a piece of rope, no pulleys, nothing. The ladder for the swim platform is a joke. Not worth buying the boat with that setup. Oh, and good luck getting the teak for the cockpit seats from them, I'll eat my shorts if they deliver that to you without a fight.! I was considering one of these, but it brings back too many memories of the disastrous experience we had with the 505 we bought.... Not going back there.

    Thanks for the great review Nick! I think this boat is one of the first hulls, since its delivered in 2022 (right?) which means some of the quality related issues are just because of the production process/quality control not fully settled yet. Regarding the bimini - I think the bimini is fitted by the charter company, not the factory, and the template is used from 455/458, which are not as wide as 460, hence the location issues. Autopilot location - I think it is the same place where you can find it on some "racing" yachts, so you are sitting on the side and have access to autopilot. But the design issues like opening of the lazarettes or bathroom doors - these need a solution :) Thanks again!

  • @45DegreesSailing

    @45DegreesSailing

    11 ай бұрын

    Thanks :) Actually on one of the shorts I did regarding the autopilot control issue the Hanse dealer responded as such: "The reason for that is that with the basic navigation package you only have one chart plotter which is starboard. You have a key with a shortcut for the autopilot controls on the starboard plotter and you use it on the plotter while on the port side you would not have any autopilot control if it was not put there. If you consider it as this it is actually very logical. :) " Which.. sure, lol if you have the basic.. And if you have two full plotters? Then put it where it should be! 🤣

    Good review Nick - re the anchor chain and bow roller design you showed, there is already a good/simple fix for this from Hanse, they advised the dealer network many many months ago. It prevents the anchor chain jumping out of the bow roller as youve seen on that particular setup.

    Hanse is owned by a Private Equity firm, so run for pure profit and therefore easy to see shortcuts in quality and cost saving. Not a bad boat, but firstly designed for a nice time in the marina or at anchor. Sailing qualities come after that and they are also not that cheap anymore with good spec

    lol yes I know you can do this. Not the point though. Plus given the angles its no a healthy way to lift such a weight pivoting on the pushpit rails. And, if people are not aware and careful then they can overwinch it and damage the platform and the pushpit. This is more to demonstrate what in my mind is a design fault. I think manual lift should not be an option and this needs an electric lift on it.

    Interesting comments, I am considering buying a 460. if I am correct you can have dual throttle controls mounted on the panel at each helm position it’s an optional extra. I would agree about that little step at the stern and the lazarette The boarding ladder comment was very interesting and I would have to find another method along with installing stainless plates on the Bow Spirit either side of the anchor roller. I know it’s sound bizarre, but I feel there are always modifications that you would make to make the seats work. But great overview

    Wow. You should really consider alternatives or wait until you have seen or better, sailed improved version. That anchor chain and constraints around the helm station are not acceptable compromises. Unless you are going to love in port. This is not a sailor’s design.

    @@gjohanl hi, I have looked at the the 460 several times. In fact when you take your time and research other yachts all have there problems. I haven’t found one yet were I won’t be investing in modifications, but the new 460 ticks most of the boxes and this is nothing that can’t be fixed with the right investment and selections etc. However the more I learn the better the schedule ready for discussion at the point of purchase.

    Great to see the conversation around this. And there is always a way to adapt certain issues. The bow roller issue is not a hard fix at all. So as much as I see it as a design flaw, its manageable at low cost. The seats are more about which configuration suits your needs then up the quality and execution. And yes as an optional (quite pricey) extra you can go to electric throttle and a second throttle on the other helm station. I like this configuration.

    This is the first design of Hanse, which Med boat owners would like, in terms of seriously increased refrigeration capacity, and also higher volume holding tanks. However you have to have 3 cabin 3 head version, or preferably workshop room version instead of ster starboard head which a deep freeze and washer dryer could be mounted, but definetely not 4 cabin layout. Until you have shown I did not realised how difficult to open the cockpit closet due to wrong design of table. Also the plce behind the steering wheel is not safe. Hydraulically opened transom is a must no way. I have a question. Would you advice second forestay and reacher which according to my point of view this should be driven electrically. Overal this boat is sufficiant if you are not looking for excellency. Thank you for your good presentation which I believe potential buyers should definetely see

    We had 8 people on a 2023 5 cabin layout last month out of Kastela. Wider Bimini was much easier to get around but it was shorter. Sunburnt back if you were at the helm too long. Manual winches and non furling main were a LOT of work. Raising the main Became a 2 person job. No rear thruster and yeah, steering in reverse was not very responsive. Its a very beamy boat. Rear stb berth didn't have that ramp and were most roomy I have ever been in. Could sit up in bed even. But no AC and rear berths have HORRIBLE airflow. Bunk bed berth also had no airflow. Was very stuffy air back there. LARGE boat, very spacious, but also sailed much better than expected for the size. We got to 9knts in 22knt wind. Cutting corners on features and options gave a lot of the crew and underwhelming opinion on what could have been a superior boat for a large group.

    So interesting to see just how bad of a "review" yachting world" and "yachting monthly" have made on this boat. They basically sugar coat it, say it is perfect and make a 10 minute walkthrough of the boat. Yachting world, (who has a lot of respect, and for many people is the ultimate journalist agency in the marine industry) have made a review with the designer of the boat literally sitting behind the helm. You can't criticise the boat properly if the designer is onboard. And it's not like the designer Olivio Raccopo added any value to the "review", he just sat there making sure the boat ad is going well. Yachting monthly literally wrote in the title of their review that the boat is "hard to fault". The point I'm trying to make is just how much this channel has grown, and how good the quality of the content actually is. This is a real review: you pointed out the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of this boat. Keep up the good work Nick and I think we could see this channel explode in popularity in a couple years time.

  • @45DegreesSailing

    @45DegreesSailing

    10 ай бұрын

    Thanks Lovro! That is exactly what we are trying to achieve with these reviews. In all honestly, I really enjoyed my time on the Hanse 460 and think it's a great boat. Anyone who watches my channel (and I think you watch more than most! Certainly with a keener eye than many) knows how much we love Hanse. And nothing is perfect. There are always aspects that can be improved upon. I will never make a yacht review ONLY about what is good about a particular model or vessel. I will actually probably be harder on the makes and models I enjoy because I want them to be the best they can be. Because you're absolutely bang on. There are far too many so-called "reviews" out there that are simply ads. They don't go over the boat with a critical eye and call out the good, the bad and the ugly. The transparency is lacking and I think it does a disservice to the industry. The team and I have really enjoyed your support, your comments and your perspective. Keep it rolling. And maybe one day we can get you to feature on the channel!

    Uff, that is a very loaded question for me! It really does depend on the purpose I am heading out with.. Out of the yachts I sail often, and have really good experience on to be able to comment. It would be the Hanse 548. There is a long list of reasons why that I probably need to make a video on! To make a short list.. Size. at 55ft I find her incredibly manoeuvrable and roomy. Great for many circumstances Speed. She is a quick boat given her comfort level, weight and price tag Cabin layout. Brilliant use of space and master cabin still with a 4cabin layout and big bathroom

    How can Hanse produce a vessel with so many flaws? I was considering chartering one last year and we didn't do it because of the self tacking job (we like to have a little work during manoeuvres). Luckily we have opted for an Elan 45.1.

    Can you not winch up the platform with the electric winch?

  • @45DegreesSailing

    @45DegreesSailing

    You can, and it is set up like this on this yacht. It is not a nice/rounded and good system though. And you need to be very careful with the electric winch as it is too powerful for this job.

  • @deedeeyork
    @deedeeyork11 ай бұрын

    Yes the platform is heavy therefore we have an electric one. The charter company who supplied your boat installed a very stupid solution without a pulley. Also you were unnecessary hard on the missing teak on the seats. This was a 2022 model, which means production started in 2021. All manufacturers had supply chain issues due to the pandemic, especially on teak. The info I received is that some manufacturers have decided to stop using real teak and will offer only pvc instead. Regarding the seat in front of the port helm, this is optional. You can leave it out. Next the bathing platform, you can have either a ladder or stairs, it’s up to the customer. The Bimini, same issue. Most charter companies instal this in Croatia and it’s not necessarily supplied by Hanse.

    Thank you for your feedback and these points you have raised. I am aware about the options the charter companies have and their part in it. Curios though.. If supply is short and another option is needed, do you think they should fulfil orders already paid and delivered incorrectly before the new yachts?

    Interesting comment.. as it is not a 'Hanse' design trait across the board, more this particular design. For instance the 548 closed cockpit area is brilliant safety for kids and adults alike in a seaway. I really like it.

    I will never buy another Hanse. Huge QC issues, furniture falling apart frequently, main bulkhead nit glassed in properly causing the mast step to collapse. Refrigeration was installed with no path out for the rejected heat. Terrible sails as standard. These boats are built by factory workers not boatbuilders, and they are managed by people who are focussed on saving money above all else.

    @@45DegreesSailing I had a 430e. It was terrible. Most production boats are to some extent "terrible", or at least compromised by cost cutting and shortcuts, but the Hanse was another level. I wouldn't touch one again.

    @@deerfootnz fair enough. Yes I have been on the 430e. And sailed the 470e's quite a lot. Hanse was doing the aluminium frame at that point is that right? I actually really enjoyed the 470. Sailed fantastic. Certainly a few issues with the design, some with the build. But it actually moved me towards Hanse not away from it. Design and build has changed a lot since then. @@45DegreesSailing no aluminium frame in the 430. The J&V hull design was good, but the sails were appalling. Crosscut Dacron from North's Turkey that were done 5 minutes after they were sheeted on. The boat was so riven with quality issues that it was hard to comprehend. I have alot of experience delivering yachts so I am familiar with most production boat issues, but the Hanse took low quality to a new level. We did something over 10,000 miles at an average of 7 knots so not slow. The best day was 226 miles though with around 45 miles of current assisting. Downwind it was quick-ish but the terrible sails meant that upwind was hopeless.
