There is so much facial expression acting from Mads in season 1 that really speaks to how much he loves Will, I feel like maybe early on Bryan told Mads that they would love each other romantically, but didn't tell Hugh, so we just get subtle face acting that that Will doesn't necessarily pick up on in the earlier season, idk my theory
