its so strange to me when i see a comedian that almost always receives applause instead of actual laughter. edit: to anyone who has come to this video because of the Chapelle stuff, i made this comment 2 years ago and i haven't thought about hannah gadsby in at least a year. the whole trans debate has been going on for 5+ years now. its boring. i dont care.

@@soulseek80nic20I It's about the difference between comedy and a speech. The humor in it is very similar to what you'll see from a college speaker or a Ted talk, keeping their speech entertaining with some light comedy. There's nothing wrong with that, but if their job title is comedian and it's a stand up special, then most fans of comedy will assess comedy before virtue.

Almost 100% of all the people that saw Chappelle's special loved it & all the reviews from the "experts" panned it. BTW I'm in the group that liked Dave's special. He's the #1 comedian in the world, easily right up with the best of George Carlin, Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. I just have to kinda fundamentally disagree with the idea that self-deprecating humor is humiliation, or that it's humility. I feel the reason self deprecation can be used comedically is because of a sort of unsaid agreement between the comedian and the audience. The comedian can point out self-deprecating things in a humorous way that may have kernels of truth, but both the comedian and the audience understand that they are both overexaggerated as well as things that the comedian is above pitying themselves for. Both parties understands that these jokes aren't actually directed at anything that would actually make the comedian a lesser or worse human being. If this isn't the case, and the audience believes that the self-deprecation is not in jest and is in some way causing mental pain to the comedian, then it stops being funny and starts being sad. It would follow from this that if self-deprecating comedy is used by somebody, that person should have a high enough self-esteem to not let the jokes actually get to them, because without the audience having a true understanding of who this person actually is they assume that self-esteem being there. In this case the comedian is only harming themself. All this to say that we shouldn't take issue with the concept of self-deprecating humor, but it's up to the comedian to make up their own mind on whether or not speaking poorly of themselves is personally harmful.

I wish I had this much faith in audiences as you did. I don't agree that this unsaid agreement you mention is implicit and universal, and nowadays, especially not. People consume entertainment, they don't think about it to that extent. It's all just treated as escapism to reinforce your own particular bias, for a significant portion of audiences. That's why people get so extremely defensive at even the mildest critical commentary on it.

she is pretty explicit in interviews that what she means by this is that she won't undermine herself in areas where it would hurt people who are already being punched down on. so she's not going to make fun of her autism or being gay in a way that is palatable for non-autistic or straight audiences. i commend her for that. but yeah, not all self-deprecation is harmful.

If Hannah feels like comedy is not theraputic to her, THAT'S FINE. but for other comics, IT IS. I lived through fifteen years of child abuse. I joke about that with my friends all the time. My friend's mom died while I was in Canada visiting him and we were joking about it that same day. Because for some of us, jokes are a form of acclimation therapy. Confronting a small, fictional version of the trauma as practice for facing the breadth of the real one. If that doesn't work for Hannah OKAY. But maybe the problem is not comedy. Maybe, in fact, it's that she was abused by individual men and uses that to justify fearing all men. That shows she has not healed. Maybe she's not comfortable sharing her experiences as jokes because she hasn't allowed herself to heal from them and she's still seeing her attackers in the eyes of every man she meets. And no, it's not fucking okay because she's a woman. If her attackers were black and she stood on stage saying 'how can any woman not be afraid in a room full of blacks?' then we would RIGHTFULLY have a problem with that. But when it's 50% of the population instead of 13% (sorry I only know the US percentage) it's not only okay, it's coddled. My abuser was a woman. I worked hard to not let that experience turn me against all women, because I knew that kind of cowardice and bigotry was corrosive and kept your wounds open and festering. Hannah is not brave. She's choosing to stay a victim. You know why I tell jokes about my own suffering? Because it helps the wound scab over into a big thick callus. so it doesn't hurt anymore. Hannah won't face the pain of healing, so she blames comedy itself. I feel sorry for her. edit: I wrote 'yes' instead of 'eyes' >.

Self deprecation in a humorous sense will always do more for those who relate to the subject matter, as opposed to telling them "you're a victim". Teaching resilience and strength rather than helplessness and resentment is will always reap better outcomes. Self deprecation is humiliation if you actually believe it. If you're taking aspects of the self to be false, distancing yourself from them, that's transcending the self, seeing through the folly of human ego. It's more than humility, it's recognizing that the way we pull for attention from others, for narcissistic gratification, is ultimately empty and does not work. Tosca Groenewold lol no she made fun of herself because she was raped and it destroyed her esteem and she cooed through comedy now she’s been diluted into complaining onstage to a pandering audience of sympathetic yes men who don’t really care but feel obliged to somehow. Letting 2 men out of billions that raped you ruin your perceptions of men in general is called letting fear win and this special is basically her saying I’m tired of putting forth the effort to cope which after traumatic experiences it takes constant effort to cope but instead she’s folded to her fears denied herself and the audience a true relatable lemonade from lemons night for a complaint listen to my struggles show... we all struggle, we all have trauma. Others didn’t push her into comedy she decided to become a comedian and life is give and take. You want a platform to speak on to get the message out? Well more people will hear the message and call you out because your friends are too afraid of hurting you to actually ask or say what’s on their mind so they just enable your sensitivity until you’re in a group of actualized people who don’t need to adjust to a snowflake and you realize wow I’m not funny my friends are just nice because I’m pathetic. It’s sad really cause everyone has their unique story and these comments online don’t even scrape the surface of anyone’s true views they are simply quick observations

But it was definitely a mix of a tedtalks + a comedy special. The one thing I did find a bit selfish on her end is she had to do this for HER. Not let go of the tension. I mean... that’s nice but I’m here to be entertained, which I feel she did. Most comedians tend to teach you stuff while making you laugh, the one thing she almost argued well is that how come bill burr can be angry and get away with it and I can’t? Well... he does it in a humorous way. She was venting and there was definitely some SJW stuff in there but to say it wasn’t funny or didn’t have any jokes is unfair and an extreme opinion. It’s not like a regular comedy special though, for sure. If people have a problem with that, I’m with you.

Shadow84 Hellsing Most comics these days would use those topics without any kind of background knowledge or experience about it, then proceed to fuck themselves in the ass by rattling tasteless jokes about it. Which can be funny once in a while if you’re a tone deaf fool. If you weren’t listening to the entire show, which I greatly assume you haven’t even seen for god’s sake. She’s telling her story, used her personal experiences to deconstruct the very nature of comedy and stand ups for self deprecation. Her OWN experience. Social Justice Warriors aren't interested in humor. They're interested in "tearing down." They want to ruin comedy so we are all as miserable as they are. Good luck getting these clowns to criticize Islam. Nevermind the fact that the rights and freedoms they enjoy in the west are punishable by imprisonment, beatings, and death in the Islamic world. No no, they need to criticize the "patriarchy" and "white males" as if they had no part in developing in the safest societies on Earth for LGBT folks. These people cry "oppression" constantly but the fact of the matter is these are some of the most privileged people on the planet.
