Skyler absolutely nailed that Hank simply wanted to be the one that nabbed Walt, at all costs. It was embarrassing for him and his reputation for Walt to build a drug empire right under his nose for years. Skyler was an accessory, and while I'm sure he cared about the kids, they were roadblocks, and having them under his care made it easier.

  • @lorderik237

I don't agree that Skyler would've ever helped him. At best she might have remained on better terms with Hank if he'd handled it differently, though even that's questionable in the long term. Skyler would've incriminated herself if she talked, and Hank would've wound up feeling betrayed by her, too, if he knew she was helping Walt to the extent that she did.

But that's the point. He's obsessed with his job, he likes it, he's good at it the same way Walt admitted in the end to Skyler. Hank didn't care much about anything other than "cathing the bad guys". Both Hank and Walt risked their lives, they killed people, ruined other people's lives, etc. They're not much different. The part that turns me off of her a bit is in this scene you can see the moment at which Skyler chooses to not turn on Walter. It's when she learns he's dying and soon will he out of her life. Later in the bathroom she encourages Walter to not turn himself in and to stay quiet so Hank has to try and prove it. In this moment Skyler is being very selfish. It's understandable as self preservation given she got dragged into all of this by fairly justifiable circumstances, but in making this decision she is denying justice to every other person Walter has ever (or will ever, in those last few episodes) bring harm to. She's just not a very moral person at her core, just like Walt (but not as bad.) Her owm and her family's needs come above everything else, even if it means helping Walter get away with it.

This is a great scene! I think one of the things that make BB so good is that each character is intelligent but has flaws and diverse interests. Skylar acted exactly as I would - get legal counsel. Hank shows his dark side here. If he REALLY cared about Skylar, he would ENCOURAGE her to get a lawyer. His own wife is a kleptomaniac, so he should know that everyone has done questionable things, and (good) lawyers keep irrelevant transgressions from being used against their clients. What are the chances that HANK has never done anything unethical (or worse)?

Hank was never the good guy for a single second in the show. I really wonder if some of you were half asleep while watching? Just in the first episode alone, Hank is depicted as the most douche and morally fucked up guy ever.
