I was 17 and bought my first guitar (1956 Fender Tele & Pro Amp) & was learning guitar in 1958 I would play along with Hank Ballard & the Midnighters records for hours - - My band got our first "gig" playing 2 hours Friday & 2 hours Saturday nights - we were "The Vibrants" and played R&R for an hour, and Jelly (J.R.) Sanders Band played country music for an hour at the Pumpkin Center Barn just a few miles west of Bakersfield CA,1959. I would sing the "Annie" songs, Hank Ballard etc. and Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc. . I finally moved to L.A. area & left country music & Bakersfield behind. . until Waylon, Willie, Merle, etc. introduced "Outlaw" country . .

Real mega talent. This is when people could really sing. They didn't need to be pitch corrected by computers like today.

I bought the single of this on Federal Records when I was 12 or so, in 1971, and it seemed like an ancient record then (yet it was only 15 years old or so) and I loved it so much that I started buying all the Hank Ballard singles I could find. It was like finding a seven course meal in a world of snack food.

Hey jim banner this record came out in 1954 and I bought it in 1955 I’m 76 😎

I was just a kid when this came out...what a song...Hank Ballard and his Annie songs were way ahead of their time...just like Little Richard when he sang "Good Golly Miss Molly"

His daughter is my kid's teacher. She's absolutely awesome! I only recently figured out who this guy was...and thus who she is. I'm in awe.... :)

Got my hide tanned for listening to this and its spin off, "Annie had a Baby". I was a little kid and had no idea what all of the fuss was about. Now you know where the term rock and roll came from and what it meant originally.

I had the pleasure of singing with these guys for awhile around 1988. Hank was recording a comeback album and they needed a background singer that could sing high tenor and soprano notes. The two guys on the right in the background recruited me and I recorded a couple songs with them but the album was never released. I'm pretty sure Hank's new wife, who was helping him with his comeback, was killed in an auto accident in New York not too long after that. I'm sure that had something to do with him putting off the return to the spotlight......

I was only 10 when this song played on the juke box at Maddox Park swimming pool...and the teenagers would dance..dirty to this music...I loved it...and all the other songs that followed this one. What a great time to be alive..

I too listened to that juke box, also Moseley Park, Adams Park, Oakland City Park. You must be in Atlanta. I lived there from 1948 to 1956 and have fond memories of those swimming pools as a young person. When you could ride your bike to any of them, and have no fear like todays children live with.

Hank Ballard, had a 2nd group of "Midnighters" after he separated from the original "Midnighters". I knew Hank Ballard and all the members of the second group of "Midnighters" who sang with him longer than the original group. Of that 2nd "Midnighters" group only two members are still alive, Eddie Stovall and Charles Eugene Hudson. They are singing with him in this video left to right, Charles Eugene Hudson, James Dorsey, & Eddie Stovall.

Work with me Annie, Annie had a baby was banned from our local radio station when I was a kid.(in Calif. no less) Had know idea what the song was about at the time..just loved the music and still do. These guys were GREAT..Rock N Roll..nothing like it..

Hank Ballard & Midnighters...my oh my forever!

Used to sing this song with the Holidays at the old Tramend Lounge in Cleveland. Followed it up with "Annie had a Baby" and then I was done for the night. Not a good singer, but the crowd enjoyed it.

The great Buddy Guy was the original lead guitar player for the Midnighters.

This was aired on the David Sanborn Show somewhere between 1988 - 1990, per my husband Charles Eugene Hudson who is singing as a Midnighter on the video.

This band sounds like they did all the music for John Candy's movies

Love it. You never heard it on top-40 radio of course -- "gimme all my meat" -- although a version "Dance With Me Henry," some melody, by some lame white chick, did become popular.

+John Bohr "Dance with me Henry", written by Johnny Otis, Hank Ballard and Etta James, was recorded in'55 as an answer to this song.Etta James is neither a white chick nor lame. Originally called "Roll with me Henry", it was banned on most stations and even after the title was changed it was shunned by some stations.

+David Hobbs Oh but there was a sanitized version by Georgia Gibbs so John Bohr is right. You know that's what they did then. Lame Pat Boone tried to cover most all of Little Richard, for example.
