@@reelgoodfishing I don't know if you ever watched Ward Carroll's channel, but he was an F-14 RIO. In one of his videos, he talked about how the F-14 was a real, two crew airplane, and how it needed both the pilot and RIO to function. He talked about how big a role the RIO played. In an F-14 everything BVR was basically his responsibility. He'd find the targets, prioritize them, and basically set up the strategies and tactics the crew would employ to get the target. Meanwhile, the pilot would take care of flying the airplane and any WVR targets. Granted, Bob was a WSO, but it looked like he had a similar role. Phoenix relied on him a lot, and he never let her down. I love how he was a good, reliable, and faithful teammate. I also like Bob because he reminds me of me when I was younger. I was geeky and socially awkward like him.

Hangman was not the bad guy in this movie. He was hot-headed, but he always followed orders and when Mav picked Rooster over him, he respected his decision. I thinks Maverick knew he was the better pilot, so that’s why he was on stand-by. He didn’t want Rooster to be apart of this mission, but when he proved himself, his hands were tied- so he wanted him to be by his side in case anything happened to him.

The soldiers will want a different commander and the platoon First sergeant will recommend to senior command that he is unfit for command. I am not sure how infantry work. But, we do know that in infantry first sergeants hold higher status compare to junior ranking officers, despite junior ranking officers rank higher. You can't afford to be a "kid" in the infantry just because you are a young hot head that just gradated from college, you are commanding soldiers, you need to be an "adult"

@@jasonfranco6549 to an extent, I agree… Hangman is clearly a combination of Mav and Iceman (flying style of Maverick but cool arrogance of Ice). But I don’t think Rooster actually is hotheaded normally - his ‘hotheadedness’ is quite specific to Maverick (pulling his papers, betraying him, not believing in him etc etc), there’s obviously a lot of emotion (hurt/anger) there. I also think it’s implied that it’s out of character for him (note Phoenix wondering what the hell is going on with him). Here he reacts when Hangman starts to imply that Mav killed his father (which is not Roosters issue - and even though he is angry with Mav, he is still defensive of him). While Hangman wasn’t entirely wrong, he was out of line and clearly just goading Rooster (while actually having no idea of the issue) who is already on edge because of his feelings around Mav.

Hangman almost seemed like he was going to be Iceman’s adversary to Rooster. But he was being brutally honest, with maybe intent on positioning himself to be picked, yet respected the decisions Maverick made. Perhaps he was pushing Rooster to follow the game plan as he felt that he was already going to be the last wingman off the list (having heard from Phoenix he leaves his wingman a lot, was an attribute Maverick didn’t want to see after it made apart of his own identity and friction with Iceman) so the teams had a chance of survival without having to face any of the 5th Gens. I liked how the writers stayed true to his moxie and confidence after saving their life near the end with his dialogue, but ending it with a simple “I’ll see you back on deck,” that quietly acknowledged that they’re still on the same team. In a way, he became Maverick as he had to play reserve role for Iceman/Slider after Hollywood was shot down creating the 1V6 matchup before Maverick/Merlin launched. GOOSEbumps lol.

Actually, Mav had good reasons to choose Rooster. One, he was a team player who'd do whatever it took, including sacrificing himself. Remember how he bailed out Payback and Fanboy? He was the only one who could've nailed Maverick during training; he didn't close the deal, but he was in position to do so. Remember Hangman screaming at him to take the shot? Finally, Rooster was the only one who made it to the target during training; granted, he was a minute late, but he made it. Hence, Maverick had three good reasons to choose Rooster for the mission.

@@markymarknjI think this is absolutely right. Rooster must be technically as good as Hangman (both being Top Gun graduates) but he is more the team player. His issue is confidence, which ironically has been in part contributed to by Maverick (deeper issues related to pulling the papers, Rooster doubts his ability, Maverick’s belief in him etc). Maverick naming him his wingman went a long way to demonstrating that Maverick does think he is good enough. (Though I also think Maverick going on the mission himself possibly also thought he could protect Rooster if he needed to).

But actually the real reason was that the F35 would be so OP that it would make the dogfights so boring and they couldn’t allow that and also the F35 was a single seat aircraft which did not allow for Tom cruise and his actual pilot to do his acting

Sure, definitively. But it doesn't feel forced and done for the sake of agenda. The characters are already established as individuals by that point in the film, so it just happens. Besides, I feel like Hangman was meant as the mirror image of Young Maverick. It's an awesome movie, precisely because you get that everyone there has the skills to be there and not just fill some diversity quota.

People need to stop claiming everything that has more then just straight white men as woke because NEWS FLASH women and other ethnicities do exist in the real world and do exist in all walks of life and jobs. Can fighter pilots wear glasses while flying? As long as you pass the minimum vision standard requirements, you can be a fighter pilot with glasses. With glasses, a potential pilot's vision should be at 20/20. Several stages of the medical exam must be passed to be a fighter pilot.
