    There's something really similar about the hard body stuff shown in this video that reminds me of one of my Yin Bagua teachers (not HJB yin style). He did the same anti-rib grabbing and armpit anti-grab. They talked about integrating that from swimming dragon body sort of practices... It's always so interesting to see these videos of such drastically different styles that have similar to things but yet so different. Also, the dude's hard body was on point the way that he didn't even move while taking those blows. Always love the channel

    What a joy it is to see these new amazing videos appear! Thank you for all the work involved in creating and uploading these. Great to see Hang's system here - which I know a lot of very experienced chow gar'ers have gone on to train in - he is highly respected. You can see how he retains the roots of the power generation - chy sau is a fantastic but very hard, I rarely looked forward to the 30 mins of it at the start of class. Chy sau, doi-jong, sarm bo jin - I recall Sifu Ip Chee Keung then saying that once you have the power, it does not matter what technique you use.

    since you mentioned you're going to cover wing chun one day, can you consider covering and documenting wooden dummy/wooden man/wooden stake forms from various styles? outside wing chun, i heard hung gar and choi li fut has several dummies. there are videos of mantis and bak mei with their own wooden dummy forms. and there's supposed to be dragon, white crane, baji, and bagua wooden dummy forms too? i wonder how many others that are not known

    This look into not just styles/systems in Hong Kong but, looking into the Hakka Systems was extremely informative. I read something some years ago that, before Lau Soui Dai Sifu learned the Chow Ga Tong Long Pai, he was one of the last known exponents of the style known as "Horse Fist" ( Ma Kuen) ??? You would see it in a few of the movies during Kung Fu's Golden Era. Has anyone else heard of this story about Lau Sifu???

    @@MonkeyStealsPeach I know that the Hung Fut Pai teaches 10 Different Animal Sets/Forms and they teach a Horse Form. An exponent of that style named Yim Tai Loi Sifu started teaching the Hung Fut in the States around 1975, settling in the state of Maryland just across the District Of Columbia (DC) line. His school closed it's doors late last year 2022. I believe the Choy Li Fut system also teaches a Horse Form but as a separate stand alone system, I believe it's unfortunately extinct.

    Sijo Lau Shui was already a master in Ma Ga Kuen or Ma Kuen as you said. Supposedly with footwork so quick and agile that his pig tail would not fall down and touch his back until he was done with his form.

    This is only part 1, there's more of what you are looking for in part 2 🙂 In general I think that is sometimes a fair comment though, but I think there is a reason for it. They want to get across the essence if their style, core training methods, what makes it different from another local style, strategy etc. In application things can start to look similar without context of what someone is trying to do.

    I know there's at least a few styles of southern mantis like Chow Gar and Chu Gar, are they all related? Is there any connection with northern mantis? I know the styles are nothing alike but I dunno maybe there's a cultural or some other connection. I heard one theory that they used the name to sort of disguise/hide the school, but maybe it's just all a big coincidence.

  • @MonkeyStealsPeach

  • @EzeHSK

    @EzeHSK

    @@MonkeyStealsPeach Yeah I know they're unrelated but maybe there's a connection. You know Chinese martial arts, especially Guandong styles, have deep political histories. And the Hakka people originally come from the north, so maybe they were like "oh we are with the mantis guys" maybe as a way to hide from whoever chased them south. I dunno, wild hypothesis, maybe bollocks. I mean looking at southern mantis body mechanics you can sort of see the insect's moves. Anyway, thanks for these amazing documentaries.

    For Chow Gar and Chu Gar, AFAIK they are basically the art passed down from the same master, but as the Hakka pronouciation of 'Chow' may sound like a Cantonese 'Chow' or 'Chu', different 'styles' were thus named

  • @Hakka_Charlie

    @Hakka_Charlie

    6 ай бұрын

    The Hakka migrations happened over hundreds of years and they were not "chased" lol they migrated mostly for economical reasons and settled in their new land for generations before moving on. The connection between north and South mantis is that both came to HK in early 20th century, which became a kind of melting pot of northern and southern styles. Some of the northern mantis masters such as master Lee Kam Wing were friends with grandmaster Ip Shiu. You can see many masters turning up at his 90th birthday celebration back in early 2000's.

    In Chow gar mantis, we train the core form called sarm bo gin which contains all the methods within it if you are taught it and understand how. There are separate solo exercises (gungs) that may focus more on a particular body part e.g. the throat, neck area, or ribs etc. followed by many partner drills they work on different things, such as conditioning/hitting, power resistance, sensitivity, reflexes etc.
