Hands On with the Nikon D6 | Nikkor 120-300mm F2.8
The Nikon D6. We’ve finally got our hands around reviewing it. Featuring a new AF system, high-speed continuous shooting, a rugged and weather-resistant body that’s tried and tested, so on and so forth, it’s clearly improving on many fronts. But is it worth your time and money? Hmmmm....
Oh, and we took the 100-300 F/2.8 out for a spin as well, because, why not?

    It’s strange how every “main stream” review channel has only reviewed the D6 on specs and consistently bashing it, but none have actual use the camera in a shooting situation as you did. Thank you for giving it a “REAL WORLD REVIEW” instead just opening the box and sniffing it and saying it’s a disappointment...

    Hey Bobby, Jose from Puerto Rico. Your reviews are a refreshing man! I'm really tired of KZreadrs who already have an opinion even before testing any equipment. You're are pro and give us what you like and dislike by testing. Sure, if you had this kit for 6 months, you'd probably give us a more comprehensive review. Look what happened with the Canon R5 bashing by numerous KZreadrs who are called "experts". It seems that whoever buys an R5 is buying a Super Nova with all this heat criticism. They don't even consider if a person just wants a good stills camera that happens to shoot great but short bursts of video. Man! I'm personally eliminating all these bashers by un-subscribing. It's not even worth giving an opinion. You keep up the excellent work bro!

    Thanks Jose. Yes many channels do this. We don’t as I don’t think it’s fair to the end user and the companies themselves that design and build the products. We need to be fair. Call out what is lacking and highlight the strengths. Yes people forget the R5 also takes fantastic photos and they just concentrate on 8K which most people prob will only use sparingly. The nature of the business I Guess.

    On paper, the specs are a little disappointing compared to what people wanted/expected in a D6 and vs. the newest Canon. I would have liked it if Nikon added better video AF to the D6 (like the did to the D780 and Z cameras). (I have 3 D5's and a D6.)

    Finally a review addressing the unnecessary need for the focusing points all the way to the edge - if you're a decent photographer, your subject should be within those 105 points. Yes, by limiting the focus points the focus data information to be evaluated in a unit of time is greatly increased. Even an entry-level camera would focus pretty quickly if a single focus point was used while using the slower processors of the day. That is another of the misunderstanding when comparing the specs with a general-purpose camera to a specialty camera. A general use camera will have a lot more focus points over a wider span of the focus sensor to suit the needs of a generalist who does not need the speed in evaluating data to track fast erratic motion.For my uses, a general-purpose camera like my D850 and Z6 are much better matches to my subjects but if I had clients who needed money shots in all conditions and lighting of fast-moving subjects I would try to keep the subject in the center and want a very fast AF processor.

    Quick question when you shoot high iso are you using 14bit or 12bit raw? The D6 has about 12 stops of DNR probably 11.9 or 12.0 (it's less than the D5). General rule of thumb, anything below 12ev should be shot in 12bit; anything above 12ev shoot in 14bit.

    As much as this camera has been panned in initial “spec reviews”, what is interesting is that as sports, action and wildlife photographers start using it (its real target) and hands-on reviews come in, people are saying it’s remarkably capable. As a wildlife photographer who is constantly struggling with light, shutter speed, exposure and higher ISOs I’m scratching my head and asking, “might this be the best tool yet for me?”. Love my D500 and D850 but am wondering if this will find its way into my bag? Thanks for a useful and well balanced review. Nicely done.

    Thanks for the kind words. Yes it’s a very capable camera and one that you need to use to appreciate. The spec wars don’t count for real world usage. Yes the video features are lacking. Something Nikon as a whole needs to improve. While this camera is designed for the Sports and wildlife Photographers, people do want to shoot video more and for the price tag it’s a challenge for Nikon to say “buy this camera vs the competition”. However if your work is strictly photography and you already are invested in the Nikon family this is a worthy camera to look at.

    I bought the camera. I'm mainly wildlife. So far I love the camera. I have a D500 and a D850. Both great cameras but the focusing system doesnt even compare to the D6. Thanks for the reasonable video. I agree with you on the focusing points on the camera not going to the edge. The D500 has more edge to edge coverage (DX). When I hit images with moving animals toward the edge, my images generally are trashed because I dont get wing tips. Best to not have them as far as I'm concerned. My hit rate with this camera is off the charts better than the D500 and D850. Wow.... I find myself having to pick my favorite in focus images vs picking the ones in focus. Its a great step up. Is it worth it? It is to me. If I decide to get into video I'll buy a Z6.

    Thanks for the review. I know the photography market is shrinking for camera makers and for photographers (amateurs, pros) making a living out of photography, but I am happy to see photographers who are still enjoying photography like yourself... All the online videos about gears, and criticizing camera makers, cameras for no reason are killing interest in photography, or are making photography boring... The #NikonD6 is for a niche of pros, people should stop criticizing devices they will never use... People need to re-start enjoying photography to help the industry... I enjoy being out with my EOS200D/SL2/KissX9 or my EOS90D and take photographs... Even with my past SX530HS (1/2.3") I used to be out, and enjoy photography. Photographers now vloggers or youtubers, panicking because the maket is shrinking, are actually killing even more the industry with their reviews. Good luck and keep enjoying photography.

    I enjoyed the review, and agree, spec lists have little to do with actual use and resulting images. But the people reviewing it usually have nothing to compare other than specs because few are any are professional photographers, and being gear fans more than image fans, feature lists rule all. This camera is not for me. Not because of its cost or weight but solely because it answers all the questions I am not asking: I do not shoot wildlife professionally, nor sports. My field is portraiture, studio product/fashion, theater/ballet, events, and architecture. But I as an engineer by temperament and education, I can certainly appreciate the applied engineering involved. My cameras used most are a Z6 and D850, and will probably add the Z7s when it is released. For me, the handling and ergonomics trump all, and the Z bodies are a joy to use. The D850 only comes off the shelf when an art director insists on large files. For uses and sensibilities, the only brand that has stayed true to appealing to how cameras are used is Nikon and explains why, from model and class to class, they all share the superior control placement and handling. Build quality is unmatched in the field. Your review seems genuine and reasonable, no-hype from brand sponsorship or affiliate link commissions. I will likely rent a D6 and long glass when they become available just to spend a weekend learning it. For my subjects, the Z6 is suitable for an everyday workhorse camera with the stunning S glass. I have more interest in lenses than bodies, however, and I am waiting for work to pick back up since we have not fully been released from lockdown, which for me started March 14th. But when work picks back up I will be saving for the 58 f/0.95. I rented one for 2 days, it is not cheap to rent, but see why people are going nuts about it after shooting seriously. It will be a limited production lens and probably appreciate in value. Thanks for the very welcome reviews and great production values in the video, you have an easy manner in front of a camera.

    I think that having autofocus reaching the edge has some merit. It’s not for composing for something at the edge (as you said, kind of a ridiculous place to put a subject), but rather for the AF system to not lose a subject it’s tracking as easily if it moves out of the center.

  • @TECH360TV

    And slow down the tracking by having is process all those additional focus points? Then it would be a more general-purpose camera and less suited to getting extremes of performance needed for pro sports and wildlife. Many would prefer a single focal point in the center so speed would be at its peak.

    Still none of the big channels or 90% of the other camera channels still have yet to review the D6 legitimately. Wanted to also leave this little old nugget. For video, regarding slow motion B-roll, using optical flow with speed warp in Davinci easily negates 4K 60p imo. Premiere has a tool too. People always leave out how shooting 60p or 120p and its difficulty to sync audio which can be near impossible in some cases. Now as for RAW output I think Nikon would allow RAW via a Atomos Ninja however if the buyers aren't asking chances are they won't do the same upgrade as the Z6/Z7. I had to think the other day, why all of Nikon cameras stop at 4K 30p? Only the Z7 II shoots 4K 60p natively. The Z6 II will get a upgrade and using the Atomos Ninja on the Z6/Z7 it's possible. I'm wondering like who needs 4K 60p and for what reason? 4K absolutely understandable for cropping/reframing/VFX. But for 60p unless the timeline is 60p I don't see the point of sacrificing footage just for slow motion when software can do slow motion just as clean as 4K 60p with a 4K 30p file, even upresing 1080p is nearly unoticible currently. I mean its not Arri 2k to 4k but it's not 720 to 4k either. As for RAW video, I mean I guess someone needs that while shooting sports or maybe they want it for a different type of job. But for sports I don't see the point of RAW video on this or the 1DxIII. I guess it's a nice to have, it's just much cheaper better cameras than the 1DxIII and D6 that shoot RAW. If someone wants better low iso dynamic range and a lot of features the 1DXIII is the better camera. If someone wants better low light performance and workflow the D6 is the better camera. Otherwise they're pretty much equals at least from what I've seen/read.

  • @stanspb763

    @stanspb763

    4 жыл бұрын

    It is not a problem to fix. It is a choice that sports photographers take. Below 800ISO a D850 is almost 2.5 stops more DR but above that the D6 is clearly better. At 6400 ISO the D850 applies scaling through the rest of its range while the D6 is in native analog DR to 102,000 ISO and does not Apply scaling until over 409,000 ISO. That ability to return printable images to the photo editor in the worst of lighting conditions is something that makes the difference between a successful image and a wasted assignment. A side note, the little Z6 stays in lockstep with the D5/6 right up to 102,000 ISO after which to 204,000 is its limit. Different goals met by different cameras. For its intended audience, each is better suited than the other. I have both a D850 and Z6 and the little Z6 is better at very high ISO or very low light than the D850 but for widest DR, below 80 ISO not much can beat a D850 except MF cameras. Note also that the competition such as Sony a92 resorts to crushing raw noise reduction at 512k and up so its sensor is not up to the performance of a D5 or 6. None of the dedicated sports/action cameras have optimized DR at low ISO

  • @perfectbill1550

    @perfectbill1550

    4 жыл бұрын

    Nope. D5 and D6 have EXACTLY the same DR. And the D5 only has lower DR than other Nikon cameras at LOW ISO. The D850 has 2 1/2 stops better DR as Stan notes - at ISO 100 - but the D5 beats the D850 for DR at ISO above 2,500

    In the case of spec sheet reviewers. The 1DXIII can't shoot beyond 12fps before it starts spewing oil all over the sensor. None of the big reviewers have spoken up about it any of the massive problems with that camera. Freezes and goes to sleep while shooting. Dude you don't have to apologize for others ignorance when the other camera can't even deliver on its own specs. Even the 1000x buffer, no body but a remote shooter is doing that and by doing so it will destroy the camera from all the oil spilling on the sensor.

    As a general purpose camera the Canon has better low ISO DR but less at high ISO so is less of a sports wildlife camera than the Nikon. The Nikon is really optimized for a niche market. The Canon resorts to detail loss at high ISO by turning on nondefeatable RAW noise reduction so there is less recoverable detail. Basically a 1DX3 can compete somewhat with a two camera Nikon shooter(D850 and D5/6) in a single camera unless the going get tough than the D850 is clearly better at low ISO and the D5/6 is clearly better at high ISO. All 3 are good cameras with good support backing them up, which is why at major sporting events, all you will see are Nikons and Canons. Same with photo journalism, like the international photo journalism awards are dominated by those two, but the last few years Nikon cameras produced over 50% of the total award wining photos, 52% in 2018 to 34% shot with Canon and the rest various. Sony took 2% Pentax and Apple had more than Sony. but if you go by the paid KZread gurus, who usually are not professional photographers, one would think there is only one brand, the one that pays the most for promotion to photo channels. Nikon is a pretty old fashion conservative company and does not pay influencers to hype their products.

    Great reply. To add to your last point, this is an area where Nikon needs to improve. Yes I understand the market they are trying to attract but a company needs to earn money to survive. Sony was very good at the marketing aspect especially with KZread channels and influencers. Canon is also doing this much more now which is helping them. Nikon as conservative of a company as they are, need to try a different marketing approach. When I see Nikon I see sports and wildlife. I don’t think Lifestyle. While that works with professionals, for the average user they won’t feel they can use a Nikon without a certain set of skills. Perhaps this can be improved in the upcoming mirrorless cameras

    Last thing last thing. I wonder about Nikon. Lens rentals, etc. type companies buy these lenses. The .95 Noct Z lens, 120-300 like I'm wondering if the high cost has more to do with the lens rental companies and agencies b/c Nikon or any other manufacturer can benefit from some entity who day one is going to buy 5 to 10 lenses if not more. At $13k a pop that's like $130k at pre-order. I know Getty buys camera gear from Canon which is partly why Canon has such a tight grip on sports action photography. They buy over 100 pro bodies and lenses (mostly for robo shooting). That's at least $650k before taxes and that's body only. Getty is probably spending at least $1.5mil to $2mil with Canon. I don't think we're keeping these guys doors open as general consumers it's gotta be these large photo groups/agencies around the world who provide gear to photographers and remote shooters.

    Understand 😊 what I was saying in a joking way was you are paying this much for 2.8 so use it but of course stopping down has its advantages and necessity

    True but what you get is a zoom at 2.8 so instead of carrying two lenses you only need to carry one.

    @@TECH360TV No denying that zooms have there place. I personally own/use/carry the Nikkor 80-200 2.8 ED AIS shooting street and it's big/heavy but a pleasure to use. My point is there isn't a single image in this review that I couldn't have nailed with any of my manual focus Nikkor's. Especially if your using focusing peaking like I have on my Sony A7rii. Look you guys think you need AF .. not going to try to convince you different. I think this Nikkor 120-300 2.8 lens is long over due for Nikon. The fact that it cost 14 grand in Canadian funds so I wont be getting on any time soon. I wish Nikon much success on people buying this lens.

    It’s a specialty lens for sure. Yes one with ample skills can do wonders with manual focus. Not denying that at all. Just showing the potential of the camera and lens

    @@TECH360TV It was good review.. The things is for me .. I never see lens like this reviewed on the street with people walking in front of you and obstuctions making the the AF getting lost. Saying that , Iv said for years that AF sucks , but now with eye focus . I have to admit that it has it's place.

    90% of the folks who bash this camera will never buy it even if it satisfied their 'expectations'. Simply because it's overkill for what they do and they can't afford it anyway. 😂

    Pros are talking about the D6 and the 1dx mkIII. Do You expect amateurs to talk about $5000 cameras that they will never buy? Amateurs talk about mirrorless like Sony a7III or Fuji cameras

    @@monetarnie3841 pro don't talk about much, especially not publicly. It's always the amateurs that talk in a manner of wishful thinking. 90% of camera channels are amateurs reviewing these cameras as a supplemental revenue stream via YT. It was the end of an era. In prior year's price didn't stop anyone from pro bodies. What happened was the technology reached a plateau where even a base model camera is as good and feature dense as a pro body. These last few pro bodies reached their end by remaining big, bulky, heavy, and lacked video controls that lesser cameras offer. The D6 and 1DX III were LOSS LEADERS for marketing.

    If someone wants a more generalist camera the 1Dx3 was designed for that but for the extremes like low light and pro-level connectivity for getting files in front of photo editors as they are shot, the D5/6 is the choice. Like the Sony a92, the 1Dx3 resorts to detail losing RAW noise reduction at high ISO, which can not be turned off. The D6 is far more focused on the needs of a smaller group of professional sports and wildlife shooters. For general photography, Nikon has the D850 which excels in image quality at maximum DR and low ISO. So they are all good, but Nikon concentrates on the needs of specific segments of their user's applications. The difference in connectivity alone gives an edge to Nikon with industry-leading remote file transfer. I use their WT-7 RF module that sends files at 1gigabit per second to a computer or access point up to 660 ft away while shooting so a slide show can be started on large screens of conventions, events and weddings within seconds of the first shot taken. The price for such a limited production specialty item is not going to be the same as a mass-produced item. $6-7k is perfectly reasonable for such an optimized low production unit. Not everyone needs it, a Z6/7 or D850 are much more general cameras at larger volume prices. If you do not see the advantages that is ok, it was not intended for you then.
