With this video you'll learn in less than 12 minutes how to make your own braid for your instrument! For all those who do not plan to make a handpan braid: Enjoy the music I played with my E Asha Handpan 😊🎶
You only have to learn one knot, the rest is a matter of patience! (Did your mum always tell you that you were too impatient? Now you can prove her wrong!)
✂️🧶 WHAT DO YOU NEED?
- 3mm cord in two colors
- scissors
- measuring tape
- OPTIONAL: 2x cord stoppers with 5mm holes (Check it out in the video, I highly recommend these ones!)
📏📐 MEASURES:
- Outer cord: Handpan perimeter + extra length for the end (I took 2 x 2,10 m)
- Inner cord: 10 m coloured cord & 10 m white cord
- For the distance of the outer cords I chose 3,5 - 4 cm (for a RAV you need a little more, because the edge is thicker)
✨The beginning is often a bit confusing, but don't let that discourage you. Tape the ends of the braid to the table or a piece of cardboard to keep it tidy, if you like. Start with normal knots and then keep repeating the macrame knot. Tying the knots becomes quickly automatic! Make sure you keep the pattern of the crossed cords. In my braid, the cord going from right to left was always on top. At the end you finish the braid with ordinary knots and that's it!
💡ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- If you leave more space between the knots, the braid will be less thick, but it will be finished quicker
- The braid has become too short? Push the knots further apart! They are still movable!
- It curls up on one side? The knots are too tight here! Pull them apart.
- This technique also works with small steel tongue drums: But you have to make it much shorter and much wider.
I tied a total of 274 knots in this braid. If you compare it to the fact that you take about 840 breaths per hour, that's not so much! 😉
