HANDMADE FAUX RICE PAPER: A HARD LESSON!

HANDMADE FAUX RICE PAPER...A HARD LESSON!
When making faux rice paper it's A MUST TO USE THE RIGHT GLUE!
I have been watching KZread on how to make faux rice paper as real rice paper is expensive to buy. There were several I liked but when it came to glue most people referred to using any PVA glue mixed with 1/3 water. So that's what I did I used a PVA glue to make paper. When I was done with the test initially all was well. 24 hours later my glue had hardened on the project and started to crack. I tried another glue and another...It wasn't until the 4th or 5th glue that I found success.
So, I thought I'd share my experience and help you find the the best way to make faux rice paper for yourself. Faux rice paper makes a great DIY craft, Junk journal embellishment, makes a cool Junk journal page, or paper craft. It's not only fun to do but makes a wonderful element that provides texture, color, and visual interest to many crafts, cards, or journal pieces.
Have fun experimenting &
Happy crafting!

I put down a flannel backed vinyl tablecloth on a 5 ft table so I can do several sheets at a time. I brush glue on the tablecloth, lay the napkins n brush glue on top. I turn on the ceiling fan n leave it for a couple hours. The sheets peel off perfectly! I just wash off any residue left on the tablecloth n put it away for next time. Elmer’s Glue for the win, too.

That's a great tip Cindy, Thanks! I am so excited to see your comment! Elmer's glue worked for you, humm... I wonder if mine didn't turn out as I used the "strong" Elmer's. When done drying it was hard and cracked to pieces while working with it. Hum, I tested the Elmer's several times with the same result.🤔 I can't figure out the reason others are successful with Elmer's and I can't get it to work?! The Matte Medium worked wonderfully though. Tiff🥰

@@tiffscreativesI had HUGE negative results when using the extra strong Elmers. It was very stiff and cracked whn folded. Faired much better overall with the regular strenth school glue. Much more pliable!

@@lammilee1 Thank you for your comment and sharing your experience! It's very helpful, while researching glues I came across some information regarding PVAC glues and the difference between them. There are elements added to the "strong" glues as well as to the "wood glues" that make them different. All pvac glues are definitely NOT the same. I hope to share this information more in depth in the future. In the meantime, experience from people like yourself is VERY HELPFUL! 😀 KEEP ON CRAFTING! ❤️

Thank you for your comment!😀 Natasha's, was one of the first videos I watched and hers turned out beautifully like you said! That's why I was so surprised when my papers got crispy after 24 hrs or the ones that didn't began to stick together. The only thing I can figure is that the PVA glue in Europe is made differently from the PVA glue here in the US. Possibly different ingredients? 🤔 Do you know of a brand here in the US that is the equivalent or that has worked for you?? I would love to know. Tiff 🙂

Gosh, sorry, I replied to your comment and must have missed hitting enter... Yes, I agree cereal liners are great to use as liners in many craft projects. Unfortunately, we don't have kiddo's at home there for don't go through much cereal. LOL! So I end up using left over plastic bags from the grocery store. Thank you so much for your comment!😃

Could your papers be sticking because of your humidity? Not sure of your location, but that might be a factor. I just used Elmer’s glue all the other day. Only barely thinned and it turned out great. I think your excessive water might have messed up your glue test.

  • @tiffscreatives

    @tiffscreatives

Yes, I tried different batches with multiple levels of water in my glue. I also live in a humid climate which I absolutely believe has an effect! When I use Modpodge I experience a similar problem. The take away; climate has an effect on glues and it's important to test them out first. In the PNW less thinning of glue with water is needed for projects like this. 😀 Thanks for the input!

Thank you for your comment It is nice to see when someone else experiments with things like I do. I have been researching for a video on glues, my oh my, there is a lot of info out there. Getting the right information is the trick, then testing it out. I hope to be editing it soon for this video has taken more work than anticipated!

Hello Debbie, Mod Podge and Elmer's glue were used. The "strong" Elmer's must have something else in it...🤔Same with Mod Podge ... So, we are down to considering the amount of water... I would use less and make it rho

1/3 water, and with the glue I have done mostly Elmer's (or just plain pva) some mod podge. I kinda like the combo

Hi Debbie, I have done quite a few tests to triple check results. I will look at doing another test measuring the water carefully and using "plain" Elmer's glue. 😀 That's where all of this can get tricky with sooo many glues on the market. Question❓🤔- What do you consider "Plain PVA" glue here in the States. There is literally nothing I know of that is labeled as such. Thank you for your dialogue around this topic as it's very helpful. ❤️ PS - I have followers from many countries that's why I use the term "in the States '.

Stop with the animations. Also, pay attention to the videos where the process works then follow the process. If you know what works, you don't really need to know what doesn't. Keep things simple. I could not finish this video because it was filled with unnecessary information and silly animations.
