The part that sings the high part of the duet in this opera work is Berenice - Soprano. This is not a castrato role. It is natural to show off costumes that reveal one's personality even at concerts other than opera, and there is no problem at all. On the other hand, publicly evaluating someone negatively based on a personal point of view may be punishable by law. This debate will be deleted as it is considered an act of insulting the majority of audiences who recognize such free art and suppressing the freedom of art.

The beauty of this aria is sublime, like everything Handel composed. Crossdressing was very common during the Baroque era, the singers were characterized according to the occasion :)

Sorry, but I find your Comment sheer, blithe pretentiousness. I contend in the first instance that a minimal fact has been gleaned from Lucy Worsley - or Horrible Histories - and reproduced to convey a degree of expertise not in fact, possessed. I further suggest that your shameless regurgitation of something that ANYONE watching something so esoteric as a performance of Baroque music featuring a bloke in a sparkly frock, will already know. Moreover, beyond the naked attempt to cash a cheque you lack funds to honour, it is just an annoying, mewling, jammy little oh-so-pleased-with-yourself attempt to virtue signal how cool you are with this bizarre and distracting spectacle. You, of course, are free to enjoy it however you like. But the fact that you chose to grace us all with the written equivalent of the loo-roll cover, tastefully macramé'd in the form of an Andalusian flamenco dancer, speaks little, to me at least, of the remotest desire to share genuine enjoyment of the performance - and far more of a need to present as metropolitan and sophisticated, yet also feel casually normalised and unremarkable. In common parlance I think that's best encapsulated by "fake it til you make it". Problem is, in case you're wondering what you've done to deserve this, I'm so fucking bored with that - and this was the most transparent example I think I've yet seen. I also sense (with an unmissable eyeroll) a vacuous and insubstantial persona and even more so, am simply moved to say with ennui - "so what?" Because, for the love of all that's holy (very little, then) don't bore everyone with the tedious - and inaccurate - trope of "oh well you know, cross dressing and drag have been around for centuries. That's a lazy attempt to conflate modern gender politics - with a feature of historical performance, which has got absolutely nothing to do with some fragrant young artiste mooning about the stage, in a strappy little number, moué -ing at the audience while wearing too much lipgloss and making come-to-bed eyes at the other fella who, ironically, is probably a bottom. It's a porn movie I wouldn't bother with never mind a threesome I"d most definitely decline. Don't kid yourself that this is in any way a descendent of the Restoration"s seeming fetish with drag which, if there were any queer undertones, were appreciated by only a tiny circle of intimates. Asides from a totally practical necessity born out of a time both when it was illegal for a woman to appear on stage (and yes, that would be a woman with a vagina - and not one with meat 'n two furry low hanging veg) - and when there were often more parts in the play or opera than there were performers in the company or troupe - asides from all that, the rather grotesque, bawdy, one dimensional and frankly dull impression intended by subverting the genders, is simply one centered on sex - or some variation thereof ie something like a Kenneth Williams-esque Carry On Camping style archness. All that has its place but a) it's been done to friggin death already and b) neither distracts from nor replaces the comparative lack of talent.

"Crossdressing was very common during the Baroque era" yeah .. in theater, during the theatrical performance which is a specific genre different from this one. I won't even comment on necessarily having to push this modus operandi to excess (thanks Cecilia Bartoli, we will remember you more for your grimaces than for your voice). The crossdressing of the Baroque time cannot and must not become a justification for being able to show up at any event (as if they were all the same and who cares about decorum, respect, precise and well-codified etiquette) perhaps naked with a cactus between your ears. It seems almost anachronistic that at the time there were few well-coded places and moments in which you could dress as you wanted (Carnival for those who were from the people, specific THEATRICAL performances for those who lived the life of an artist) while now you can dress in any way (recently in Germany, I don't know where the hell it was, a group of people accustomed to BDSM dressed up as dogs and started barking in the station to protest to obtain rights - I have yet to understand which ones they don't have). What is the point of showing off certain aspects (to be able to say that one is morally on the right side while others are "unfaithful"?) such as a male who paints his nails, who wears heels and shiny cloaks, if this then doesn't it make any sense since you can now do it every day and in everyday life? For me the opposite makes sense, given that there is all this freedom in everyday life, one could think of doing a nice revolutionary act and pursuing that decorum whereby despite one identifying with what one wants, one actually shows those traits that are considered standard, common, inconspicuous and not capable of exceeding those "bad and ugly" standards.

Esto me hace imaginar aquellas cortes europeas que escuchaban música de cámara interpretadas por los castrati. En realidad es una fortuna la que tenemos: escuchar música de aquella época pero con Samuel Mariño y Hugh Cutting que están completicos y con los pantalones bien puestos..! El mundo no se perderá la oportunidad de escuchar voces tan privilegiadas. ¡Muchos éxitos!

What is remarkable to me is the completely female timbre of Samuel Mariño; his is not a countertenor-sounding voice, but a real soprano. I agree with the comments on the beauty of the duet and the exquisite blend of voices. I miss the chemistry between characters, which seems to be tinged by a bit of discomfort.

See your point. But probably seeing the two together perform instead of just listening makes you come to that conclusion. The voices together are beautiful, I think. The lack a bit of performance/stage chemistry. The voices make up for that imo.

Sé que voy contracorriente, pero me gustaría aplaudir a Hugh Cutting. Canta realmente bien, expresa y su técnica de canto es ejemplar. El contraenor en registro de mezzo o contralto siempre tiene un punto de belleza y seducción timbrística que las tesituras de soprano no es habitual.

Just for the record, Mr. Mariño has a Soprano register ,he's not a contratenor.His beautiful voice it's much more wide if you listen his interpretation of the italian baroque composers yoy will enjoy the most beautiful voice extravaganza.The race doesn't be an obstacle when the people have real talent.

@@miltongajardo9800 There are two possibilities. The term soprano historically is only for female Voice and the contratenor for male. The contratenors are able to reach the contralto's, mezzosoprano' and soprano's ranges. In the others words, sopranist contratenor is similar to soprano. The Second possibility is, in your case, to call both soprano voices. It's acceptable. Look at Lionel Stoffel singing 'Vissi d'art' he does whistle voice.
