Hand Speed Exercise - Practical Singles
Being able to play a single stroke roll is important, but nowhere near as important as being able to smoothly transition from a groove into quick, flawless singles. This exercise "Practical Singles" will help you do exactly that!

Another great lesson with a very useful exercise. The real bonus is Juno, but sometime she needs her own video. She's adorable !!!

I read your comment as I was starting to watch the program. After reading about 'Juno' I was expecting some tasty bird walking on,before seeing that Juno is a dog lol ! Nice dog though,I wonder if he named it after the beach which our Canadian brothers landed on next us on D-day.

@@BlackLotusC108 to be honest, I totally forgot about this video, so haven't really implemented the lessons yet. But thank you for putting it back on my radar! Now that I have lots of free time, I can sit and practice :)
Respect was somehow raised even higher after the quip about his own tattoo
Mike mocked his own tattoo. Respect, Mike. That's character.
This guy makes me practice...Mike your channel is one of the best things on KZread. Thank you for making all of us better!
Michael, you ALWAYS make me wanna practice (EVEN WHEN I DO’NT WANT TO)! Fantastic as always man!!!!
Just loved the way you explain everything with that humble attitude... So that it makes it look quite attainable. Loved it.
Perfect. I was just sitting here thinking I should be less lazy this Saturday afternoon. Mike shows up to spur me to action. It’s a dog-day afternoon. I love my Reflexx pad, which I bought months ago after seeing you play it, but it’s already gathering too much dust. Time to go clean up my pad and my playing. Thanks, Mike!
Excellent single stroke speed building exercise Mike. I love simple and effective. I have a student who has really been complaining about his left hand being dysfunctional. Tuesday I will introduce him to this lesson. Thank you for sharing.
Mike was one of the first drumming KZreadrs I found but some of his teachings and licks have taught me so much and will stick with me till I die!!!
A great lesson as usual. Importantly, this exercise exposes defects in holding the sticks as one switches gradually from wrist to necessary finger action to achieve speed. In my view this should have been one of my first exercises as I started to learn the drums. Never stop teaching, you are an inspiration. Regards, Peter (U.K.)
Thank you for all the drum lessons! They really help me a lot ❤️
Best lessons on KZread. Love your work. Also your dog.
I just started learning and love this exercise! Thank you!
Really like mirroring this exercise with the feet! I've been working on double kick since quarantine started and this is really helpful for left foot-lead singles
Thank you Every time and watch you I learned something new
I get it now. Thanks alot Mike. Im a big fans of yours right now! I love your sounds.
That was great! Thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial! Thankyou!
Nice exercise, will for sure include this is my routine, thanks
This is the best excersis on KZread!
Hey Mike, This was an awesome exercise. As a jazz drummer, I expanded it to eighth & sixteenth note triplets with brushes. Love it!
This is the first video I’ve seen by you, and you answered every single thought as they came up. I wasn’t breathing, I was beating my pad, leading with the left - gosh. Subbbbbbed
Thanks Mike for being such a dynamic Educator, even when u dont see us I'm pretty sure some people agree, nod, or even say heck yeah to your lessons 👌🥁
Love your lessons, so good
Luv it! Thanks Mike. Happy drumming 😃
Thanks for the excellent lesson!! 👏👏
Great excercise, Mike! Cheers 😘🔥
Great advice, thanks for sharing. Enjoyed seeing Juno too!!!

Was looking for a good single stroke video and the best one popped up when I needed it most lmaoo. Thanks!!!
Dude... like wow!!! I mean, just wow!! Like wow!! What a Friggin breakthrough experience this little lesson has done for me. I feel like I just took DMT ... my singles are so much more controlled and speeding up every SINGLE day!!! Thank youuuuuu 🙏🏼
Amazing content! Very helpful and entertaining to watch
Great lesson will be using this for improving my single stoke rolls. Thanks Mike. God Bless.
Great video!
I just found this channel. I've been playing guitar all my life, but this past Saturday I bought my first drum set.. it's a "KAT" electronic set and I love it. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to make these videos to help others who want to learn. You rock bro. I subbed.
This lesson made me subscribe! So thanks 🙏🏼
awesome! thank you! i can't wait to start using this. i'm starting drum lessons soon
Great hack for building speed, THANKS!
Totally awesome exercise.
Wow what a legend he is,I love that exercise time for me to practice this and speed it up later thank u so much blessing!!!
You’re a lot of fun to watch and I love your dog’s cameo.
Loved the intro about the practice pads
Thanks mike😍awesome lesson.
Thanks Mike. I love this exercise. I have struggled for years and years. Embarrassingly decades , with my weak left hand. I finally couldn't take the weakness and started playing when I can, left handed. Switching up etc. But it's met with a ton of mistakes and it's not really helping me get better very quick. 2 nights doing this for 30 minutes and I feel like my arm is starting to get it. Very seldom do I find a routine that works wonders , this is one. Thanks. Oh, yeah, I'm that rock drummer beating my practice pad like it owes me money lol. 15 minutes of that, 15 dynamically .
Thanks for sharing us such a very helpful exercise
was compelled to hit the like button right after junno showed up. great tutorial. thank you
Thank you!
Why does this feel like a therapy? I'm gonna buy a practice pad now :D such an inspiration. Thanks!
Thanks for this bro!
Super exercice pour équilibrer la frappe des deux mains , et quelle magnifique batterie Gretsch !
The fact that you owned it (tattoo), makes it cooler than the rest. Thank you for the great info, and Im followin now!

So simple, but so NOT EASY when you swap to those left hand lead singles at 200bpm, LOL
Perfect video.
What an awesome intro, love the talk abt pads
I just bought the Thomas Lang Practice Pad just to try something new after practicing on the Real Feel Pad over years. I also bought a pair of Military Sticks to strengthen my muscles. These two things pushed my motivation to practice into another dimension! It‘s so much fun and so effective at the same time. Great combination which works for me perfectly!
The best I love U Mike You should show us how you play blast beats, you have a great technique respect!
Literally me everytime- "By now you have switched your right hand to lead singles in your mind and you don't know it yet"
Went from beginner to SUPER BEGINNER. Couldn’t keep up at the end, but one day I will 😈 Great video BTW😉
Top video. After weeks of practicing chop builder, paradiddle diddle etc, it'll soon be time to pay for another months subscription.
need mor buttercups just love mike always brings some fun, when stuck while drumming
…;love the lesson…I get all excited about different pads. Love the loose bounce with back fingers. Oh that Blue sparkle Gretsch!
Been doing this exercise for about 2 years now and my god what a game changer thank you so much!! Still working on my left with that being said lol probably won't ever be perfect but that's ok 😂
That Part with the Dog is Just the best Stuff ever. This is a Like before I even got to the practice Part. 10/10.
This is truly cool!
I love your dog !! So funny. That’ is the bonus of your lessons lol love all your lessons.
It's really helpful 🥰
Thank you 😊
I love, love, love this one! I call it "changing gears". I transcribed it for whatever reason (I think I can memba it). I do my feet with it at the same time. Usually with the Stick Control book. I also really like the one with the different rudiments, bass drum in between, left foot hi hat pulse. Ya can never perfect them, right? Ur the best bro!
Another great exercise Mike thank you! this is just what I needed. really need to work on this left side, I can get the right up to 200 but the left is not quite there yet I will push on tho looking forward to listening to the pod cast at some point this week as well eddys put it up in the discord group but with work not had a chance yet! Hope your well
You’re the man!!!!!!!!

Awesome to hear my friend. Really listen for absolute clarity on this one!
Inspired!
I just bought my first drum practice pad and the intro was perfect. Any recommendations on how and what to practice on practice pad? Thanks!
….gosh what a perfect symmetrical relaxed finger and bounce technique! I do continuous singles slow….then build only to a speed I can do still relaxed and keep that goin’ ….yes not easy…..start slow to master it……excellent video…
Watched the video yesterday Mike. I started at 100bpm and went up in increments of 5 until I reached my top speed at which I could sustain it for 1 min. For me, my top speed was 165, for I could not sustain 170 for a minute. So, today I started at 160 and practiced the exercise for 5 min. I will continue for 30 days, bumping up my speed by one or two points at a time until I am up to the target of 200bpm. Thank you Mike as I am looking forward to seeing how much improvement I can see over the next 30 days. I will repost my progress then. :-)

Top Mike 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
im very impressed. not by you, but by Juno, of course
works great for paradiddles as well: sub every 4 notes for a paradiddle or paradiddle inversion (or any 4 note phrase that has you alternating lead with each grouping). although maybe an enlengthened 16th (fast) note phrase should be concatenated to exercise endurance
I'm on it!!!!
I've been playing for over fifty years and found this useful. Thanks!
i made my practice pad with kitchen wooden board and glued old mouse pad on top of it so it wont make loud noise. i was thinking gluing piece of shoe sole on it but i am very happy with this one.
