After watching many vids on how to re stich my black leather seat I tried black plastic zap straps. I used about half of the bag that cost me 99 cents. It not as good as shown here but its pretty darn good and inexpensive. Very easy too. You may know then as zip straps.

Why not use the double hidden stitch? Its a cleaner looking repair. Nylon thread is better than cotton because it does not fray like cotton does. Use a regulator to make the hole bigger for threading. I used all of the things mentioned above with great results. I used to repair leather for a living.

I use two needles and loop the threads in the middle like a regular machine stitch would. Makes a nicer looking seam. But this is a decent fix as well.

Pardon me, but I'm confused. I understand the basics of what you're saying regarding top stitching, but it's unclear to me if you're sewing the zipper cloth to the underside of the leather or not. Is sewing the zipper back to the underside of your leather there your goal? I ask because it looks like the zipper's fabric wasn't sewn through, but perhaps I visually missed something. I have "naugahyde" seat cushion on a recliner that I need to sew the top front of the cushion to the front part that wraps around the entire cushion. I figured that I'd just take the foam out of the seat cushion if necessary, but for now I wanted to find a curved needle with some matching colored nylon thread and see if that would work without fiddling with the foam cushion inside. If you have any thoughts on this, I'd welcome it as I'm far from an accomplished sewer.

This is the best video I have ever seen on You Tube that shows how to duplicate existing stitches. Thank you for the information.. I have some questions. We have had no car to drive for 3 years and someone recently donated us a 97 Chevy Suburban with leather and cloth seats. The drivers seat has several holes in it, including one massive hole on the bottom part of the seat where towards the door. After a ton of research looking for a replacement seat cover, I discovered that this was custom work by a company long out of business. The hole gets much worse each time I use the truck and the foam in the hole is crumbling away. A repair shop wanted $450 to replace the leather, but I believe I can do it myself. Do you have a video that show how to replace a section of a seat cover. I had planned on removing the seat, and then the cover from the seat. I was then going to remove the stitches holding on the damaged leather, and use the old leather piece as a pattern make a new piece of leather with stitch holes in the same locations. I am very patient and can follow instructions very well. Do you have a video showing how to do this? Also, where should I go to get matching leather? Thank you. God bless. James

This is a basic ladder stitch, and is a very poor repair. This is not a correct way to sew leather.
