Hand Pollinating Annonas with Har

Hand pollinating annonas like sugar apples, cherimoya and atemoya can produce larger and prettier fruits. In this video, our resident annona expert Har Mahdeem shows how to hand pollinate annona flowers. All you need is a paintbrush and a small container!

Nice video. I wish you could get a better zoom lens to see what he was doing on the tree. Once he removed the flower to see I could no longer see the shape of the flower. It’s more confusing off the tree

Thank you for such a comprehensive tutorial. There are so many bad examples of pollinating out there that it took me several days to find this video. The flowers on this family, anona, are so weird that I've never seen fruit from all the cherimoya trees growing in our neighborhood. So I'd venture to guess that hand pollination is necessary in our very urban setting as our local pollinators (I don't think) are doing the job.

My cherimoya tree is not producing flowers this year. In previous years, July and August were when I would hand pollinate the flowers to get fruit in November. This 25-year-old tree has been doing well and appears healthy with beautiful leaves. But this summer, as of July 25th, I have not seen any flowers on the tree to pollinate. What could have happened to cause it not to flower this year?

Nitidulid beetles. Wow! .All this time I though it was bees that did the pollunation. I have seen them in my garage ( dead) because we need more turf (smh). I do hand pollinate but this year very little success.

I have in my back yard a single flowering Paw Paw, a Susquehanna and, like all paw paws, an annona relative, Asimina Triloba. My Susquehanna paw paw tree back there amongst the cherimoyas and atemoyays, which I call annona-land, produced three flowers for the first time this spring, but none of my other ten paw paws were flowering at all. So I took pollen from an El Bumpo cherimoya in desperation and spread it over the stigmas of my big, wine colored paw paw flowers that began to look very mature. ONE paw paw flower held and began to produce a single "finger" as I call it. Man, am I babying that single Susquehanna fruit, which is about an inch long right now. Anyone out there ever hear otherwise than one can successfully make such a bizarre trans generic cross pollination. It seems so bizarre to me. I live in zone 10, southern california.

I just tried it and unfortunately I used the plastic paint brush so I guess I won't be getting any. Here in Phoenix, there isn't any "Netidolid" beetles so their is no orchards of sugar apples.

One clarification. is it enough that even one pollen is sufficient to fertilize it. if more numbers of pollen is poured , will the no of seed formation is more .is there any relation between number of pollen vs seed formation or size.?

@Tropical Bay Area Okey Thank you for that, I was really confused, At home I have many sugar apple trees and one Geffner Atemoya tree. Both of them were flowering and I tried to pollinate Atemoya, because not enought male flower ,so I was taking male pollen from sugar apple and mannualy pollinating to Atemoya female flowers, So it will develop right? my question is, the fruit will be the same? Atemoya fruit? or it will be different? thanks for the response
