I got off the road 12 years ago and started driving for a lumber company delivering lumber to new housing projects. Considering the places I go, having a cb radio is literally pointless. But recently with the housing market crashing down to all but a stop, my boss decided to have me deliver loads Monday for the department that goes out further. The place they have me going is Garland, and I'll be coming from Cresson (SW of Ft Worth). I do NOT want to drive in Dallas without a cb, so I wanted to get a handheld. This way when I get back to my own department, I can just store the cb and not have to leave it in the company truck. Your review of this really helped out, and I think it will do for me what I want it to do.

I hope after three years you have found the Midland 75-822 handheld is the way to go. It has a dual pigtail connection with a cigarette lighter plug and PL256 adapter for connecting to an external antenna. Operates very easily, just get a good mag mount antenna like the, Wilson 1000, K40, or Tram 3500 to get max range. So far I have been using a K30 antenna for a number of year's and can get across town with no problem.

In my car I have a Uniden PRO401HH hand held with the same BNC to PL-259 connectors you have, and the Wilson Little Wil antenna. I had a cheap Scoshe magnet mount antenna but the SWR's were so high I could only listen or else I'd risk burning out my radio. I just made a 4700 mile road trip across the US and back but I didn't get much range from the cheap antenna. I just got the Wilson antenna today and I heard people talking 8-10 miles up the highway from where I was. The CB came in handy on my road trip, we got directions to bypass an accident that had traffic at a stand still and also the trucks called out a few police that were not visible until you passed them. Even Waze didn't have those cops marked. I wish I would have had this better Wilson antenna on my trip. In my truck I have a PRO505XL and a firestik mounted to the front fender with a hood channel mount. The only problem with these hand helds is they are weak. Mine is .5 watt on low and 1 watt on high. Not much range to get out. I plan to put a small Radioddity CB-27 in my car since it has more power than these hand held radios do. These are good in a pinch or if you are in a rental, or let a buddy borrow it when he is driving near you so you can keep in contact.

Man, very educational! I am a full-time RVer and got caught on a two lane highway where a horse trailer pulled by a pick-up jack knifed in the mountains. Both rigs were pinned between rocks on both sides of the highway. They had to get another horse trailer up there, offload the horses, before they could even start working on removing the vehicles. 3 hours later!!! traffic was finally moving again. Turns out the driver had a medical emergency so they had to deal with that as well. THAT was the day I decided to get a handheld CB because for 3 hours I knew nothing. Fortunately I was hanging out in the RV waiting to hear traffic move again. So now I have a handheld CB and can't wait to use it. I'm watching videos to learn all I can. So question, you pulled off the stubby antenna and put a coaxial cable on the antenna mount -where does that cable go to? (An antenna on the roof of your truck? If so, I would have liked to see that.

@@CFarmer Also cool is the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP I drive now has a 40ch SSB rig I custom installed in the dash (hidden underneath the ashtray in the back, only the faceplate shows) with a custom made antenna mount over the right tailpipe (1/4" x 1.25" aluminum) with QDs so I can switch antennas. It's strong enough to hold a 9' SS whip at highway speeds (but I only use the 9' for fixed coms). 2005 Grand Prix GT2 uses the Midland rig in your vid with a mag mount ant. Got the ext speak/mic for it too! Love the radio BTW! AND learned a few things about it watching your vid! I had a Rat Shack unit for years that looks nearly identical (probably rebranded Midland rig) it finally died and I got the new one. Also I have a 40 ch SSB base at home with a 1/4 wave ground plane. And either a D-104 or Turner Super Sidekick depending on the mood I'm in at the time! ;)

Great review. I am trying to decide if I want to go with this setup or a cobra 18wxst ii. I was originally leaning towards that radio but now that I found this one with the antenna. I might go with this one since it’s portable.i just want it in my pickup truck. Not a semi.

BNC to SO-239 adapter. Those rubber duck antennas are great for surviving getting whacked on things but are just about the worst possible antennas. Getting the antenna outside the vehicle will be a big improvement even if you use the included rubber duck with a mag mount. A normal size CB antenna will give even better performance.

I ran a uniden pro401hh hand held to a mag mount wilson 1000 for a little bit. Actually did really good for a $50 hand held. Glad it came with a 12v car plug. It will go through batteries if you talk a lot. If you don’t want to mount a radio or antenna this is a great option. That new hand held president has that comes with a rechargeable battery and basically everything you need to hook it up to you car is a great option also. What matters the most is the antenna. The Wilson little will does good for its size. But since you’re going with a magnet mount and it’s not going to be there permanently you might as well go for the mag mount Wilson 1000. I’ve had both the little will and currently have the 1000. There is a pretty big difference between the two. The receive is a lot better and gets out a little further also.

The rubber ducky antenna is basically a dummy load and is the worst possible antenna to use. A good mag mount antenna (lil Will for example) would be the best. And yes, you should still check your match, even with a walkie talkie! The average real world output of most CB walkies is around 1/2 watt on low and 2 to 3 watts on high. All that said, this is a really good video!

Hi, saw your video as I needed something smaller in my crowded half-ton Frontier pick up. I was concerned about your comment that even the Wilson antenna gave you only a mile or two transmitting distance. Technically that shouldn't be the case as the specs say it's a full 4 watts which is the maximum legal power for any CB radio. I still went ahead to purchase it through the Cobra site for only $89 as you said. I think you may need to check the SWR and adjust your Wilson to match the Cobra better. I fully expect this to perform as well as a full-size CB with my K40 magnet mount antenna after I adjust the SWR. Transmission propagation can be tricky. If your in a hilly or mountainous area expect little results. Even the type of vehicle makes a big difference. My bigger pickup truck has more metal under the antenna so my understanding is that the ground plane is better as opposed to a small subcompact car.
