Hand Forging a Gate!

This is a gate I made using traditional blacksmithing methods. The metal i'm using is wrought iron from wagon wheel bands. The wheel bands are possibly 100 years old, and since this is probably the last ever gate made this way, I felt like it should be documented in some way. This is 6 weeks work in 14 minutes. Thank you.

cool stuff, and great to see a smith working with wrought iron. I love using wrought, its what I learnt on and always have an eye open for it at the scrap yard and out in the hedges etc . The trip hammer is cracking People just don't have the money to pay for wrought anymore , its such a rarity and with how " Moody" it is to work most smiths dont want to use it either. When I learnt it was still a thing that your gate showed off how well to do you were. thanks for sharing the process...its awesome work

I'll admit I am jealous that you have wrought iron I am having a hard time sourcing it. Very nice craftsmanship and thank you for giving that old iron a new life that is why I love blacksmithing.

Excellent decoration on your pieces, James; you're much better than I at hot-working in the decor. One comment: the text of the superimposed titles is a bit small when viewed on a computer screen; you might consider a larger font for visibility's sake. Great work, though!

Did you build your power hammer? Is there a video tutorial on your power hammer? It looks great, it looks simple but efficient. Keep on keepin on.

My power hammer is a Blacker Type B. It was built in 1948. The original patent was made in the USA until 1947, then a company in the UK acquired the patent and began production there. It has a solid cast casing, and the head weighs 27kg (60lbs) The head traverses left and right for different operations. It's a great hammer!

@@oconnorblacksmith thanks for your reply. I’m wanting to get into Smithing but the only experience I have is heritage and education on KZread from great Smiths like yourself and Black Bear Forge channel plus a few others. You do some great, educational and interesting work. Thanks for sharing.

Do you know anything about the history of your anvil? Maker, how old, etc.? Thanks
