Andy, I'm wondering if you can advise me. I want to start carving spoons. Thing is, I don't have an axe. And although I'm a South African Pensioner the purchase of an axe is certainly not beyond my means. But I want the RIGHT axe. And there are so many videos with everybody using a different axe you get downright confused. I'm a relatively short female and I'm 68 with a relatively small hand. I don't want a John Bunyan axe... So. I went into our local second-hand/junk/thrift store today and asked Bill if he had any axes. He said no, but he'd keep an eye out. Then he said 'Hold on, try this.' And taking a CLEAVER off a shelf behind the counter he handed it to me. And I ALMOST FAINTED. It was an OCHENSKOPF and it was vintage - made I suspect before the days of Gedore. It's 30cm long with a 16cm long blade that is 8cm deep. The tang is 3/4 and it's held in a beautiful - yellowwood? - handle by three polished brass rivets. It weighs 600gm. This thing is BEAUTIFUL. It has weight and balance in equal proportion. It delights both the eye and the sense of tradition. Bill wanted R50 for it. Bill got his R50... Anyway, checking online to get a realistic idea of its value I only found one other listing - an IDENTICAL Ochenskopf but a bit bigger, and the buyer wanted FIFTEEN HUNDRED Rand for it. He got it too because when I saw the listing it was sold. So, here's my question - will this cleaver do for blocking out a spoon?

Hey there, what a tale! So the defining factor of a good carving tool is the edge thickness and grind. If it's too thin, you will constantly get it stuck, too thick and you will be working too hard. Check out my video on regrinding a budget axe and see if that helps your decision!
