Hand Carving a Demon Dog from a Block of Wood

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I carved a demon dog called a Black Shuck from tulip wood over the course of 3 months with around 90 hours work in total. I decided to go the hybrid wood carving route with this one, using a carving disc, a mini chainsaw and of course my chisels and knives.
Why did I pick the Black Shuck? Well, it's a demon dog from East Anglian folklore, the area in which I live in the UK. I'm hoping to promote and educate people about non-mainstream myths, legends and beasts because I feel like these little snippets of the past are so important to us culturally and the more attention I can bring to them, the better.
I of course also want to share my culture with the world, and explore as many other cultures around the world as possible.
This carving was made from a block of tulip wood and finished with a blow torch and diluted oil paints over a wood varnish.

The chisel funeral was very moving. I mean, I've heard of burying the hatchet but no one ever thinks of doing that with a chisel.

Well it was a heartbreaking moment, I figured a funeral was an appropriate response haha. Thanks for watching mate, appreciate it!

I recognised the 'mistiness' as soon as you showed us - I've had the same dreadful clash of chemistry myself. And the water/oil-based thing is just the start - Kath and I made a scientific demonstration model a lot of years ago and finished it with an oil-based paint only to notice a tiny scratch a few hours before we were due to deliver it. "No problem, I'll just blend it in with a dusting from this nice aerosol paint, which is precisely the same colour." Cellulose and oil don't mix either. What a day that was... Anyway. Loved the mysterious music over the closing section. Fantastic result Clint, and another hugely enjoyable video. Thanks for all your efforts, and keep us posted on what finally happens to this magnificent piece of work.

Oh blimey that sounds like it was a stressful moment, especially since you were in the process of delivering it. Thanks mate! I appreciate your support as always. If this does head out of the shed I'll be sure to keep you guys informed.

An amazing sculpture Clint . I very much enjoyed the video mate .I vaguely remember my mother who was born in Aspenden near Buntingford, telling me stories of a black dog that terrorised the country side (her ancestors came from Clavering and those tales may have originated from them to her ) As you may quess, I love the folk lore of England and would love to see more folk based carvings.Loved the burial of the broken chisel ...may it rust in peace✝Cheers mate and once again thank you for the amazing sculture and video , take care, Bram

Cheers mate! It's great to hear that someone else heard about a black dog in the area as I know we're not too far apart, pretty cool. Our local and national folklore is something to be celebrated I think and I'm definitely gonna do more. Thanks again mate!

Incredible work, Clint. The next step in your carving evolution has been successfully taken! Thoughts and prayers for the fishtail...I feel that pain...

best sugestion on next one is to cut the side profile on the bandsaw to make it way easer to carve. I do that for most of my carvings

I was thinking of doing that but my bandsaw isn't the most powerful and takes a rather long time to get through thick wood unfortunately!

At first I was a bit taken back by the one eye but as the sculpture tuck shape it all seemed to fit and the eye really makes it look like a demon, the final finish is beautiful and to see it together with the finished plinth is perfect...also like the clay model you built as reference,I instantly thought put an Ork on it and call it a wild whagg 👍. Great video.

I have to admit the one eye threw me off a couple of times but I'm happy with how it turned out in the end. Thanks very much! Haha yes it does look a bit like it belongs in lord of the rings

Nice video. The varnish thing was a bit annoying. The only clue I would say is the fact it says low VOC on the bottle so it would make me think its not oil based. The video turned out well!

Yeah I was thinking that too but since it didn't say anything about water based I guess my brain skipped over it, still... Worked out in the end haha. Thank you sir!

How do you find carving multiple block glued together? I've never tried that before, always thought it might be more prone to breaking.

It's fine and is something that's widely practiced. You sometimes hit a little snag with little changes in grain direction but apart from that no issues.
