I feel like such a little kid because when you said "I'm fairly sure you haven't heard of this game before" I wanted to raise my hand and yell "I have I've heard of it!" lol

So pretty the modern card deck! I wish the store was still open :( Thank you so much for keeping this video I have just gotten into this beautiful card game. My best friend is Hawaiian and I am going to surprise him by learning this game and buying him a deck. He would talk about stories like yours about his grandfather playing this game and teaching him this. With your help, I'll get to even beat him at his own childhood game and we can both laugh <3

What a great explanation! On bgg, there's a solo variant with an AI opponent. It's designed for Koi Koi, but it works just fine for Sakura (Hawaiian style) too. I was trying to learn Koi Koi and found all the yaku too confusing. But your explanation made the Hawaiian yaku easy. So I think for solo play I'll stick with that. Thanks for a great mnemonic!

Spell I really love the last that you showed it makes figuring out what the matches are a lot easier than the other way like a pig the bird and the Butterfly is a very confusing stretch in my mind as a set.

$1.50 at Daiso. :) I thought I was buying ordinary playing cards with Japanese flower designs on them. When I opened the box to see them, I found out that they were a totally different type of card deck. So I end up here learning something new; it's fun and exciting!

Thank you so much for introducing me to hanafuda cards! I've never seen them or heard of them before, but they are so beautiful, and I especially enjoy games that have beautiful cards! I am gonna check out Amazon to see if I can find a beautiful deck of these cards for myself! P.S. I have enjoyed all of your videos that I've seen so far including Onirim and Friday, and this was no exception -- you are an excellent teacher -- thank you!

Oh my God I just about fell out of my chair when you started talking about sleeping when you were a kid and hearing your parents playing hanafuda in the other room and laughing because I'm adopted I'm white American my mom is Japanese and my dad's military and well my dad would be TDY my mother would have her girlfriends come over who are all Japanese women and they would play and speak Japanese all night long and exactly they would love and they would smack their cards down and I could hear it all night long and I always wanted to learn how to play unfortunately my mother has had a lot of health issues from accidents and so she's been kind of where she hasn't had the ability to play because of her hands being broken or her shoulder being broken or her back or what not and now she's in a nursing home and I've been trying so hard to find someone to teach me how to play this so I can play with her before she is gone. It would give her the most pleasure to play with me. She tried to explain it to me about a year-and-a-half two years ago but she has a hard time speaking in English to where I can understand what she's trying to tell me. I just wanted to tell you I got so emotional when you started talking about hearing your mom play out in the other room because that's how I remember or want to remember my mother in her happier times. I'm a comment again once I continue to watch this video.

ooh i am born and raised in Hawaii. My aunty taught my sister and me this game when we were little but she modified it to be a simpler matching game. We never played with yaku. But now that I'm older I want to learn the "real" way. Thanks for sharing this info!

Hi there, I know the modern hanafuda cards you showcase in this video have been discontinued, but I wanted to make sure you are aware of these other cards that were released last year. They are on playing card stock, so not quite the same as the heavier tiles. However the artwork is fantastic and simple, which really helped my daughter and I to learn how to play. There are three different decks at the moment, which you can buy separately or together in a nice case. If you still collect hanafuda cards you'll definitely want to check these out!

I didn't know in Japanese means Flower Cards. So is it called "Flower Cards Cards". Kinda like DC Comics where it means Detective Comics Comics.
