From an old hammock camper / hiker... get one WITH doors. You can pull them back if not needed. Better to have them along than to need them and not have them. Also... string up the doors ends to tree branches... the doors give more shade on hot days!

The two best decisions I made: 1) Winter palace tarp with doors, and 2) Under quilt protector.

I love my doors. Even if it weren't for the extra rain protection, the ability to block the wind helps to keep extra warmth in when the temps drop.

Thanks for the insight. Iim in the UK and use a DD Tarp, either the 3m x 3m or the 4m x 4m if I'm looking for more coverage. It's a square tarp with 5 tie points along each edge. Normally it tie out the corners, but if the weather is looking grumpy I can use the next tie outs and fold the corners in like doors. Keep up the good work

DD makes great tarps... I have a 3x3 for the side of my RV to make a sun shade, rain cover, picnics etc. but I hike and Hammock camp in Colorado Rocky mountains with various tarps that have doors. My favorite rough bad weather tarp is The Aquaquest Defender 13' x10'. People think I'm crazy for carrying it but it's saved more than just me in a bad storm! I had two people on different trips that came under because their tents failed in bad weather.

New hammock tarp designs do help avoid a lot of mishaps and require less thought/planning. I've been hammock camping long enough to remember the old JacksRBetter 8' diamond tarps. When the weather was bad, I'd hang my tarp about 4 feet off the ground with my hammock buried right up in the tarp. I'd have to crawl to get in, but the wind and rain wouldn't make it through when hung that low. My hammock would be touching my pack sitting on a groundcloth. Plus, the diamond tarps only required two stakes. Don't get me wrong. I like my 12' tarp with internal pole mods and doors, but a tiny tarp can work if you modify your pitch.

So glad I'm finding more channels doing stuff I like to do! Just discovered you not too long ago and I'm lovin' it! :D

Saw yours and did some looking around and got a Hammock Gear Dyneema Fiber Palace tarp with doors, door tie backs, camouflage and I love it. I love rain. I love it all. It's lite as a kite and my dog loves it.

Ever since I watch your tarp mod video, (seems like so long ago) I always knew I wanted doors and have that option if needed. Great video!

Thanks for the video :-) You said you were going to do one since I asked you this exact question about a month ago. Since then, I did order a tarp with doors, and let me tell you. Went on an overnight to test out the equipment, and had about 30% rain chance, BUT..... a thunderstorm came though during the night and it rained SOLID for about 3 hours. At that moment, I was very thankful for the purchase. Not to mention, my buddy I went with was only using a bivy tent and ended up moving under the tarp as well. Love the tarp with doors and THANKS for the videos :-)

I close my doors a bit out of the norm. Technically manufacturers want you to use additional stakes to guy out. I just didn't want to carry extra crap.

@@FrozensAdventures i was wonderimg if supposed to use inside hooks somehow but that didn't make sense for me. I used some elastic cord today, attached it to my "corners" and I attach my doors to those. Works so well and fits regardless of if I have tarp wider or not.

Based on your previous video about your gear for the AT, I bought a Camouflage Dyneema Tarp with doors. I like that it was bigger and lighter than my silpoly mini-fly tarp I bought from Warbonnet. The doors provides the added protection from the rain, wind and retaining heat during the cold winter nights.

I went with the doors after one of your first videos on the cross clips. It works great. Also, rain doesn’t always fall straight down.

After having one of those nights, I purchased Dyneema tarp with doors and love it !

I was all set to order a new dyneema tarp with doors and then my truck broke down. Now the tarp will have to wait!😬 I'm still using my old Edge tarp and it has kept me dry so far.

I just rig a basic ground cloth to my twine-based gear suspension system. I've also found that just cocooning the hammock in the ground cloth works as well.

I was just recently camping in a swamp and set up my tarp in porch-mode to enjoy the sunrise. The sunrise was great but I had a sticky night from all the dew that drifted in. The next few nights I closed the tarp down at night (A-frame with doors closed). I stayed completely dry with no stickiness. Doors are worth the weight of gold. I actually thought porch-mode and open doors with more ventilation would keep me drier but that's not how it worked out. I was surprised.

Thanks for this video, after last weekend I wondered if I should get a tarp lighter than my Superfly. After a 45deg breeze at night, I found the extra 4-5 oz worth it. Rain would have sealed it. I was still wrestling with a smaller tarp. I think I'll save my money.

The underquiltprotector, isn’t that basically the same as a double layer hammock with more space in between?

Pretty different actually. The UQP is meant to protect the underquilt from rain and wind. A double layer hammock is meant for keeping a sleeping pad in between for those who that use pads over underquilts. It also makes hammock a little less stretch or for heavier users.

Honestly I think doors are a no brainer for backpacking. Especially here on the east coast where afternoon thunderstorms can come in fast and heavy. For the % of extra money just get one with doors and have the piece of mind that you are prepared...

I still use my original tarp a warbonnet mamajamba without doors but I do have the removable doors for it. I'm for a tarp with doors for sure my next one will have them built in.

I'm new to the hammock game. I bought a Hennessy and it came with a hex tarp. I then bought a typhoon that has blast panels, which are basically removable doors. I carry them but have not replied then as of yet. I do love the bigger tarp tho

I have found a near perfect balance with the Warbonnet tarp line. I have a Thunderfly that is mostly taken with my gathered end hammock and a Mountainfly I pretty much only take with my bridge hammock. I found I don't really like full doors, and the beaks on these tarps are perfect for me. If they made them in DCF, the uber ultralighters would probably love them.

Agreed! And, if you don't want to drop HUGE amounts of money and would like the best of both worlds, check out something like the Warbonnet Mountainfly, like I have.

What I would like to see is more printed or other camo dyneema tarp options. Not enough out there.

My DCF tarp has doors, windows and a chimney.

I have. Problem is he basically loses money selling these. He's not a big enough operation to purchase that much dyneema at once.

The HG dyneema hex vs tarp with doors only saves you 2.14oz. or 60.5g.

Another option is a "Grizz Beak" that are doors that cover the ends of your tarp. They are made by 2QZQhammockhanger.com and you can get them in either silnylon or dcf composite (cuben) fabric.

Hey Frozen, I've watched all of your thru hike videos. Considering a hammock - questions for you - do you put your backpack in the hammock with you so it doesn't get wet? Isn't that uncomfortable if so?

I found that socks just make a lot of condensation. Id recommend looking into an underquilt protector. Dream hammock and other vendors make them.

Makes sense! Experimenting with a sheet of paper, I think I'm gonna try using clip on tie outs, and "make" doors on the tarp I have. I use a Hilleberg tarp that's rectangular. The ratio of the sides is 1.2.@@FrozensAdventures

What's good Frozen! Quick question. I'm having the hardest time picking a tarp for a future A.T. thru hike. If you had to hike the A.T. with a silpoly or silnylon tarp, which would you choose? Been going back and forth for weeks and haven't been able to make a decision. I've seen all your vids and I'm aware of the pros and cons for both but would love your input considering which fabric would be best suited for the rainy, windy, hot, cold, etc. climate along the A.T. sil-poly stretches slightly less than sil-nylon but in all but heavy winds it can be solved for either with a shock cord loop to maintain tension once its wet. i run nylon almost always because it seems a bit quieter to my ears.

Have you ever considered reviewing hammocks? I'd personally love to hear your thoughts as I'm currently looking and can't decide on one. Last one I looked at was the Clark NX-270 and it seems like a great setup but I'm just too indecisive.

personally i feel like everyone should try any gathered end hammock first and build it modular, separate bug-net ,fly etc. its a lot more important to get anything then to wait to hope the more expensive thing is the right thing. having used a lot of systems from lots of manufactures and having even made several of my own, i always gravitate back to simple gathered end hammocks for the flexibility and tinker-ability, hammock camping is defiantly more for tweaking than just running as a system its the versatility that can really give them an advantage in certain camping situations. have fun learning as you go.

What tarp do u have? I have a warbonnet ridge runner..would like a bit more coverage than I I have..for protection and privacy.

If you don't backpack a lot then yes it's a waste of money. But so are many other things that don't get used. Don't judge things on the cost but how much you enjoy and use it.

Once you go Tarp with doors you never go back.

So far I've managed to get by in high winds + thunderstorms with a tarp that's considerably longer than my hammock. Doors do seem pretty convenient, but I already spent a lot on my existing tarp.

The tarp I use is for people that use it very often and can justify the price. There are cheaper tarps out there. This video is not about a DCF tarp. It's about choosing doors or no doors.

Serkan Ister Well, Walmart works for some people. You could also use the plastic covering your car's broken window as a ground cloth. The rest of us will use what works best for us. Bet you don't extensive camping but if you can change your nasty attitude we'll work with you. Otherwise, put a cork in it.
