Hammer test on MT, AXOR, SMK, VEGA, STUDDS & AXXIS HELMETS

Hi,
In this video without any biasness have tried hammer testing by hitting helmets from SMK, VEGA, AXXIS, AXOR and MT with a 27.3Kgs Hammer (Mighty Thor Hammer XD)
Well the results were surprising to know watch the video :)
Let me tell you briefly if one helmet is flexing a lot that means shell and EPS is not dissipating the force generated by the impact correctly , rest you all know while watching the video :)

    This is just such a critical life savior video. Equally important to know as the mass in India are not for the AGVs, ARAIs and SHOEI ... but rather these brands. This saved me in making a wrong choice as I am about to go for an SMK, but not now. Cheerz Brother, this is a top effort in helping and spreading awareness among fellow riders. You are saving many lives here. !!

    A good helmet is supposed to break up on a heavy impact.. If it does not, then most of that energy is transferred to your skull during an accident.. This has higher chances of your skull cracking.. So they say a good helmet should break if it has a very high impact.. So according to this SMK helmets are one of the best.. Please do your research and your engineering before you come to a conclusion

  • @varadjoshi6523

    @varadjoshi6523

    9 ай бұрын

    @@emmanuelpraveen1Nahi bhai. Flexing is important. Not breaking. Difference hain. Of course any amount of flexing is not good. It has be designed and calculated properly. Many helmet manufacturers use flexing shells to better absorb impacts. However flexing also has downsides like extremely high impacts (almost unrealistic in any crash) cant be handled as well. Some helmet materials are designed to break in a particular manner if they are in a situation that force is too high. It is better if not break, but if it has to break then atleast break in such a way to disperse more impact. Eg fibreglass shells. Atleast this is what I understand after seeing helmet reviews.

    Best explanation I found online What is impact? A 'force'. It displaces our head. So that is energy. And without a helmet, this energy is absorbed by our head. And it is distributed in many ways. On motion, it is converted to kinetic energy and lost through friction and broken bonds in our neck muscles. Remaining is just absorbed by the head alone. First, the skull takes a part of it. How? By breaking bonds in itself. This may crack your skull. Second, by transferring vibration to the cerebral fluid. Now the cerebral fluid, like any damper, in motorcycles, forms eddies and dissipates energy through damping. This creates a shock on our brain, and we lose balance. Now, for all this to happen, we need a helmet that can absorb this energy or at least significant parts of it. So, let's assume that it does absorb energy. How? Well, since energy is always conserved, it should be dissipated in some way. First, the hard shell. The shell absorbs energy and transfers it to the intermolecular bonds. After this transfer, many of the bonds break and dissipates the energy. Rest of the energy is transferred inside. There is a foam layer, which acts as a sponge/spring with damper. This absorbs energy and starts vibrating, while damping it. This damping effect dissipates the energy. That's why you hear a ringing sound when you knock on a helmet. It absorbs the energy and transfers it throughout. It does this so that the helmet doesn't form a weak spot. Now suppose your helmet doesn't break at all. Who takes all the energy? You. Then you die. Or seriously injured. Thus, if the helmet does break at substantial impacts, maybe okay. But, it should not break at lower impacts, because that can mean it absorbs only a less amount of energy. The rest is transferred, again, to the head.

    I agree with this. A good helmet should absorb the impact, if it breaks, it means the helmet has absorbed the impact and most of the energy has gone into breaking the helmet which means less of the energy is transferred to the head / neck or body. A solid helmet would not break, but it might result in you having a broken neck

    I appreciate your efforts for a physical demonstration of impact on these helmets. The primary purpose of a helmet is to absorb the impact by itself & not by the head inside it. In that sense, a helmet breaking doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad helmet, it might just be good at absorbing impacts. Anyways, sophisticated testing would be needed to check how an impact affects the head inside it. Nevertheless, gread video dude!

    Great test, really appreciated. I know it may not seem so but this was a really expensive test and cannot be performed again and again, so thank you for taking the effort, for our safety! ❤️👍🏻 But I guess the test had too many variables like force of impact, position of impact, material of helmets, their flexibility, and the helmets squishing and sliding to absorb the impact. It would have been nice if you had placed a melon or something inside the helmets to see the results of impact. Although I know it may not be possible to try this again but, try contacting a few helmet manufacturers to send you their products for further tests. Thanks again! 👍🏻😇

    Helmet breaking absorbs a lot of the impact. Cheap Vega helmet saved me once when a coconut fell on my head, the impact cracked the helmet and I blacked out for 1-2 sec but luckily regained consciousness before I crashed. If that helmet didn't crack then the entire impact would have been transferred to my head and neck. You can see from the slow motion replays those first 2 Vegas are not absorbing much impact, they simply transfer the energy down.

Though everything alright till now, still I'm not that satisfied with it's quality, after two months, the bottom rubber liner came out for which I had to apply feviquik and it's intact since last 9/10 months, so clearly Axor used some worst Glue in that part!! Again, the pin of it's antifog visor just came out (lost), that 5 rupee pin will now cost me around 1000/- to get these two glasses changed!! I'm surprised with the results of Vega Bolt which costs 2/5th of Axor!! I wish I had purchased MT...but I'm sure my next helmet won't be one from Axor!!*

They are engineered to withstand multiple impacts and not just single impact. The materials used in helmets, such as polystyrene, are specifically chosen for their ability to absorb and distribute impact energy. The "crumble zone" or "crush zone" of a helmet may deform, it should not break or compromise the structural integrity of the helmet. The idea of a helmet is not just not to crack. That I’d say is the BARE minimum thing it is supposed to do for it to even be considered a helmet. What truly matters is how much energy it absorbs and how well it disperses or dissipates it, hence why HJC and likes are considered some of the best because the shell shatters upon impact dissipating the impact energy. Also why, these helmet shouldn’t ever be made to fall on the ground even, which could reduce their impact taking ability.

    The helmet should break. Also this test should have been done with impact indicating stickers inside the helmets. A durable helmet may just transfer the impact to the riders head and cause fetal injuries ( the way the second helmet was deforming on impact). On the other hand if a helmet breaks dissipating the impact and not transferring the force to the head it is much better.

I'll take my example when I was younger though a durable helmet is better. 15 years and 2 crashes later I have come to know that a helmet / safety gear is a consumable and should not be categorised under durable goods. These items have a defined end of life which many youngsters don't realise. It will be great to discuss various safety standards some day.

    This is not how the helmet safety is measured. It is by measuring the impact inside the helmet. For example in this video if you see the crash on second helmet, you could see how the helmet bends while it’s getting struck. Even though the helmet is not damaged, it transferred all the force inside and that is why it was not damaged. If you see the Axor/MT one, they were not deformed a bit on striking with the hammer but it got damaged, which means that they absorbed all the impact and did not transfer it inside. They save the head by absorbing the impact while the second one saved itself by transferring all the momentum to the head. Obviously no helmets should be reused after a single crash if you are too serious about the safety. It is not how the helmets save themselves from crash, but how helmets save what is inside them from crashes. I appreciate the effort you put in making this video but unfortunately, this one id misleading. Helmet crash tests are not done this way.

  • @leonbarua7712
    @leonbarua7712 Жыл бұрын

    People thinking that the helmets which didnt crack are stronger.....remember that safer cars also crumple when they crash so the force is absorbed by the car body. In this case, the helmet should absorb the force hence breaking it. If the helmet stays stiff or bounces back, all of the force goes to our head which may not cause skull fracture but it will surely slosh ur brain around and may cause a concussion or internal bleeding which is far more serious. That's why some cheaper cars have been seen crashing into expensive cars and not breaking, the unsafe car will stay intact and dissipate the force onto the passengers..
