    I really find some of the comments about this performance baffling. First of all, we don't have to choose. We are fortunate that we live at a time when we can click links and up comes Rubinstein, Hamelin, Zimerman, Rachmaninoff, Argerich and a whole host of great pianists. I think this is a beautiful performance -- commanding technique (I think it helps if you have studied this piece and therefore have an inkling of what it takes to play it at this level) and musical intelligence/sensitivity typical of Marc-Andre Hamelin. I'm very happy that we have it. Would I give up the performance by _______ (fill in the blank) for this? I don't have to!

    The fact we have access to so many high quality recordings is incredible. It is taken for granted. Before recording and the internet, one of the common class would be lucky just to hear anything by Chopin when it was written.

    People who have dreams and no take action on them are usually the ones who feel good about themselves in pointing the mistakes of those who are following their dream. In order to balance the frustration, they can only concentrate on what is wrong instead of just feeling the music.

    His technique is so all-encompassing that he has every second to caress the notes that he hit... one undeniable thing is that this really is outlandishly proficient playing. Such that this is bound to make me feel ambivalent: the sense of struggle and passion and overcoming is completely removed (to outlandish effect), yet the interpretation itself is eloquent and convincing. What to make of this remains uncertain after I watched this again and again.

    I'd love to see what the people criticizing Hamelin make of this rendition. Well it sure is a bit different, but he has quite a tone - that's a given. Bottom line: for me it's no less enjoyable and thoughtful than the praised Zimerman recording. As MrZnoo said: MAH and Katsaris own the day:)

    Hamelin's Chopin is incredible. The clarity in his playing is unmatched by any other pianist. The tone you refer to is that of clarity. His focus on tone clarity in the melody is as clean as one would expect in Mozart.

  • @donaldallen1771
    @donaldallen17716 жыл бұрын

    One other point: there's a lot of arm-chair quarterbacking going on here. I really don't think you are in a position (though of course you have the right) to criticize a pianist of the stature of Hamelin if you don't play this piece yourself and play it well, which I doubt is true of most of those posting nonsense here.

  • @bigl5343

    @bigl5343

    3 жыл бұрын

    Most comment section criticism is nonsensical as you say, but I believe most have a position to criticize despite personal level. Critiquing a professional as a non-pro comes out of comparison to other pros and perceived expectations of how something is to be executed. Stating that Hamelin missed a note is nonsensical. Nothing helpful or interesting can be derived from such critique, but critiquing interpretive choices or touch can lead to good conversation as to what one prefers or as to why performing one way is better. Hamelin is my personal favorite. His Chopin is performed with superb clarity unmatched by any other pianists. If one finds critical failing as no pros, their opinion has standing if they can defend critique with comparison to other interpretations or with current established precedent of how a piece or composer is supposed to sound like.

    I'm truly stunned by this - I've never considered Hamelin to be a poet/artist, just a virtuous who blasts through music as if it were meant to be torn to shreds. His understanding of the various melodic lines here is masterful. His tone is occasionally harsh, but overall this is extraordinary - until 5:08 ish.

    you guys are crazy, the slight errors in the wickedly difficult section are far less than even someone like Rubenstein makes, listen to his recording. Pointing out the few flaws in the pianists playing is short sighted and small minded. Take Martha Argerich for example, widely regarded as one of the best pianists living today. She makes glaring mistakes in her version of Rachmaninovs 3rd, however the speed and interpretation place her in a realm of her own, Hamelin's performance is accurate
