Ham Radio Satellites Tevel 5 & 7 Back Too Back Pass on the Icom IC-9700!

Ғылым және технология

Welcome back!
Join me for a back-to-back pass of Tevel 5 & 7. The satellites came in 3.5 minutes apart at almost the exact same angle of approach. I started out on 5 which was pretty quiet, then got busy. Towards the end of it I switch to Tevel 7 at mid pass to round them out. WD5GRW was at POTA US-3031 and made a decent number of contacts.
Great work Jim! I wish more stations would pay attention and call the Rovers. Rovers work very hard to get out in the wild, and do not get enough recognition for the hard work they put in. PLEASE if you hear a Rover go after them and give space for others to work them!! It is more important they get the calls than the regulars.
I also caught N7JRR in his mobile bombing down the highway at 70mph!! Great Work Andrew!!!

Good morning Robert, enjoyed the video very much. One of the things I like about your videos is is the ISS On the screen, that’s awesome. Looks like you got a heckuva setup. congratulations on getting a park on the air that was to put in a logbook. Hope you have a fantastic day and see you on the bird. 73 WD5ENH Steve

Thank you sir! I appreciate you watching and enjoying. Yeah I feel the footage gives the viewer something else to watch other than just a computer screen. Lots of reasons to watch and rewatch I feel. One of these days you’ll be on them and I can’t wait! 73!

Great videos all the time. Too many people using 100 watts to get into the satellites, 5 to 10 watts will always do fine. I am 100 percent portable and do a fine job with my 9700 and Arrow antenna, never had the need to use more than 10 watts. 73 de N2NWK

Most definitely! It is only needed IF you are trying to get to the fringe of the pass and ONLY IF YOU CAN STILL HEAR THE SATELLITE!

Great stuff as ever. Had a couple of successful ISS QSOs last night, then tried the Tevels without any luck. Status showed only Tevel 2 active, but having seen your video I’ll be giving 5+7 a go this evening, 73s!

Ah ha. If you use X you can follow David 4X1DG, he is the controller of the satellites and posts almost immediately following their activation. That is the best way I know to track them next to the above site.

Thank you for this video. I just assembled my 2m WIMO antenna, appears the same as your photo. Hoping it performs! My hope is to more successfully work (1st) ISS, then some other sattelites. Have been trying to contact the ISS for nearly a year - huge radio traffic here in SE Tenn / N Ga during ISS passes. Anyway, thank you for this video. KQ4IXD

Another cool video! I worked 5 & 7 on a different pass and I was hitting BOTH at the same time. I saw both downlinks on the waterfall about 5 Khz apart. My AFC couldn't decide which one to tune to so I had to turn it off before I realized what was happening. For most of the pass I was aiming at both sats and and had about 4 or 5 minutes that I was in both footprints. It was a west coast pass so only a couple contacts, I was really hoping it was the same pass when I saw your video title. I need to record more often for times like that. Your audio is almost always a notch above everyone elses, I can't figure out why the SE contact has trouble hearing. He has a very big yagi for 70cm now, I think its too narrow of an angle to aim accurately. He gets in the repeater ok but steps on people often. I use only a fixed elevation TPM2 antenna setup that is only driven loops with reflectors behind them, circular polarity so that cuts the receive down a few dBi. I hear just fine and it even works IO-117. I think he has like 17 elements on 70cm and if that can't hear well it must be aimed wrong.....like 2 degrees off. lol 73

Hey Aaron! That’s awesome man you have a great signal as well and very clear audio. That’s 9700 is a beast! Yeah PDI has a horrible reception on every pass. I think he has some major issues he is not aware of. I have thought about emailing him to chat about it. He usually runs close to 100 watts and doesn’t know he’s in the satellite. Which causes a lot of issues for people that are trying to make contacts. I noticed the same thing on this pass of the Tevel’s. When the first was overhead I could see the second one lighting up the waterfall. When I saw that is when I switched to it so the antennas would point away from the first one. This is a perfect example of why they are different schedules and turn off after 3 days. Their lifespan should be much longer also since they get a break. Thanks for always being out there also man! 73 for now!

@@KC0ECQ-HamRadioEndeavors Another thing about my setup, I have the Japan model 9700. It has 25w on 70cm and 50w on 2m. That combined with 2 element, circular polarized, antennas at fixed 30 degree elevation make it very handicapped (in comparison). I can not point directly at the sat, just in the general direction. But I can leave it in place for quite awhile before I notice any fade. If its pointed due east it is perfectly fine for all of NE/E/SE. I would struggle alot more if I had a long antenna with 10+ directors. 73

Man you put out a great signal though! Send me a few pics via email I’d like to see what your antennas look like. I can definitely see you doing better on the further out passes then woh a fixed angle. Have you tried getting on RS44? It usually has further East passes that I bet you could hold for a lot longer time since it takes 18-20 minutes for a full pass. Your sweet spot would be much bigger.

@@KC0ECQ-HamRadioEndeavors Yes, RS-44 is my favorite sat. It fades in/out a bit when the booster it is attached to tumbles but I get a solid 15-18 minutes to work it on better passes. I should do a video of RS-44 sometime. I'm a full-time dad with 3 little ones that make it difficult to video anything. Most of my radio fun is after they are in bed and I wear headphones. I may be able to use only the recorded audio so there is no background noise and I can still wear headphones but I won't be able to narrate LIVE. Anyone watching that type of video should know everything they see in the video anyway. I really like your video editing, choice of PIP stuff and intro. If you hashtag callsigns in the upload process, we should be able to search our own callsign and find our QSOs too. My antennas are not very photogenic but I'll send you an email of them. PVC and copper coated brake lines. 😀 73

Thats awesome! Yeah the recorder on the 9700 works great man you should try it and edit it all together. I appreciate the kind words about the videos man seriously. that keeps me going with it! I used to do the time stamps and have gotten away from it due to the time it takes in editing. I will definitely reconsider it though.

You are 100% correct! For the price I do not think there is anything better for satellite than an Icom IC-9700. The S.A.T. Controller is the absolute BEST thing on the market, nothing else I have seen comes close. The ease of use, portability, all in one aspect is unbeatable. Then you add the customer service they give the product and it was without a doubt the best money spent on any piece of my satellite system hands down. The best advice I can give to anyone starting out in satellite is this. Buy Once, Cry Once. I am not saying you can't be frugal, but you need to spend good money one time. If you don't, you will be constantly upgrading, or not happy at all and wondering why you wasted what you did for the performance you got. HF you can get an old HamFest radio for $300 and pitch an old piece of wire in a tree with a homemade Balun and talk around the world. The higher you go in frequency the higher you go in cost. Thanks for watching, if you end up trying to build a station and have any questions shoot me an email. 73!

@@KC0ECQ-HamRadioEndeavors awesome! Thank you! Yea im a full yaesu house... you name a modern yaesu and i probably have it lol. I guess i need to diversify for satellite. Honestly looking at all of the hodgepodge systems to get it working is just ehh. There is so little innovation in the ham world these days its sad. It seems that someone has a need, designs a widget, sells said widget, never improves on or expands because it doesnt meet their needs. I may have to break party lines and get an icom lol

I totally get it! My home HF is an FT-950 and it is the best sounding rig I have ever used. Portable is an FT-891. For VHF UHF I have always been an Icom guy. Icom is the only company that produces a true Weak Signal VHF UHF Full Duplex, all Mode Radio. You are right it is sad, it seems Amateur radio tech is stuck 30 years in the past. Now what you can do is build a system to work FM only for a while until you step up to the 9700. You can get the antennas, rotor, and SAT Controller setup in preparation for the 9700, and simply let the SAT unit control the rotor while you monitor the screen. You can then run a full duplex FM Dual Bander and manually adjust the doppler while the system runs the rotor. FM doppler is super easy to adjust for, especially if your rotor is controlled. Check out my portable setup video for an idea of how to set one up and maybe that is a cheaper option for now to get you going......Until you come to the DARK SIDE............ kzread.info/dash/bejne/lICow9WTopXNnLA.html
