    Thank you once again, just bought one of these in A1 condition to run with my ts-850s which as you know has an auto tune, but I like buttons and switches (call me old fashion), your video yet again is a good refresher learning curve.

    Very good - thank you. I may be mistaken but I think you should have done the calibration step first - If I am wrong then please put me right! I think this is done by setting the fwd/rev switch to forward and then transmitting a weak(ish) signal - just enough power to drive the meter to around fsd signal; I use a CW signal. Ensure that the dial reads at full scale deflection by adjusting the 'cal' knob. The dial is then calibrated. Then switch to rev and carry out the procedures as shown in the video.

    I use a low cost Zetagi atu (£15 from eBay) for the 11meter CB band and have just bought a second hand Global ATU1000 for other bands when I get my Foundation licence. Good to see that my trial and error has produced the correct operating procedure and that my impoverished budget has not been wasted :-) . 73's

    Hi Tim, I don't think I've never seen a manual AT 'how to' video, so thank you. I would agree though to tune for max noise in receive first. As an 'old timer' now I'd recommend any new licencee get a cross needle SWR meter - it might cost a bit more but is worth it. Some HF tuners have them built in. Also some tuners (QRP) can use a resistive bridge network for SWR indication/ tuning. This protects the transmitter against high VSWR damage as the worst it would ever see is 3:1. 73 G0JLF.

    R is impedance Tim. I like the T match. I use with an antenna analyser that displays R and X...and then SWR. I use a variety of rigs some of which have a 72 ohm output....others have the standard 50 ohm. I can tune for resonance (X) = 0 with a very wide range of input impedance (R). Clearly the SWR meter I have needs to be switchable between 72 and 50 ohm for accuracy.

    Very informative video cheers Tim , as a Foundation operator if I may ask a question . For a swr meter to show reflected power , Does the meter have to be calibrated as you would checking the swr , or does the reflected power just move to the position regardless using the calibration knob cheers

    very nice video - i was taught on my foundation licence on the principals behind a manual ATU and how to use it, was very interesting, nice to watch again. Do you have/need an artificial ground where you are ? I use one and I think its somewhat overlooked aspect of RF earthing for people that cant earth to an actual ground, and uses similar principals to the manual ATU.

    Great video, would you need to match the antenna every time you move frequency? What frequency would you recommend to use for each hf band ? 73's

  • @timg5tm941

    @timg5tm941

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes you need to re-tune when you move bands and sometimes when you move frequency within a band. As for the frequency - it really depends on the mode you are using (data, cw or voice). 73

    SWR is of course a ratio of forward power to Reflected power , I would want to look at the forward power as well as the reverse power levels when checking SWR match. It is possible to get a match but the antenna is so poor that your initial 100w is for example now only 50w as the efficiancy of the antenna is so poor. Would you still be happy to use that antenna just because it shows a good SWR ?

  • @Pedro8k

    Always tune on low power but listen first to check the frequency is clear then recheck tuning and swr if change frequency or tx power

    Ok so I've got an antenna tuner, my Yaesu FT450D has an atu built in but it won't tune my end fed on all the bands I want it to, hence the new antenna tuner. Now, my radio has a safety device which means the radio won't transmit when the SWR is bad, but I will need to switch this off if I'm to transmit and set up the atu. If I'm incorrect in any of the above then please feel free to comment below, also, does anybody know how I can get my radio to transmit on the lowest power possible so I can set the atu? Thanks in advance, Steve MM7STT PS I'm a newbie so please be gentle with me if I'm being awfully stupid
