You are a newbie???
Awesome review and educational. I am a retired marine captain, worked my whole life aboard boats with VHF and Single Sideband. I was hoping this radio can be manually programmed, happy to see in your video that it can be. I will probably get the programming cable because you recommended it. My radio should be in my hands in about a week. Thanks and thumbs up from Bobcaygeon Ontario Canada.
Hi there! I'm posting this from Brazil justo to thank you HOSHNASI for your contribution and effort. I totally agree that it's mandatory to know the radio, to learn some basics about using it, etc. etc. I'm investing time to get my license and to learn those things. Down here it's also a federal crime to Broadcast without a license. If I had view this first part video It could be far more easy to start that it was for me. Great contribution !!! Thank you again!!!! Keep doing this great Job!
Have been struggling to get my feet under me with programming and all for about a week. This absolutely made a difference.Thank you so much!
Total newbie here. Just got a Baofeng UV-5r MK4 8w for Christmas. Awesome video. I had no idea of how much there is to learn But your video has saved me hours and a lot of frustration. Thanks!
Best UV-5R and general Ham radio introduction video ever. Thanks!
New to ham radio 📻 and find this channel VERY helpful...Tanks soooo much. You’ve dumbed it down enough for a 65 year old with no prior experience to understand.... Tanks 👍🏽
What an amazing teacher this guy is. Packs a TON of information at high speed... very clearly. Very understandably. Going too fast? Hit pause.. scroll back a bit and play it again. Nice nice nice
with 2 of your videos and I've learned so much. i ordered the book and I'll be studying for my technician licence. Thanks. man. you truly got me going.

Like the rest of the viewers. I subscribed because I find this crash course very easy to follow and easy to learn. Kudos! You did a great job! I will view more of your videos. I am new to HAM radio and I plan to get my license soon.
Just got my Tech license and got a Baofeng to introduce myself to the world of HAM Radio. I looked all over for references on how to learn to manually program it before using the CHIRP option. Thank you very much. Thanks to you I have found the Miklor website and their manual. Between watching this video and reading through that manual it will give me a better understanding of the basic functions of Hand Held radios.
Dude Brovo, I had this radio sitting on a shelf didn't have a clue how to use it , your video was clear and easy to follow thank you very much , I know how to use it now and I'm getting my ham licence.
Got my radio today and getting along well with it, thanks to your great video. I was able to manually program to have coms with my GMSR sets as well as with the marine VHF in my boat. Basically, I bought it just for that. I don't mess with HAM or any other licensed frequencies. ONE THING I'd like to add to your review: - TX high / low can be easily be switched by a quick push of the "lock" button, in the lower right of the key pad. You will see a tiny "L" on the screen.
"Gardening With Vincenzo" here...Just purchased (2) of the Baofeng UV 5R A units and although I am just beginning to assimilate a wide variety of information including the steps necessary to obtain a Ham License, I was thrilled to "listen & See" the info presented specifically "How To" program the units and understand the "Why/Wherefores" of the default settings ! I had hoped that the manual would have covered that to some extent but did not ! Thanks for taking the time to post the information as although some folks say "Knowledge is Power:"...I Believe that its "True Value" lies in the sharing ! I also subscribed to the channel and will utilize your videos as an information resource... Keep Them coming Please...Thanks Again !

This helped a lot. I’ve been wanting to get a baofeng for awhile now and just picked one up. The learning curve is a bit more than I thought it’d be, which I’m happy about. It makes it much more interesting. Thanks.
Like everyone else has commented...one of the best explanations of the menus. Especially for us newbies. I followed along with my BF-F8HP and adusted several of the settings. Many thanks in 2022. The technical aspects of the video are outstanding, great green screen and very helpful showing the inserted video of manipulating the buttons while talking. Thumbs up and new sub.

I love your advice to not keep your radio on a shelf and think you can use it on a bad day. I've had my baofeng BF-F8 sitting in my gun safe for several years because of your channel I am now actively going to program it with the cable you recommended, I bought a second radio and a signal stick antenna and also for my older radio I purchased a Nagoya 771 antenna thanks for the great content, you have opened up a whole new world for me. BTW these baofeng radios are a "pregnant purchase" because it just whets your appetite for something better...
I have had two UV5R radios for a couple of years. They were programmed by my friend at the radio club. I was messing with one of them and screwed up the frequency list so this is the first time I have had to fix it myself. Thanks for doing this video so I COULD do it myself. Also the Miklor manual is much better than the factory one. I will be trying Chirp soon but your video got me started. Thank you. Dave K8WPE since 1960.
THIS is the one video that helped me get started...highly recommend this one and the whole series!
You are awesome at this! Thanks for the Baofeng "primer". I know I will be watching this again when I receive my BF-F9 V2+. Now if I could find a video on basic ham frequencies and tones and how all of that works together. I will be using my radio for listening for a while. The soonest I could be tested for a tech license here isn't until January so I have plenty of time to study and learn. We only have one repeater in my area that I know of and it is 15 miles away. I hope that with a better antenna that I will be able to use it. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Great video! Even though these radios ship with an English manual now, I still found this video VERY useful as the information in the manual is very limited.
I just received my general license and my first radio. I am not technically savvy but I love it anyway. Your video makes me feel like I can figure this out, so I commit to watching it until I do. Thank you so much.
Thank you. Please dont stop. Doing these video's I'm getting back into ham radios again. Was licenced . back in the 80s i was licenced . driving a service truck for a hvac co.Got the job because I was licenced. Now we have cell phones. I kind of miss having a radio. So thank you again.

I've had this radio for a couple of years now and you have given me some idea how to use the darn thing. Thanks!
Just got my F8HP. Did CB as a kid...years ago. Thanks for your hard work. This is going to be a fun journey.
Fantastic tutorial, as usual. Thank you sir. As a side note, the DTMF tones are used to lower/raise railroad crossing gates on most major RR’s. I’m sure it is used for other purposes as well.
Great video. The DTMF tones are transmitted (when enabled) when you press the keys on the radio. DTMF tones are used to dial a number when a repeater is set up with an autopatch. An autopatch allows a repeater to make a telephone call. You had better be licensed to use a repeater. Fun fact. If you momentarily press the * key, the displayed frequency will change to the transmit offset frequency. For repeater use there is, as was stated, a transmit and receive frequency. So when programing repeater frequencies into a channel, you program the receive frequency first, press exit, hit * to show the transmit frequency, then menu and then down to channel (Make sure you on the right channel), menu again and the transmit frequency is stored. Press Exit then press * again to go back to the normal receive frequency. This saves having to type in two frequencies. I know, use Chirp, but I am lazy to make a cable.

@Ham Radio Crash Course - would love it if you could put the sites you cite (ie Repeater Book, Radio Reference, et al) in the video description for reference... just to tidy up for those of us who are trying to follow with such references. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you for teaching us how to use the radio. My family and I are using your videos as learning tools... Thank you!!! BLESSINGS
Thank you! I've had this radio on the shelf for months because understanding it wasn't intuitive for me. This is a great resource and will have to look at the other vids, maybe even try for the Technician license.
Thanks so much for doing this video. I ordered one of these radios with plans to use it for FRS. After ordering, I discovered I need an HAM license to use this radio. So, I am going to study for a HAM license.

I strongly recommend to put the alarm mode to SITE. If you accidentally hit the alarm, it will only flash the LED and send out an oscillating tone through the speaker. Otherwise, it will transmit the tone whatever frequency (or frequency pair) that is currently set for CHANNEL A.

I am sure you probably know this +hoshnasi, but I discovered something by accident this evening I thought might be handy for others to know as well and figured this video was a good place to mention it. If you press and hold the "0" key the radio will display your battery voltage ie" DC8.1V " or whatever your current level is. This is a little more detailed information than just the little battery status icon in the corner.

Excellent video! Well-presented, edited and very informative. Thank you very much for your efforts. It definitely beats reading the manual.
The on/off knob is also a tool to tighten the antenna nut. It pulls off and fits over the antenna lug and fits in the slots so you can hand tighten. Not all uv5’s have dual receivers.
@christianclark2763

I had to pull mine off to check. That's awesome!
If you lightly press the # key on the key pad, you can go between high and low power. Some uv5r's also have a medium power setting using that method. But if you press and hold that # key, it locks and unlocks the keypad.
Thanks! This was such a big help. I’m thankful that You took the time, effort, and expertise to make this video.
Great information! I have wanted to get into HAM for a long time. I saw these radios for cheap and there are people who suggest them for a low cost way to get into HAM. I also do some prepping and knew these would be useful. My wife is also on the road quite a bit making grandkid runs. I used to have a beautiful FM business band radio system with a 85 foot break-over antenna pole, with the antenna it hit 97 feet so I didn't have to put lights on it. It was a duplex system with my own repeater, and I had a phone patch because this was in the time before cell phones. I drove a school bus at the time and the phone was very handy. I could get out 90 miles from the antenna and communicate home. Yes, Kansas is pretty flat. When I was forced to leave farming because I became disabled I sold my 30 grand setup for a pittance. I almost no saled it, but I had no real need for it since cell phones were finally small enough and cheap enough and had enough coverage that they were finally worthwhile. And that was the concession my wife made so I would sell my radio system. Anyway, HAM should be fun. One question, though, will my wife also have to be licensed or will mine suffice? Anyway, I'm glad I happened on to your videos. Thanks.

btw standard offset for 2mtr is 0.600 =+/-(below 147.00 - ...above 147 +,,generally) for 70cm is 5 +/- mhz otherwise very useful :)
