The Bottom of the Well gets even worse when you think about the fact that despite all the things in there, it's still a well. Meaning that the good folks of Kakariko Village, are drinking from that well, unaware that water isn't the only thing in there.

Pretty crazy how Forestia managed to do the entire “disturbing horror game disguised as an innocent children’s title” gimmick decades before it became a popular trope in indie horror. And the crazy part is that it actually WAS an innocent children’s title. It’s nothing new for kids games to have some scarier moments, but I can’t get over how oddly ahead of it’s time this was.

I was very surprised that this game was known abroad, especially in the United States. I used to play this game when I was a kid, maybe 5-7 years old, and I continued after that. It was a very small French development studio that created this game. It only made Forestia and two or three versions. I was born in France as well, so this game was quite easy to find at the time (although it was a very small game for children, it was not on the shelves in stores). In fact, I had this game in my family thanks to my operator "Orange", who gave gifts with the packages a very long time ago ... The first time I accessed the red level of the game and where everyone dies, I thought I had a heart attack. I was so not expecting this! I don't know if the developers did this on purpose to introduce a message or to elaborate a theory, or whatnot. But I think a simple guess would be that since the game is very dated (even back when I played it it was pretty outdated) it accentuates the horror side and the developers just wanted to surprise the kids. , without necessarily scaring them too much. In addition, we see one of the animals that we see previously in the game, talking to us quite quickly after entering this level, and the reaction of this same animal is quite "crazy", it remains in the humorous framework of the authors of this same game, which can reassure the player. If the developers had really wanted to scare the players, they would not have included this humorous figure, which seems quite absurd in view of the situation, and which is in line with the rest of the game.

That moment from 'Forestia' probably counts as what Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic) calls "a BIG-LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT!" It comes out of nowhere, completely goes out of tone with its weirdness compared to the rest of the game, and then goes away without ever being mentioned again for the rest of the game.

The especially scary thing about the Strange House is that... Darkrai _isn't_ malicious. Not generally, anyway. At the time of Gen IV, which takes place before Gen V, Darkrai secludes itself on Newmoon Island, right next to the resting place of the only Pokemon that can counter its effects. Its nightmare-causing properties are an involuntary defence mechanism that it can't turn off. Even the Pokedex in the very games with the Strange House states that it _means no harm._ This girl _died by accident._ Darkrai didn't even try to kill her, it just happened to be in the area while she was asleep and trapped her in a perpetual nightmare until she wasted away, and Cresselia wasn't fast enough to save her.

So fun fact about Undertale's True Lab: The music in this area uses sounds samples from EarthBound. There's a couple of sources, but the big one is Cave of the Past. What's funny about this is that Cave of the Past uses sound samples for a Beach Boy song. So It's a sound sample... of a sound sample. Also, the battle theme (Amalgam) Only uses EarthBound sound fonts for the songs, make it a pure AMALGAMATION of sound samples.

I think what also really makes the Bottom of the Well in OoT even creepier are the implications of its existence. In the OG 64 version, the environment featured a disturbing amount of blood that seemed to paint the walls and floors, and it was usually around where certain…. instruments were. Kakariko was initially inhabited by the Skeikah, who as we all know were devoted followers of the Royal family of Hyrule, but also trained assassins and spies. The fact that they housed a torture chamber beneath their village goes to show just how far they went with their work, and now it’s inhabited by animated corpses and spirits…… yeah.

Ah, boy, here we go again: 10: I've never been that big into Yoshi, though killer clowns are disturbing no matter the circumstances. 9: Metroid is definitely soft horror, though if I'm not mistaken, this was the game where the shift happened, so I'll allow it. Oh, and Samus would definitely win. 8: Halo gets a bit better at not being a horror game in later installments, but yeah, this was terrifying the first time around. 7: Okay, I'm surprised a track from World of Goo wasn't at least an honorable mention on the last list. 6: Good job going for the other other obvious pick (that one was for you, fellow Wambu fans). 5: If we were talking about a disturbing level based on music alone, N's house would be here, because N's Room is arguably one of the scariest theme in Pokemon history. Still, this is a REALLY good pick. 4: Still think that the Underworld with the song that is often considered SCARIER THAN SONGS FROM SILENT F***ING HILL would take this place, but boy, am I wrong. 3: Stupid water wraiths. Not to mention that one of the scariest final bosses in the Pikmin franchise may or may not be the water wraith's golden cousin. 2: I'm surprised that the True Lab got this high, but I can see why. And while counting this may be cheating, this place holds another secret when you start fiddeling with the code of the game; Entry Number 17. Alphys isn't the only scientist who caused some screwed up and disturbing things to happen in Undertale. Though I must admit... it's rude to talk about someone who listening... :) Honorable Mention 1: More of a fun Halloween level than actually disturbing, but it stands on both sides of the border. Honorable Mention 2: ANY FINAL BOSS FIGHT FROM KIRBY COULD EASILY MAKE THIS LIST, though I suppose that's a list for a different time. (did he already make one and I'm just stupid?) Honorable Mention 3: Still think Scarecrow is scarier. Honorable Mention 4: This is exactly why I haven't finished A Hat In Time. Do you blame me? 1: Yep. That'll do it. No arguments for placing this one at Number 1. There's probably a reason why this game has never been heard of. Also, normally he gives us an outro that hints at what he's going to do next, but he didn't this time. To me, this means that either he doesn't know exactly what he's doing next, he's taking a break, he forgot to write one this time, or the next episode's clue has to do with Barney sacrificing the kids to an eldritch abomination. I really hope it's the last one, because because spooky stuff doesn't just have to happen during the spooky month.

You can actually skip Vanessa's manor. I myself did it on my first playthrough. There's a secret entrance on the left side of the basement when you enter that allows you to skip straight to the hourglass and avoid the horror segment. There are plenty of videos on KZread showing you how to do this. Useful both for speedruns and for people who don't like horror games. Plus a lot of stuff in A Hat in Time is actually optional for any% as you really don't need that many hourglasses to complete the game. Heck, I beat the game without even setting foot in the forth and final non-DLC world or completing the second world in its entirety.

really fun list Josh. for a neat honorable mention I would go with Hypocenter from Black Ops 3 of all games. Now the game is generally dark and violent but Hypocenter does a nice tone shift into more Horror and dread. Long story short, you follow a lead to an abandoned and semi-submerged facility. the level starts off normal but as you descend further the tone noticeably shifts and the atmosphere sets in. lifeless robots come alive and start attacking you in zombie-like hordes, isolation, moody lighting, and one point your tech abilities are deactivated, first time making you feel powerless since the prologue. towards the end it does go back action and explosions but for the most part Hypocenter became a great highlight to paythrough

10: That was interesting. Always been curious about Yoshi games. 9: While that segment was creepy, I give my Metroid point to The GFS Valhalla. The sheer emptiness of the abandoned wreck on top of the feeling I get that the entire nebula is made of Phazon Metroids gets to me even still. And to answer the question of Samus vs. Xenomorph, I think Samus would win. Genesis creatures basically are Xenomorphs and they go down from a couple shots of the Plasma Beam. And if that doesn't work, two words: Power Bomb. 8: Maybe playing the campaign at some point will soften my opinion on Halo. 7: Never made it that far in World of Goo. I should play it again. Thanks for the reminder. 6: Gotta love the Well. Thank you, Sun's Song. 5: My personal pick for creepiest Pokedex entry is Palossand: Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained. 4: I didn't understand what happened the first time I played because I missed the text box and wasn't paying attention. In my defense, I was 7. 3: The best part about the Water Wraith is that it's appearance is entirely random. Some people won't see the thing until they fight it at the bottom floor. Others will have it spawn seconds after dropping into the dungeon and need to deal with it the entire time with no breaks. 2: Very uncomfortable area. 1: Umm... okay? I'm reminded of the Mother 3 mushroom samba moment with the difference being that Mother at least has dark moments already. A random edutainment game doing it just comes completely out of left planet.

Another good one is the Okinawa Jail in Persona 5 Strikers. Before this level, all of the other Jails you visited were very fantastical settings like a flashy theme park, a gothic castle, and a worst-case scenario for Elsa’s winter. But that eventually changes in Okinawa when the Phantom Thieves’ brief respite at the beach is interrupted come nightfall, where the brainwashed locals try to ambush them and they’re forced to seek refuge in the Metaverse. What follows is a level that feels like something straight out of a Resident Evil game, as you travel through the narrow hallways of a ruined laboratory and fight off more Eldridge-looking Shadows like Legion and Black Ooze. You find various notes and recordings related to what happened to the test subjects on the island, as well as the unfortunate fate of the Jail’s Monarch. While the atmosphere and music are definitely unsettling, what makes the Okinawa Jail so creepy is how it gives us a glimpse of what could happen to a cognitive zone in the Metaverse if it’s original creator were to die before a Change of Heart; a “Mental Graveyard” as Ozaich puts it.

I would have included either the Cave of Bad Dreams or the Tomb of the Ancients, both from Rayman 2. The first one already puts you in the mood with the Guardian transporting you in like a nightmare, then the hands trying to grab you, the monsters who straight-up EAT you, and of course the chase at the end with the camera positionned inside the Guardian's drooling maw. More spoopy than spooky in some aspects, but the ambiance combined with the fact it's an early level AND the lore surrounding both the Guardian and Rayman, make for a pretty scary experience. The second one has the most dreary music in the game to start with (and one of the scariest I've ever heard), with the level taking place in a cemetery. You see tombs everywhere, ghosts coming at you more agressively than ever, giant spiders attacking you with the first notes of Psycho's main theme, and even zombies in the PS2 version ! Worst of all, is the goo you see everywhere, reeking of death. That's because the Robo-pirates (main enemies of the game) have descralized these tombs by digging up ancient corpses to fill them with their dead instead. So yeah, the water killing you in this level ? *It's corpse juice.* But still, another great list, Josh. Thank you ever so much for your great work.

Nice to see you included the Shinra Building massacre in the opening scene. Personally I think the most unsettling parts of Final Fantasy VII are when you're at the Northern Crater and then later in Mideel (which I just realize is a bit of a pun). Sephiroth's consciousness taunts and gaslights Cloud until he suffers a nervous breakdown and gives the still dormant Sephiroth the Black Materia, Cloud then washes up in Mideel and is in a vegetative state until he and Tifa fall into the lifestream where she literally pieces his mind back together. The nice little epilogue to this is going back to the Shinra Mansion and finding out how he and Zack escaped.

This one is long, but please bear with me. My pick would be the second mission of Star Wars: Republic Commando, the Assault Ship. More specifically the first chapter is where your team goes into separate areas of the ship to gather intel, which means in your area of the ship you are alone. The reason why this works is that the whole draw of the game and its biggest strength both gameplay and story-wise is your team of other clone commandos, take that away on any other level and it is an absolute nightmare. But here you are alone and you will be for a while. It also helps that in some sections of the ship there is no light and you have to use night vision, the problem is that night vision in this game is in black and white and has a grainy film quality to it. The level begins with your team wondering where had all the crew gone, and the suspicious static that sometimes hits the helmets and comms. Then all of a sudden one of your teammates starts shouting over the radio and it gets quiet. Later you meet a survivor who is hiding in the torpedo bay, who is then later killed by a new enemy, a probe droid of some kind. It then attacks you and you kill it relatively quickly after it latches on to you. Then you later come across more bodies of dead crewmates and clones. who you see are fighting another kind of enemy, which are Trandoshan mercenaries. They are manageable, but it would be easier if you had your squad with you. I won't go over everything to keep spoilers to a minimum. I wouldn't put this high on the list since after discovering the true threats it is not that scary anymore and once you reunite with your squad the Trandoshans and droids go down much easier and the level essentially becomes a defend ship segment with more droids attacking. But that opening chapter where you are alone just takes the cake.

Also, an honorable mention to me would be Ultra Ruin from Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. Most players likely won’t experience it since it’s a *very* rare spawn point in the Ultra Wormhole. But once you do so, you’re treated to this empty, desolate city with no people but a couple of survivors who warn you of how dangerous things are around here. At the end you encounter the massive Ultra Beast Guzzlord, which means that the people previously living there were either driven away…or even worse, *eaten* by Guzzlord! But what makes this even worse is that the music is a distorted version of Hau’oli City. AKA the biggest and most bustling town in Alola, and so to see such a place driven to nothing but ruin in another dimension is just super creepy and morbid. So as chilling as the Old Chateau or Dream House can be, Ultra Ruin will always stand out to me as a pure reminder of how messed up Pokémon can be.

Ha! What do you know, one of my predictions was on point when I guess World 6 from Super Paper Mario after a 'certain event' lol. Another game I just thought of was Omori. I know it has horror elements in it, but I don't know if I would consider it Horror considering all the areas you visit in the game, both in Sunny's head and real life. I would definitely add Black Space though, that whole area is just . . . OMG! Especially when you go for the True Ending route and learn the 'truth' of the overall mystery of the game.

Technically the True Lab in Undertale originally belonged to W.D. Gaster who made the DT Extractor that Alphys would use to extract determination from the human souls that had been collected after the death of Asriel and Chara when Asgore declared war on humans. W.D. Gaster was the one to experiment with determination first and when he disappeared through time and space from one of his experiments going wrong he left his notes on the extractor behind. Once Alphys managed to trick Asgore into letting her take over the position of Royal Scientist from Gaster, she discovered the True Lab and all of Gaster's left behind notes, rebuilt the DT Extractor and started the determination injections on fallen monsters and the golden flowers that grew from the dust of Asriel all those years ago. The reason why monsters aren't compatible with determination is because monsters are made out of magic instead of having a physical body like humans, it's why when a monster is killed or dies they turn to dust instead of leaving a body behind.

I am so glad that finally somebody acknowledged how terrifying the Industrial part in World of Goo is. No, I am happy and grateful that somebody mentioned this classic childhood game of mine in the first place. Also, I'd say Cuphead deserves an honorable mention as well. Especially the part where you literally destroy Phantom Express's exposed, beating heart that spews fire. Sheesh man, that is terrifying to me to this day...

I still can't get over the fact that in Majora's Mask Link left a little girl with her insane mad scientist of a father who was either trying to create the perfect wife to replace the one that was conspicuously missing or researching the dead to bring back his wife that had died. He just.....leaves them. He gets the Gibdo Mask and leaves them. And assumes everything is fixed. That Pamela isn't in any further danger. In the land of the dead with an adult that literally brought or kidnapped her to such a hostile environment just to bring back his dead wife or create a better one that he would prefer. I'll chalk it up to Link still being a child at that time and being partially naive and innocent. He was raised by forest folk anyways. It's still massively messed up.....

I got one: Giant’s Lair from Bug Fables. Lord in heaven. That game has some creepy areas off the beaten path, but this one part of the main story takes the cake.

Lohengrin Castle from Trails of Cold Steel 1. In Laura S. Arseid's Hometown of Legram, where your 5th field excursion take place in, 2 kids go in there, as a sort of Simba going to the Elephant Graveyard scenario. Your party consists of Rean Schwarzer, the main protagonist, Laura, a blue-haired female Cloud, who actually has more character than Lightning from FFXIII, Emma Millstein, Class VII's Class President and (spoiler alert) a witch, Jusis Albarea, a noble with a chip on his shoulder about his lineage, and Millium Orion, one of the "children" handpicked by Osborne himself who joins Class VII after Chapter 4 along with Crow Armbrust, the rival/best friend of Rean Schwarzer. You get some Scooby Doo vibes while exploring the castle, only instead of anime high school students trained in various weaponry, and the enemies consist of possessed moving swords, disturbing fiends fused to unicycles, and the like. The boss against the Nosferatu, while frustrating if you're not careful, also adds to the spooky, haunting tone of the castle. A history lesson about it though. Spoiler alert again, the castle was once home to a legendary maiden unmatched with a lance named Lianne Sandlot. Dreichels trekked back to Erebonia during the War of the Lions, which was a battle for succession of the throne, Dreichels intended to end the war and gathered several followers from the land of Nord, where he befriended them, and met her in Legram. Lianne was also in love with Dreichels and wanted to bear his children, but died at the age of 25. Also, fun fact, if you haven't played Cold Steel 3 and 4, this may escape you at first, but a clue you see is a door with a mysterious symbol on it. That symbol is the trial of the Awakener, and Lohengrin Castle was the trial ground for Argreion, the Argent Knight, one of the strongest of the 7 Divine Knights.

Wouldn’t personally consider that level too creepy, but you’re clearly enthusiastic about Trails (particularly the only game in the series I’ve finished so far), so you still get a like from me.

Hyrule Castle, Wind Waker. We've seen it overrun before, but unlike A Link to the Past where the theme is a bop, the WW uses a more subdued variant. When you first enter, there is only faint bits of chorus. Monsters are everywhere, some in the middle of swinging their weapon. All of them frozen in time just like the rest of the place. Then after obtaining the Master Sword, the full song comes in, starting with the chorus before an organ gives a slow, somber variant of the theme... And all the monsters move again as the color returns to the place. Slightly downplayed by the battle theme still playing as per normal.

Fun fact about the Bottom of the Well A person in Kakariko mentions that the well is positioned where an old house used to be in the village. The bottom of the well is a most likely an underground torture chamber that used to be owned by said person, who was more than likely a member of the Sheikah based on their dark history in Hyrule & their connection to the Shadow Temple, which according to the game is where the greatest enemies to the Royal Family are imprisoned.

Funny thing about the pokedex, since professors entrust them to us the trainers when we reach the age of 10 to 16, our protagonists are basically making up the entries based on what they are guessing, like the fact that one of the Pokemon is apparently hotter than the sun, or even stemming from horror stories about the pokemon like Drifloon, or the childish, yet surprisingly creepy theories toddlers make from time to time "The windows breathe even when they're closed" is a prime example
