Japanese police have arrested a 24-year-old man who, dressed as the Batman villain the Joker, used a kitchen knife to attack and injure 17 passengers riding on a Tokyo-bound train on Halloween night. Police said the suspect, who identified himself as Kyota Hattori, also set fire to the carriage as it came to a stop at Kokuryo Station in Chofu. After the October 31, 2021, incident, the suspect also reportedly told police he hoped to kill at least two people so he would receive the death penalty, and that he was inspired by a similar attack in August 2021.

Can we quickly applaud the people who helped each other get out of the subway safely. Some people were risking their life inside the train to get others out by pushing them out, while others who were already out didn’t leave the scene. The made sure the people coming out didn’t get injured since the window was quite high from the ground.

@@benisrood From what I've read, the emergency lever was pulled before the train could properly align with the doors, prompting the train to stop immediately. Windows were probably the best escape route. Not sure how it is with trains over there but where I'm from, window glass on trains are easier to break than the ones on the doors. We even have a designated tool to do so lodged beside every window.

Cosplay is already a trend there so Halloween is just cosplay day pretty much. Halloween comes from as I know it Allehelgensaften AKA "All Saints Day" which is of Christian origin but the reason USA has a totally different tradition from this is because its mesh of multiple different cultures coming or already living in the area. Overall American Halloween traditions are gaining a little popularity in other countries quite recently since it's mostly open for all types of people. --------- So, to reiterate more clearly Halloween is only an American holiday but knowledge of its traditions are growing more and more.

The joker dude planned this attack out scarily well. This was on a Limited Express train that was going to skip a ton of stations, and the Keiō Line in Chōfu city is underground, making it difficult to escape. Also, the next station after Chōfu has platform doors up to the ceiling, so the conductor had to run the train up to the next station, and even then the train wasn’t properly aligned with the platform gates when it stopped so most of the doors were blocked off by a barrier. Now imagine how disastrous this would’ve been during rush hour… Keep in mind this is a very important commuter line for people going to the suburbs west of central Tokyo. EDIT: The reason why the train stopped improperly was because passengers used an emergency door mechanism that causes the train to immediately stop where it is.

A similar incident occurred in Sydney, Australia, while I was on an early morning train. A woman with mental illness was trying to stab people with a screwdriver. I remember people were running into my carriage from the other one and it was quite scary. Of course it doesn’t compare to this incident which was premeditated and the intent was clear. Next year I was meant to travel to Japan with my schoolmates to visit a friend. They came to my school as an exchange student but after a year they were sadly forced to leave to Japan due to COVID. The worst part is they are a gifted volleyball player and a week after they left we were matched against the best school in our district ( former national champions). We narrowly lost against them in the tournament but if our friend was there it would’ve been different.
