Gene, you should know.... Coming from you, you've put out hundreds of top notch carvings and videos yourself. You watching less known carvers and giving them kudos says a lot about you and gives those carvers the incentive to put out more original carvings.

Got a question…with all the carving you do is there hand stretches you do. I have developed some thumb pain and it’s uncomfortable if I carve too much in one day. Does it go away if I carve long enough?

I personally have made it a habit to carve in short time spans, usually about 1 hour or so, and then give myself a break. This has cut down on fatigue, and also gives my mind a break so that when I come back to the carving, I am completely refreshed.

A very fun carving that I enjoyed. Took longer than expected but good outcome. However, if I glue the nose on again, the nose will be sculpted out of only glue. I am going to make another and leave final nose toward the end. Second one went much faster and didn’t have to glue nose on as I waited to totally finish the nose.

oh man What a light touch with a knife, I'm going to have to do a lot of those. just to learn how to cut that fine eyes and nose beyond me at the moment, but maybe one day. beautifully done. lol to do that nose was thinking may soak in super glue once I get close

They are not split, but cut on a band saw (you can see the saw marks). One could split them with a hatchet or similar tool, but it might not yield perfect results.

I have made a few of these without splitting the block. I use about a 1" square, 4" piece. I carve the witch on the corner, and then carve away the back almost flat. Leaving the square block intact gives me ample room for creativity. However, sure, you might consider that not splitting the square in half, you are wasting wood. But I have a ton of these blocks, so for me, I don't mind. Besides, I don't have a band saw or any kind of saw that would make splitting it down the middle functional, and it takes too long to cut it with a hand saw. Anyway, that is my method without splitting the piece before carving. :-)
