    I think the F45s and SDF40-2s looked just as good in freight bonnet blue, but I'm glad ATSF realized the mistake painting the FP45s yellow and went back to Warbonnet after a couple years. It's nice so many FP45s survived to carry the torch of not only the super fleet, but the ATSF passenger service before it that inspired the scheme. The FP45s are cool to me because to my knowledge they're the only units who got to use the Warbonnet scheme in the 90s which had previously worn it when the scheme was used for passenger service. In essence they were the only "true" Warbonnets on the whole ATSF at the time. Fitting they rode our their careers into retirement soon into the BNSF merger. As the sun set for the Warbonnet, so too did the sun set for the FP45 - the last Santa Fe Chief. .. That said, poetic as it is, BNSF should _totally_ bring back a pair of these for a heritage fleet, maybe match them up with GN 441 which may or may not be at risk of being sold soon. That way they'd have a couple PTC-compliant MU-capable heritage engines to run as backups/helpers for 3751/2926. (441 could serve as a tool/crew car) I know 3751 and 2926 aren't officially "BNSF heritage engines" the way 4014 and 2816 are, but, just look at them, BNSF clearly wants everyone to know those are SANTA FE engines.

    The looks don't send me as much as the sounds, although some smoke was great. These older six-axle road units had a terrific sound. Newer engines in this era of smokeless giants is not me cup of tea. I'll be 80 in just a few days. Mar. 4, 2024, St. Joseph, MO, USA. I grew up in and around Bound Brook, NJ where I witnessed the big transition from steam to diesel.

    This is what I think the U.S needs: More cowl units in freight service. The EMD F45/FP45’s look cool. And they are cool.

    I am also a fan of the F45's and FP45's. My first in person sighting of an F45 was a BN unit while I was a passenger on an Amtrak train in 1980. I can still remember it like it was yesterday.

    some of the freightriders have home videos of going through the tunnels in Tehachapi section, and you could see the dates set in the concrete when they were constructed....1917...1919 etc. Still good quality passages, to this day, beautiful land and trees all around. "Ran Out On A Rail" is one of the young men, with multipal videos. Places no one usually get a look at. Thankyou again Charles.

    Somewhat ironically despite the long curves and winding switchbacks meant to "ease the grade" as you said, Tehachapi still ended up being one of the steepest grades in the west. A testament to the men who surveyed the routes and built the grade that their best work could still only bring the grade down to 2.4% In other parts of the country that _would_ be the "direct assault" on the grade, but out west, that's the scenic route.

    Yes, the men who surveyed this route did one amazing job. And the story of the burro leading SP engineer William Hood around "Walong" is the stuff of legend. It was the pack "burro" that climbed and showed the easiest way, that gave them the idea of the over under loop to gain the elevation that was needed at this famous location!

    I start the video and the first train with 3 dash 7s runs past and what do I hear? EMD turbo sound! The choice of sound for sound dubbing should have a bit more afterthought. So at least the right sound for the right engine!
