Dan Marino refused to listen to Jimmy Johnson and wouldn’t do as Johnson asked to throw less. Johnson finally gave up and retired for good. Johnson had turned the Hurricanes and Cowboys into champions and would have done the same at Miami if Marino would have bought into the team concept and listened to Johnson. Johnson is on record saying he quit because Marino wouldn’t buy into more of a team concept. I’m a 50 yr fan of Miami and now regret them drafting Marino. Now the guy is hanging around wanting to get a ring just like a father trying to get his glory through his son’s accomplishments.

@@ag358 Their defense was always in the top 5 or 6 in the AFC. And they didn’t have a run game because Marino was a stat hog and they didn’t implement a run game. One thing to think about with the Dolphins defense. They spent a lot of time on the field. When teams score fast(which is a good thing) or has 3 and out it puts the defense right back on the field. I have been a Dolphins fan since the early 70s and I bought into the greatness of Marino and Shula but as the years went by I started to see they weren’t that great. Shula won over 300 games….he beat Buffalo 20 straight times in the 70s. He was in a division with bad Jets teams…Patriots teams….Shula won his games against garbage teams. He had a losing SB record including getting blown out by Dallas, SF, and losing to the Jets in SBIII as an 18 point favorite. And he couldn’t even implement a running game. I regret the Dolphins drafting Marino

Some great years before Dan got to Miami, but I mean this when I say that, as a fan, I wouldn't trade the Marino years for anything on this planet. You know that they brought Jimmy Johnson in and Marino wouldn’t change his game like Johnson wanted him too. But Marino was concerned about his stats and wouldn’t buy in. Johnson has said that he quit because of Marino. Johnson realized that even as big as Johnson was in Miami that Marino was a legend to some people and Johnson didn’t want that battle so he retired for good. I loved Marino at first but Dan Marino held the Dolphins back when Johnson coached them. It’s hard to love one player when he was the cause of them not getting to the next step. Now Marino is holding on to the Dolphins like a dad who never won anything coaching his son to get his glory that way. I’ve been a Dolphin fan for 50 years and Ibwish they never got Marino

As much as I love Mike McDaniel as a coach for the Dolphins, I doubt that Tua would use the word "tough" to describe him. Shula was a task master and Marino knew it. His main goal was to please Don Shula. In today's NFL, Marino would decimate the league with his talent. These "soft" rules provided to offenses would make Marino an even greater quarterback. Can you imagine defenses not being able to touch Dan for fear of drawing flags for late hits? Mahomes is a good quarterback, but Dan was great! Fearless, smug and... supremely talented. That's why he will always be the GOAT in my mind.

MFR. HoF Consideration. 1984, in those seasons, 11 and 12 scores were basically the normal pinnacles of the receiving touchdown statistic. Clayton caught 18 touchdowns that season, setting an NFL record. Clayton’s line reads as 582 receptions, 8,974 yards (15.4 yards per catch) and 84 touchdowns. Duper recorded 511 receptions, 8,869 yards (17.4 yards per catch) and 59 touchdowns. Yet, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a duo in Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, both in Canton. In Oakland at a similar time, Fred Biletnikoff and Cliff Branch were a fearsome pair for the Raiders. Biletnikoff was enshrined in 1988, and, just this past year, Branch was inducted posthumously. So, what´s the beef with Clayton and Duper?

Here’s my Dan Marino story. I went to a home game late in Dan’s career and had a seat in the end zone. It was inside two minutes, Fins were behind by 4 or 5 points, and the offense was huddled at about the 10. I stood up and yelled “Let’s go!.” Dan turned around and responded, “Shut up!” I realized then he worked like a surgeon on the field and wanted quiet to do his job. Ultimately we won the game as he took us down the field and put 7 more on the score board.

When I was a little boy 30 years ago and was just becoming "lucid" and forming my memories I remember sitting with my dad on the couch and he was watching Sportscenter. The Dolphins logo popped up on something and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I asked him who they were and what sport they played. From that point on it was and has always been the Fins for me. I am thankful to be able to see the backstretch of Dan's career and vividly remember watching him carve up the Broncos defense in 1998 on Monday Night Football. This season isn't over yet but I can not even begin to form into writing just how much this season has meant to me. 20 years of horrible seasons, mediocrity, and irrelevancy. I have been moved to tears of joy more than once this year and then when Dan says "they have a chance, they have a real chance" I just lost it. I really think this year means so much to so many of us just to be in true contention.

My co-worker, who was a Cowboy fan, used to call him a "lovable loser". I hated that as I am a die hard Dolphin fan and Marino was my favorite player of all time. I had the privilege to watch him play several times at the RCA dome in Indianapolis when the colts where in their division. I was there the day Marino and the Dolphins lit up the colts and Payton Manning in Manning's very first NFL start. He is a class act and a classy guy. Tua threw a 60 yard TD and if you watch Hard Knocks the entire time is behind Tua

Dan Marino was great, in his time... but Tua will be the Dolphins greatest QB with all he will accomplish.

Tua is a phenomenal QB, but no one will eclipse Dan Marino as being the greatest.

If Marino was playing today he'd throw for 6k, with the rules the way they are. I've been a fan since 1983 and old enough to have watched his entire career and it was a privilege. Dan Marino's Fake Spike not only won that game but ruined the entire Jets season. The coaches got fired and the team was never the same for decades. Even back then we all knew we were watching something special.

I feel like JJ held Marino back in his remaining years. Marino did well, but there was definite sabotage going on all around him during that Jacksonville/Miami playoff game. It’s not how you treat one of the best.
