According to a recent video interview with a Ukrainian soldier who was recently conscripted, Ukraine no longer has any contract soldiers left. They have all been killed or wounded. Ukraine is now relying completely on conscripts. Often times they have a few days or weeks training and are sent to the front with AK-47s or even WW1 era Maxim machine guns to go up against tanks, artillery, jets, missiles, armored vehicles, etc. Ukrainian soldiers constantly complain about being abandoned by the senior staff. They complain about being thrown into what they call "the meat grinder" Of course don't expect to hear about this on BBC.

With that said, a rule of thumb is that for every dead soldier there are 3 wounded. so that amounts to 1000 Ukrainians out of action per day. Ukraine probably also just got 1-3k of their soldiers encircled at the hirske-zolotoye area. Russian forces have been confirmed to have entered the suburbs of vovchoiarivka. The 57th brigade of Ukrainian armed forces hastily retreated from the myrna dolina area which made their frontlines collapse in the area and resulted in the rapid siezure of Rai oleksandrivka. Russian forces captured Loskutivka and Rai-Oleksandrivka village at Sieverodonetsk direction. - General Staff of Armed Forces of Ukraine says in the morning report. Russian sources have also claimed to have entered the suburbs of Vovchoiarivka which is right on the ass of the LIsichansk army group of Ukraine. Vovchoiarivka may fall quickly into Russian hands due to the earlier collapse of Ukrainian forces in the region and Vovchoiarivka not having well trained garrisons. I still havent recieved any further reports on Vovchoiarivka. It may aswell be Russian by the time I speak. If the Russian forces arent stopped from advancing a few km outside of Vovchoiarivka then the Ukrainian High Command may aswell just cross out the Lisichansk Army group. Vovchoiarivka has a few hills surrounding it which if captured will allow Russian forces to put the Ukrainian forces in tactical encirclement.

I find it heartbreaking, having lived through the 2nd World war when I was a child. I realised what was going as my father was in RAF SERVED in Europe then Burma. Thank God he survived.

Given that these breakaway movements never existed prior to 2014, and these "militants" didn't appear until the Russian "Little Green Men" started crossing the border... The PzH2000 systems have arrived in Ukraine. Training for Marder anti-air tanks has started. It's still a drop in the ocean. Unfortunately, we here in Germany have reduced our military to the bare minimum in the last few decades, so there's not much to give away. I hope we can get some of the older stuff delivered that's still sitting at various weapons manufacturers. But none of that has been maintained, so it's going to be some time.

Howitzers are accurate. Let's say they hit the targets 50% of the time and they shoot 100 rounds per day. That's still 350 targets hit per day. A BTG has 50 armored vehicles.

The Ukrainians greeted the Germans, the Nazis, in WWII because they were looking for a better deal than they got from the Russians, Stalin, during the famine of 1932-33. The Cossacks fought for the Nazis in Yugoslavia and Italy. They surrendered to the British and were turned by them over to Stalin’s tender mercies. ..but, the Azov Regiment is bad news, anyway.

With that many casualties the separatists are effectively out of the fight for the next few months at minimum. From what I read, most military units are pretty much no longer combat effective at 20-30% casualties. Assuming this is true (and it's a big if), the Putinites may no longer be able to rely on them to soak up losses, and the Putinites themselves are already having enough problems as it is.

I'm sorry to be that guy, but I just love the BBC too much to ignore some of the bad reporting. First, the title is misleading. Separatists in Ukraine consist of the DNR and the LNR. So if the DNR has lost half of its fighting force, then that's 1/4 of the overall separatist force. Second, DNR forces are not actively engaged in Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. That's where the LNR militia is bearing the brunt of the action, because those two cities are on the territory of Lugansk oblast. DNR has its own fights around Svetlodarsk, Soledar and Bakhmut, as well as to the north, on the Izyum/Sloviansk front, which are all part of the Donetsk oblast. And third, of course they are dying in Donbas. That's where they fight exclusively. There are no DNR/LNR forces in Zaporozhye and Kherson. Still think the BBC is the pinnacle of journalism, but this was just a bit shallow for my taste.

The figures are similar across both republics so saying half is close as it's a bit below half in one and a bit above in the other.

Fancy that: a snippet of news from the largest war in Europe since WW2! And this while the BBC is fighting its own heroic battle against the advanced stages of IAD (Infantile Attention-span Disorder). Hats of to the heroes on its editorial board, who-despite the absence of their own spines-struggle to salvage what they can from the steady flow of news from reporters who put their lives on the line every single day.

For those wondering, The D/LPR forces are currently using around a 2% recruitment of manpower and have extended conscription ages to 65 years old, meaning anyone between 18-65 can be conscripted to fight. Bear in mind, these are the troops often going into battle with Mosin Nagant Bolt action rifles and 1960's kit. They are also the forces making up the bulk of Russia's ground infantry, as Russia has not formally declared a war, so its military is only operating at 60-70% capacity as a peacetime force. Meaning most of the Russian army units are running at a reduced manpower of an average 700/1000 men. I don't think we'll see the end of this conflict for some time to come, but it is beginning to hurt Russia.

@Kerberos Simple mathematics. They've lost 35,000 men killed so far. Not including wounded, That's 10% of Russia's active armed forces, including its naval and air power. They've deployed roughly 100,000 troops to the fight. That's 35% of their total force at a minimum That's been knocked out. There's been tonnes of videos of Russian armour and IFV's carrying no men. You never send an IFV in without infantry support unless you don't have the infantry to back it up. Unless Russia formally declares a war, the pool of men they can call up for service will shrink. As it sits, the LPR and DPR are basically recruiting people up to the age of 65 and those with medical disabilities that would normally disqualify you from service.

@Kerberos it's not hard to figure. Trains of dead body's, over a thousand tanks destroyed with proof of most, I have friends that are fighting for Ukraine and friends living in Russia. Even my Russian friends know the government figures are full of sh*t. Defending you'd lose on average 20-30 soldiers a day, Attacking its easily 100-150. Russia was trying to advance for at least 90 days. You'd be looking at a very safe estimate of Known casualties of 15,000. On average of that, you're looking at x2.5 wounded. Is it to say Ukraine isn't suffering the same? Of course they are. But Ukraine can mobilise their entire country for defence. Russia can't mobilise without coming out and saying their special military failure was an invasion.

Yes it's, compared to USA cake warriors who fought with the Afghans for 20 years and fled in disgrace. Ukraine has one of the best European military and all world sending them money and weapons. It's around 100k Russian troops + 50k LNR-DPR forces against 600k regular Ukrainian army and around 1million territorial defense forces.

It is only in Western propaganda that this is a difficult war for Russia. But in reality, Russia wins. Russia uses only 2% of its army for this war. The sanctions have not done Russia any harm. Russia is in no hurry, because the goal is to completely disarm the NATO countries. Western idiots rejoice and send more and more of their weapons to Ukraine while remaining completely unarmed, this is exactly what Russia wants.

If they were real separatists, they would have held referenda, such as was held in Crimea. Note that in Crimea there is no war. Why? Because Crimea was majoritarian ethnic Russian. Donetsk oblast is only 38% ethnic Russian, and Lugansk oblast is only 39% ethnic Russian. They did not hold referenda, because they knew that they would lose.

I feel very sad for all the families losing their loved ones in this war. But the good thing is that not a single company of the free world will do business in Russia again for at least the next 100-150 years and also that NATO is now stronger than ever.

Chinese, indian, African countries that have been helped by Russia, disstabilized nations (caused by NATO members) might still do business in Russia after the war. I don't support war but we all know USA killed a million people in Iraq for no JUST reason.

A dozen high-tech Artillery pieces won't make that much of a difference.

While I think that it's great that Germany is sending artillery to Ukraine, it just seems a bit unrealistic to me to suggest that these few weapons will counterbalance Russian artillery superiority. Particularly since these weapons will become prime targets for Russian air strikes.

These are one of the most advanced artillery systems in the world. If they keep their range and make proper use of the shoot'n scoot principle, then the only real threat would be aircraft that actively hunt for them, which would be very vulnerable for anti air weaponry.

With luck the rest of the Dombas traitors will get the same treatment soon. And it's not just the German artillery arriving in Ukraine, these new weapons systems can sit out of Russian artillery range hitting target's with pin point accuracy and protected from air strikes by a swarm of javelins stugnas starstreaks and other systems. It should be a game changer.

These artillery pieces are still vulnerable to airstrikes and longer range MRLS that the Russians have. I'd position them with air defenses if I were the Ukrainians or a really good "shoot and scoot" system.

No it's more a question of time. When someone starts out in trench warfare there's a sort of honeymoon period and they feel all enthusiastic about it. But after a few years it just becomes dull routine and loses its original charm. The people of Donbass are somewhat blasé about the war now. But it's still new and exciting for the Ukrainians. Give them a few years of artillery barrages and they'll lose some of that enthusiasm.
