Vortigaunts are the only species I regret killing in the first Half-Life after seeing how social and friendly they are in Half-Life 2.

In HL2 you can find a 'singing' vortigaunt where he explains vortigaunts are coterminous. So they can see past and future as if its the present.

The vortessense is the most powerful energy in half life universe, thats why G-man cant fight it, also thats why he want to control it and thats why the vortigaunts try to keep him away from Freeman, cause he can use him to gain the power of vortessense.

Oh yeah! I remember from Half-Life: Alyx that G-Man’s prison (the Vault) that it was powered by green electricity. Vortigaunts also produce the green lightning.

I think after nihilanth death they all were killed by combines. Last of them probably died during the portal storms, they were between two enemies - humans and combines and were just wiped out.

@@alexeyburenkov2292 that seems to fall in line with what the gman means when he talks about gordon’s “personal holocaust”. Also lore tells that the species under the nihilant were on the run from the combine already and tried to escape to earth which turned out to be essentially a one way street, anything of significance was probably wiped out (ie the alien grunts and those flying searays with lasers) other less controlable species like headcrabs which couldve most likely evade the combine more easily due to their “plague like behaviour” (also allowing zombies to still be around) and then finally there is alot of agressive flora left that also by lore takes a long time to dissapear, half life alyx shows the combine putting in quite a bit of effort to contain the spread of headcrabs and possibly the plants aswell... ( which may be why we see way less alien vegetation in hl2 which takes place 6 years later) Essentially the combines has shows that it uses what it can for its own gain, (and is especially good at integrating tech and species into their ranks) hostile supersoldiers would probably be quite the hastle to keep around as opposed to relatively feeble humans (who make excellent slaves once their mind and reproductive organs are stripped out...)

The grunts were created in the Xen factories, I assume that once the Combine found them, they wiped them out.

@@pikachufrankie the combine is more likely to have integrated everything that was of use, after which they got rid of the rest. The gunships we see in half life 2 for example are half combine half other species

Well, they see the past and future as if it was the present- their brains don't view basic timelines as humans do. G-Man definitely isn't a good guy if the vortigaunts rebel against him, instead of attempting to make peace.

Best race along with Bullsquids. There's ways to get them "friendly" or at least "neutral" to the player in Half-Life 1, but it might just be a case of the AI giving up or something. Don't think they're more powerful than the Gman, at least not alone. Combined perhaps.

In the egg facility, they leave you alone until the Alien Controllers show up (unless you attack them), it was clear this behavior is intentional, not AI glitch.

Never realized there was such a deep backstory for the creatures of this world. I love this series.

I feel a strong bond with the Vorts after playing HL2Ep2.

One thing I love about the vorts is how they understand English. These are all just theories but vortigaunts seem to have a developing understanding of English, they use “the” before any name because people always refer to them as “The Vortigaunts” and also they use Ow as more of an explanation then an exclamation. This is very interesting and truly conveys a creature learning to speak and communicate in a different language

I think the middle arm is used to better control and detect vortessense. Since in Half-life Alyx. The vort you save’s arm reacts to vortessense and surprises the vort.

Maybe their posture is because of Earths Gravity and because of technical and time constraints Hl:1 vorts models did not change in xen to reflect this

They have the same body posture on Xen. Also, if y'mince one of them, y'notice they have no bones at all...only organs. I'd say their body structure is like that as they're boneless.

I actually noticed very early in da game how intelligent they are, and they must be one of the ruling castes of Xen.

I love vortigaunts. Funky little electric aliens. I fucking love them.

I once tried to play half life without killing a Vort because I thought they were “cool”, I ended up reloading the same save 25 times (Edit: I didn’t use glitches or push them aside or something, it was just full on running past like a group of virus and pray I don’t die)

My favorite part of HL Alyx so far was meeting the Vortigaunt. I wish I could hang out with him more since he was cut off from the Vortessense

Vorts are probably bad for combat, since they are able to be cut off from vortessense and become unable to use their powers.
