I first found out about Half Life/Portal when I was playing Subnautica as an 11 year-old, and my dad recognized some similarities between the Cave Crawlers, and some old crabs in a distant game he used to play. He dug it up out of his steam account and I first booted up Half Life in the back of a friend's car while we were driving home, just to fill time. I had no idea what awaited me.

i'm an extremely new half life fan and upon finishing hl2ep2 i immediatly looked into those projects. it gave me a nervous laughter learning about them because of the insane scope these projects were aiming for. i think it's a shame those projects try to "modernise" half life with new engines and new models when, personally, something akin to the latest games would be just perfect. sounds like it'd save a lot of time to make episode 3 just a mod of hl2

  • @PebsBeans

HL:A was the perfect modernisation of HL imo, it feels new without losing the essence of what made HL2 special, unlike stuff like Project Borealis that desperately tries to feel like a modern title with all the new post-HL conventions

Half Life 2 was such a big game for me while growing up. I stumbled upon a playthrough from a KZreadr I was a big fan of. It just blew my mind as a kid, I was hooked. It lead to me finding out about source games in general. I loved the story and followed it closely I was so excited for episode 3 at the time, I waited and waited. I was still in elementary school I believe at the time, I’m almost 23 now. After awhile my hype went away, I still loved the franchise just moved on. I kept tabs on projects that wanted to make the big 3, either it turned out they weren’t good or just never got finished. Then Alyx came along, I was excited but then found out it was only VR and I was just sad. After so many years of waiting and it’s something I can’t even play. At the time I didn’t have a pc anymore so I guess regardless I couldn’t play it, I didn’t get another till recently but it was just the whole situation that bothered me. Just all that time of just nothing from valve and then boom it a new Half Life game but it’s VR. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they’ve done something just sad I can’t experience it. Sad also to think there are some people who were excited to see episode 3 that aren’t with us today to see the story continued, that’s something that’s always stuck with me.

Well, there is been some good news regarding half life 3 recently. There's new half life 3 fan game in the works called Infinite Finality made by a team called team hyperborea. Unlike project borealis and Boreal Alyph they just rely on the basics of the source engine, and don't over scope it or use a completely different game engine. What they've shown looks pretty promising. They've in fact just released a new update on their modb page last week. They also upload pretty frequently on their KZread channel. Although it's mostly just music, but they have a short gameplay trailer uploaded on their channel. Should this mod suffer the same fate as project borealis and Boreal Alyph is uncertain, but the time I'm writing this it's still in developed.

Idk if you've joined the PB discord, but the devs have been more active with other fans, answering occasional questions and stuff. They also posted a teaser on twitter on their 5th anniversary. Call me crazy, but the wind physics update video was kind of a massive red flag. As a developer myself, this is a really common sign of losing focus on the core goals and goofing off making things you don't really need because its more fun to make. Making games is insanely hard. A fan made game is a whole lot harder than a fan mod that heavily leans on a game's assets and code. I just don't see the team having enough focus and discipline to actually get this out the door in a good state.

Really good point. I've seen too many community projects fail. Probably like 95% of them, and being part of one myself. It is incredibly easy entering and starting developing something for fun. However following through with it and finishing the project... eh... it's hard to do it driven purely out of passion. Because passion tends to run out at some point... unfortunately.

I've been super invested in half-life a long time. I still need to play episodes 1 and 2. As for Borealis, I get why they wouldn't but a little message "we're alive"! would be nice. KAFF is gone I believe, and Valve isn't gonna make a third game anytime soon I don't think. It's just sad because Half-life is such a cool world. It's unique in the way few other sci-fi franchises are.

It’s amazing just how little work gets done on these projects that have YEARS sunk into them. I really hope that something does come from this, but the chances are very very low. Luckily the beta mods like Raising the Bar Redux and Dark Interval actually have something that’s playable, and will make some progress. In the comments of one of those portfolio videos this guy was showing off some maps from Boreal Alyph I asked him if there were any assets/maps to leak, and the guy said that basically nothing happened. They were too busy focusing on cool tech features like mass for different objects, and other stuff like that. They also kept changing the story, which is utterly bizarre because it was literally set in stone by Epistle 3. All they had to do was translate that into gameplay (If you’re going to make changes to the story put the characters from Hunt Down the Freeman into the game because that would be hilarious. Honestly if it were up to me I’d canonize that game, and retcon Brien to be replaced by Keemstar). If you haven’t made any maps, designed the gameplay, or actually planned out the story then you haven’t actually worked on a game. All you did was waste countless ours on a project that went nowhere. I think the absolute best Tyler Mcvicker video without a shadow of a doubt was when he did that interview with the lead dev of Fallout Frontier. It’s amazing just how incompetent he was in that video. He read every question and I mean EVERY question. Even ones that were very obviously troll comments. He read out a comment about how the team removed a monument to the USS Liberty (wasn’t in the mod), and the JQ quest line with merchants; which resulted in Tyler apologizing for being “anti-semantic” (how he didn’t catch any of that is beyond me). He’d also read a bunch of Sneedclave posts (some of the best ones), and even screamed out one of the chats because it was in all caps. All he did was unintentionally expose the team as a bunch of incompetent sickos (Zu skunk was just the scapegoat. He didn’t do all the messed up stuff with the story. He just had a very MINOR role on the project). The lead guy is either beyond incompetent and had no idea what happened on a 7 year project, or he’s a malicious liar who just wants to save his own skin. A similar story happened with the cancelled Opposing Force 2 mod. When I was a kid and first discovered that mod I was hyped and was really looking forward to seeing it released. Back then I was a dumb kid who couldn’t tell the difference between official and fan made content (I also thought that Point of View was like a free dlc or something that explained the Xen forces. I also thought the Aether mod was a part of Minecraft before it was removed by Notch). I forgot about it and years later I learned it was cancelled. Then I saw they released the assets, and almost nothing got done. There were a few maps that ranged in quality, most of the weapons/enemies were just reskins of already existing stuff, and so many of the cool renders shown on the Moddb page weren’t present. You can probably imagine my disappointment. There’s this one guy called UndyingNephalim who was roped into a similar situation. He and a bunch of other people were convinced to join this Star Fox fan game called Project Kursed. Which was supposed to be a sequel to Star Fox Command where you’re playing as Krystal when she becomes a bounty hunter. For the story she was supposed to learn about her past, the Krazoa, and other stuff like that. The project fell apart because the story kept rapidly changing, almost body on the team knew how to do anything, the people who were actually talented were held back by the idiots, the lead guy had the ego and self awareness of Chris Chan and his only skills were convincing people his trash fire would be a success and finding people, and the big one is it was run by furries. Luckily now Neph works on this cool Zelda rts called Hyrule Conquest, which is a mod for 0ad (open source game so it’s 100% free). As well as a Star Fox game called Star Fox Event Horizon. The guy is really talented, and has been at it for a long time. Luckily Nintendo hasn’t stomped them for whatever reason. Great video! You summed up a lot of my thoughts in regards to fan projects. They get you hyped, and end up falling apart.
