I want a Houndeye for a pet, I'd built it a Xen looking area to sleep in...although you couldn't let it get too excited or it would blow the side of your house down.

That's a shame. I actually don't kill non-aggressive monsters in video games, generally. But if the first one of a certain thing I see attacks me, I will usually assume all future things of that type are aggressive. Like the hollows at New Londo Ruins or the Altar of Sunlight in Dark Souls - I never harm those guys because they don't cause trouble. I would've liked to see houndeyes acting like regular animals, it would've added a lot of atmosphere.

  • @OldCouches

Yeah but that also removes NPC variety. If you had to kill everything in the game including scientists, guards, cockroaches, and even alien air crafts, then it would lose the story and the game wouldn't be the same now would it?

half life in my opinion was the most remarkable and outstanding first person shooter i have ever played, it had good level design, amazing AI at the time, a great story, dark ambient atmosphere, you felt alone and in terror in this game. This game was also quite challenging at times, and had a great ending that is quite the pay out for all the hard work. The boss fight is just so strange. This and and quake original are the most incredible pieces of art i had ever had the privilege to play. i got half life for my 9th birthday and me and my buddies stayed up all night playing it and beat it at 6 in the morning. I did the same thing with quake original on my 7th birthday. Great times and i feel blessed (as cheesey as that sounds) to be born in the generation of the first person shooter and got to experience shooters when they were at their prime at an old enough age.

never thought a chunk of code could be so cute so much detail went into the ai, and most of the time the consumer wouldn't really notice since the creature is hostile towards the player this proves that older video game developers had no expectations of selling so much as they do now. now it's just what appeals to the average male, and it works. it just sells if you invest in something that doesn't benefit you materialistically, you start to put a certain kind of effort that it becomes an extension of you, an expression, aka art. video games were art back then

Haha literally any person who is not someone who views games as fun entertainment because their friends seem to be having fun or someone who thinks theyre screen cancer meant to brainwash teenagers knows that the gaming industry is utter SHIT. point to a person who unironically cheers at e3 when triple a titles are presented with such hype -- and dont get me wrong, theyre probably smart individuals, but if you play modern triple a's and view the them as the ONLY interactive video entertainment worth playing and anything else is just definitely NOT and funny to see someone play you can't hold back and start criticizing -- you don't and are not somehow built to inquire and see the bigger picture and seek fulfillment from this kind of entertainment... people who just want to have fun and play triple a titles casually are perfectly fine and can't really be criticized too much -- theyre the same as the people playing half-life when it came out. im talking about the people who subscribe to that shit a way too hard, you know? not relevant but i find myself playing games like gothic, arx fatalis when i want to have fun playing video games. and without really aspiring to play old games because it makes you feel superior sorry for the long rant xoxo i needed to edit some parts after i re-read the thing lol i wrote it half asleep sorry

Blood is a topic that will be covered in a different, larger video. This video was not planned until I discovered yesterday exactly what the "machinery" and "blinking light" code meant while doing research for my initial video idea. And just to clarify, these "hint types" are defined in the maps by the author. They're technically unused in all official levels, but the behavior is still fully coded and functional.

There's also the Houndeye watching TV in the Black Mesa remake, which I'm guessing is a reference to this? I wish humans and Vorts figured out a way to tame these guys and made them pets in HL2.

Such a small thing but where have these kinds of things gone in recent games? I don't care if it's shit people might not see adding in these small details like feeding meat to the bullsquid in the freezer which really seems like a waste of time when you could just blast it but the fact that it's there is just too damn awesome for words. Also I love you Marphy, plain and simple you make some of the most interesting videos ever.

Yes! You can see all of those animations in game. If you die and you just keep laying there, you see the monsters and about EVERY A.I. in this game continue doing their thing, so yes, you can see all of this.... newbies.. you still gotta play that game for 10 more years to find all other stuff out they put into this masterwork!

I noticed in the first part of the video that among the things Houndeyes will inspect include blood from both species. Does that mean when idle, Houndeyes will move from wherever they are to where there is blood spatter? Or do they need to be very close to one of the objects defined in sHoundHints in order to inspect it?
