Half-Life: Alyx - Locomotion Deep Dive

Ойындар

The Half-Life: Alyx team talks player locomotion in a behind-the-scenes deep dive. Valve developers Jason Mitchell, Luke Nalker, Greg Coomer, and Roland Shaw share some of our early prototypes, and walk through user interface, audio, and player movement discoveries that led to the game's final designs.
Half-Life: Alyx is now available on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/54...

Hough White Valve used Dynamic Shadow and lighting in their every games since Portal 2, even Half-Life 2 has dynamic flashlight shadow since 2004. They’re also make the new lighting system of Source engine 2 for Half-Life Alyx that you can see the shadow from the game will blurring when the objects near or far from it, just like how shadow in real life work. And it’s called “Source engine”, not “Steam engine” btw. The reason why you never see any open world games from Valve that because they don’t like to made Open world games, with all of boring shit open world games today, i’m glad that they don’t even give a fuck about them and stay with story driven games, btw Source engine 2 already support level streaming system since 2014, so you can even created an Open World game with even bigger than Rdr2 with it. You don’t play any of Valve games since 2004 don’t you?

The difference between an old CRT display, and a new OLED or LCD panel Edit: Since I need to explain. We were told not to sit too close to TVs as a kid because the old CRT screens were actually harmful. They leak small amounts of radiation since it works by firing rays at the viewer to make pixels glow. Modern flat screens don't use technology like this, and when you're in VR, the lenses focus the screens as if they're anywhere from 6' to infinity away from you. You're more susceptible to just eye strain from light in VR compared to other damage fears of older technology

Despite all the comments comparing CRT's to LCD and OLED displays(which is true btw), it actually does have negative effects on younger people whose eyes that have not yet fully developed. Technically this should not be a problem since it is rated M 18+ and only people over 18 should be playing this game but it would be naive to say that the M rating stops people who have underdeveloped eye vision from playing VR games. It's not fully researched and understood by scientists, but as of now, as long as your eyes have fully matured, you should be safe from any severe eye damage.

I love that player height is an aspect of this. As a 2 meter tall guy, many VR experiences feel 'off' - because it's built for smaller people. It's fairly uncanny and can make the scale of things become absurd, and almost comical at times - even though the game is intended to be serious.

Alyx was my first VR game. It felt so natural and I really liked the controls, however I noticed what you noticed almost right away. I found myself using a combination of continuous motion and teleport to "run." I thought it was kind of weird that there was no run or faster continuous motion. However after finishing Alyx and moving onto Boneworks, boy let me tell you, the run option in Boneworks makes my stomach turn. So I now appreciate my movement speed in Alyx.

I played through continuous motion on my first run of the game then shift teleport on my second. Surprisingly I actually found my second run (the shift teleport run) to be alot more enjoyable and immersive in a spacious room scale setting. I actually found myself moving alot more physically in real life because I'd actually make the small movements irl such as side stepping or approaching objects, rather than simply adjusting my ingame position constantly with a joystick like a traditional FPS.

Guys. we can't forget that maybe, they don't want to, not out of disrespect, but more respect, I imagine so many people at Valve knew Rick, and maybe they don't want to talk about him, it's a sad, depressing thought that you lost someone to something they couldn't control one bit, I imagine even Gabe is having a hard time getting over this, so don't, stop trying to make them do what we want, let them, Valve, humans like you and I, do what they believe is their best idea, if they make a video to honor Rick, then they will, if they don't, then it was to hard to handle and it's early for that I think, let some time pass, I can't imagine they don't care, that would be ridiculous, but remember that it's always hard to talk about losing someone, so let them take their time, if it never happens, then it doesn't, And if it does, it does.

There are some great open-world games out there, but that quote is objectively false. I was never a big fan of open-world games, until I got into The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Assassins Creed, Borderlands, etc. Games like those are prominent in the open-world genre. Although those games are great, there are a lot of other amazing games out there, that have a more direct way of storytelling, such as Doom and Half-life. Personally though, the open-world genre is just another river flowing into a sea of games.

The solid Blink Teleporting system in this game saved me from getting dizzy and allowed me to play for much longer than normal. The only thing that really stopped me was fatigue which is something I never experienced in VR...usually I feel dizzy before I get there. Great job on the whole game. Half Life Alyx is my favorite title I've played in the last several years!
