    Also she goes from a nitpicking backseat gamer with pretty much no understanding of games and what makes them great, to a competent and valuable game reviewer on her own right. The later Girlfriend Reviews are not just good fun, but they also count as legitimate reviews, if a little brief. Shelby's insights into what makes a good game are really great, considering that her own gaming career is fairly short.

    I let my mom try this as her first VR experience, one of the first things I told her before she put the headset on was to remember that nothing she's going to see is real and you can't lean on anything, she laughed like I was joking because it's so obvious, then a few minutes later she tried leaning on a wall and fell over.

    Well, we want to play the games not to pretend to be in one... that kind of sentiment gets old fast, the reason why valve released this game as VR only is because this is first a VR experience and secondly a game, everything is too slow paced in here, enemies are dumb and easy in comparison to normal half life games

    @@TheWarKeeper Speak for yourself. Immersion is a pretty big deal to a lot of people, and in that regard VR can't be beat. I'd argue that the gameplay looks like that, but, feels much more daunting when you're playing. It certainly is never as hard as Half Life 1 or 2, but it never really claims to be. It still manages to create a novel gameplay experience imo.

  • @TheWarKeeper

    @TheWarKeeper

    @@Scorch052 To be fair I get it where you come from with the immersion argument, but consider this: If we can immerse ourselves into a story completely by reading a book, we certainly can by playing a game on a monitor too! Humans are pretty good at pretending to be in somewhere or in someone elses shoes, so my argument would be, even if VR adds an extra layer on top of that immersion, for me its not worth it. For me im not feeling VR, at least not yet, not even in this game, you sacrifice too much for the sake of having a screen strapped to your eyes, the entire game of HLAlyx i couldnt help feel this was a VR experience first and a game second. But eh, each to their own opinion i guess.

    @@khimaros How did you play it? With teleportation or smooth locomotion? Can't speak about the PSVR (never tried it) but with my Rift it was an adaption process over time as I've always been sensitive to motion sickness IRL. In the beginning I could only play with teleportation and would still start getting slightly nauseous after about an hour's play, but that was gone after a couple of weeks of frequent play. After 3-4 months I could start playing racing games (generally very predictable smooth movement) and after a year I could start using smooth locomotion in general (played through Subnautica in 90+ hours). I've seen many VR users report very similar experiences but of course with variation. Some adapt quickly (within weeks/months) and others (like me) are more slow.

    I have a short tale to tell. I graduated in aeronautical science in 2002 and got my pilots license in that same year. I flown almost 200 hrs until the crisis of 2008 came and crashed hard on my country (Brazil) ending my flying days. Since then I've work on many different things but never forgot the thrill of flying. Moved to Germany a couple of years ago, and got a headset just last year. The first time I got in to that cockpit with my VR HMD, I've got to confess. I cried. The feeling of flying again was the best thing that ever happened to me in a very very long time! So, yeah, I know exactly what you and your BF are talking about experiencing to know, and the implications of this technology going in to the future. P.S.: Love what you guys do! Keep then coming!

    Your comedy writing on the Half-Life Alyx review was top-notch! And the VR fail clips were a nice touch. And thank you for the honest take on the VR industry. This is the exact reason why I want to wait on this game until I have a VR headset. A walkthrough sounds tempting, but nothing beats playing one of best games Valves released in years. Plus we'll probably get more in the next few years. So for now, stay safe and thanks for a good time in Unreality. Keep up the great work Shelby and Matt.

    They bought an Index to play Alyx. Also, you need a serious PC to play Alyx properly, even with a Rift S (or Quest with link and mods) you'll be spending well over a thousand to stably play at medium to high settings (I spent 3 thousand cause laptop). Been VR'ing for over a year and frame dips plus head rotation in a shooter with full spacial movement equals incredibly nausea and cold sweats.
