Half Dome cables - Yosemite National Park - descent - June 3, 2013

This is Gabe and I descending from the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park on June 3, 2103 via the cables route.
As you can see it takes about 20 minutes to descend the cables. This hike requires a permit and on the date we descended, NPS was issuing 300 permits per day. I feel this level of access is both fair and safe.
I shot this on my GoProHD2 wearing a head-mount. Sound is somewhat muffled as I left the waterproof backing on from the previous days Merced river raft outing - oops. If you see yourself on the cables please comment. Oh and if you're a german couple who on the second consecutive day of hiking up to sub-dome hoping to score a pair of unused hiking permits and happened to score a pair of unused hiking permits, I hope you had memorable time.

Looks like a fantastic hike, but I am afraid I would have to be hooked onto the line like the one lady was using. Mainly due to not trusting others, it's definitely steep and if anyone lost their grip due to loosing strength in their hands and arms, and they could take out a few people sliding down. Actually, considering the steep incline and crowds I am amazed more people don't die!

This (and the ascending video) are fantastic. This is on my bucket list for sure, and hopefully I'll be doing it next summer. Seems like you need a tad more patience on the descent than you do ascending.

Wow , I love that way you where so careful and caring with others!♥️ I always wanted to do this hike, but since I got a permanent vertigo condition, it’s hard to admit that I will never be able to do it .😓

There should be two cable paths. One for up and one for down. That would take a bit of stress out of it.

I did this in late August '02. No lottery but still about the same number of people. Assuming uphill has the right of way we would jump outside the cable to let them pass and also pass people stopping or going backward, which is slower and more work. Even in that very steep part we were able to lean back and hang on with one hand and keep moving. Not brave or impatient just ignorance and it worked for at least 20 of us cause people in front and behind us were doing the same thing. and the carabiner lady clipping on the way up no less, just imagine how long it took for her to get down

The more years this has the smoother it will get. Walking outside is probably easier for this reason.

Thanks for posting the descent. You have to pay attention but it doesn't look as bad as I expected. The worst part seems to be the traffic jams.

I really do believe I would freeze up and freak out and not be able to get back down, does that ever happen and if so what would they be able to do to help someone??

Rangers would get you. But it's best to use your own judgment. Plenty of people make it halfway up, then decide to head back down.

Cool video! What head camera did you use? It's really good quality. Want to get one as going to be going Yosemite as well as other destinations in the South West USA, but need a good quality one. If you could let me know then that would be great :)

Great video! very detail good quality. We did the hike 6/25/13 the weather was not too good but we did it any way. Cloudy and misty but by the time we got to the bottom of the cable the rock was dry enough. The good thing was it was not crowded at all

You need a permit. If you google half dome permits or search the national park service for half dome permits, you'll find all the info you need. I'd post the link but youtube doesn't allow links in comments for obvious reasons.
