Haiti: Will violence end after PM Henry’s resignation? | DW News

Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry has agreed to resign after weeks of increasing gang violence. The announcement follows crisis talks between Caribbean leaders and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Haiti has been described as being at a tipping point, as armed criminal gangs overwhelm the capital.
The gangs have been demanding the prime minister's resignation for weeks - as they unleashed deadly violence on the impoverished country. The chair of the Carribean intergovernmental organisation - Carimcom - declared that more people had been killed in Haiti this year than have been killed in the war in Ukraine.

But, we are educated. Goodness, Haitians were recruited by US, France, Canada, Africa in the 60s specifically to go teach. Don’t think a few gangsters in the street means Haitians aren’t educated. A few Arabs who arrived in the 60s control too many elected officials, behave as serfs to the CORE GROUP and Intl Cmmnty are to blame. Most Haitians don’t foreign impositions, but these serfs enjoy it - that’s the clash. There’s a consensus among Haitians that our main problem is the intelligentsia ( they’re Harvard, Yale, Sorbonne educated folks with PhDs).

In Haiti, the constant threat of earthquakes looms large due to the country's history of devastating seismic events, lack of building codes, and widespread living in vulnerable concrete shanties amidst a growing population. The absence of proper regulations and infrastructure poses a significant risk, compounded by a societal resistance to authority in many areas. This combination creates a dangerous scenario that is challenging to reverse and could lead to catastrophic consequences.

The earthquakes in Haiti have not only caused physical devastation but also left a lasting psychological impact on the community. The trauma from these events has led to high rates of PTSD, anxiety, and depression among the population, exacerbating existing challenges in a country already grappling with violence and political instability. The combination of natural disasters and ongoing violence has created a complex environment where mental health issues are prevalent but often overlooked due to limited resources. To address these intertwined challenges, Haiti needs a comprehensive approach that prioritizes both physical and mental well-being. Providing access to mental health services and psychosocial support is crucial for helping individuals cope with trauma and rebuild their lives. By integrating mental health care into disaster response efforts and ensuring long-term support for those affected by violence and natural disasters, Haiti can work towards healing its community and fostering resilience in the face of adversity. Collaborative efforts between local stakeholders and the international community are essential to address the root causes of violence and provide holistic support for the psychological well-being of the Haitian population.

Security can be returned to Haiti, but not by Haitians and not anytime soon. A massive and robust military presence would have to essentially create a long term governing body lasting three generations. During that time, Haitian children would have be educated on such basics as honest, non-corrupt government, the rule of law, free and fair elections, democracy, and other ingredients of civilization. Such education would take decades. Anything less will not break the Haitian cycle of self-destruction.
