Hail Mary Hawaiian salmon | plus the resident tiger shark and bottom fishing for uku (job fish)

Спорт

Greg's channel / @captgregbrown
My friend and I head out in search of pelagic, but it proves to be pretty difficult day. After catching a ton of bait in the morning, both ballyhoo and opleu I set out my first live bait. After around 30 minutes I realized that a shark or a barracuda had bitten me off above my wire rig without me noticing. I must have been slacking off or something, but after this I decided to do some bottom fishing. My friend Greg had shown up a little later and hooked me up with some squid. After a few drops I managed to catch an uku or job fish and I was happy to avoid a skunking. Not long after the wind started picking up and a tiger shark swam right in front of my kayak. I was mostly unfazed by this from the last trip. After another hour and we made the decision to head in after my friend wade had ended up fighting a a tiger shark for 30 minutes. Before that he had been double hooked up, catching a huge bluefin trevally, and getting sharked on a yellowfin tuna. The wind had picked up even more, but as I headed in through 60ft I decided to do a hail mary with a dead opleu. I hooked it up on wire with a stinger and let it out to 100ft and started pedaling quickly hoping to draw a strike. To my surprise I actually got a bite and managed to stay hooked up. After a short battle I had a nice rainbow runner at the kayak. I was going to do a catch and cook with this one but got lazy and just made some sashimi out of both of the fish. This was filmed quite a while ago before this Covid 19 BS, but I hope you and your families stay safe.

    Are you guys still planning on fishing with the rest in place order? The last time I went out I came back and my Jeep was inside a closed zone. That was a few days ago, I’ve heard that hpd will ticket your vehicle if you park out side of a beach now. Has this happened to any of you? A lot of people are going to need to fish to feed themselves. I hope everyone is doing okay and at the very least has their health.

    You must be in tremendous physical shape to do what you do. Shutting down the beaches and or ocean access is just stupid. People need fresh air and physical activity outdoors to maintain good lung health. It could make the difference between throwing off the virus with minor effects and severe illness.

    Hey Steve, Thanks for watching. I was just in Queenstown 3 weeks ago, I didn't get a chance to do any fishing. We were lucky to get to do the vacation, after we got back this Covid 19 crap was really going off. We can still fish here, but they've closed all of the beach parks and parking. Lots of people are getting parking tickets, but I got away with parking on the side of the highway. I had to move my kayak and all my gear 500ft, but it wasn't that bad.

    I haven’t caught anything on them. I’m not that good at jigging though. Regular bait is almost always better but after the fish shy away from live or even dead bait they will smash jigs. They also seem to hit them more before the fish really start to bite.

  • @FlyingFish_TV

    @FlyingFish_TV

    4 жыл бұрын

    I try to let them swim wherever they want, as long as they are not right on top or on the bottom then I don’t mind. I prefer to drift and so their depth largely depends of the speed of the drift. If I had to guess probably 50-150ft down with 200ft of line out.

    I think the little buddy is eating worm poop. The tiny clay consistency pieces of dirt. He has been doing it for a long time, but it doesn’t seem to bother him. I don’t get an alert that a shark is around. In fact I have the fish beeper turned off. I can see Sam at sharks coming off the bottom as lines that climb consistently to the top on my fish finder. I really only see tiger sharks cruising around on the surface like the last two videos. My current fish finder does not have side scan.
