Bro thanks for posting this, I’m 58 years old and have been living with this for 10 years! When I was young I played every sport I could. when this first developed in my right heel 10 years ago I wasn’t really sure what was happening. So I scheduled a surgery in 2016 that would actually remove my entire tendon shave down the bone and reattach it? At least eight months to a year to be fully recovered! I was informed that they often come back! Two years later the same thing happened to my left heal, yep I now have both heels completely inflamed very swollen and I can barely walk normal. I kind of shuffle after I’ve been sitting for a minute until the tendon relaxes enough to allow me to take a step! Dude enjoy your youth, this shit will definitely put me in a wheelchair if I don’t do anything about it someday. There are new ways to shave down the bone without completely detaching your tendon from your heel. You are a good example of one of those ways. Mine is pretty severe I’ll probably have to be slit vertically in order to grind down the bone spur. Still looking at probably six months of rehabilitation, then I get to do it all over again on my other heel!!!! You hoo! Enjoy your life while you’re young because old age completely sucks at every level except now I have enough money to never work again, not that I really could? Thanks for posting

I have immense pain on right heel especially when driving.. Almost unbearable and I can see somewhat of a bump on my left heel too although no pain currently. I'm getting a 2nd opinion next week and moving out w/ a decision. I'm not going to be crippled at 54 especially when I enjoy weightlifting & exercising so much.. Just go through the recovery and focus on other things.

I had my surgery about a month ago. Mine was much more complicated than yours. I had a spur in addition to the deformity and the spur broke into small pieces and embedded into the tendon. They had to sever my tendon, remove calcifications, then reattach it higher on the heel bone. I started from when I woke from surgery in a boot and I'll be in the boot for another month or two, maybe longer, it depends on how my tendon heals.

Glad you’re healing is going good. Did you have pain like up the Achilles and the bottom of your heel? I have plantars but no heel Spurs and the more research i do i see haglunds as what I’m going to talk to dr about. I tend to walk-in the outside of my foot because i had 3 surgeries on my big toe on that foot in 2020. First, big toe joint replacement, went smoothly then hit my toe in hubbies bow case and broke the toe. 🤦‍♀️ had it fused and then had to have the hardware out because my body was rejecting it. Ugh

I am looking at getting the Haglund's Deformity Surgery and am worried about the rehab: I am not young like you, I am 70 years old now. I was a runner, martial artist and gym rat for all of my adult life. It's funny that this problem didn't show up until I retired from work and my running and my martial arts. All of my physical activity now is low impact: hikes, and the treadmill or elliptical machine at the gym. Thanks for your video. Feeling a bit more reassured.

I had that surgery on 11/2/23. 69 years old. I have been riding bikes since 9 weeks post op. Still limping some today. I have a little pain or hesitation at times when walking. I started playing some pickleball this week. I restrict my lateral movements but at least I'm doing things 14 weeks out. I played some golf this week too. I'm not certain if I should be doing these things. But, doesn't feel too bad. I get some swelling though. @@paulrichardson5309

That is a scary possibility! I would talk to a surgeon to see if they could do it without having to touch your achilles tendon. If they had to do anything to my tendon, I would have been much more hesitant to get the surgery. But, if they don't have to touch it, the recovery is much more manageable. I wish you the best!

@@ryanbudnik4998 thanks. I have torn the achilles tendon so it has to come out. I have a very large growth to saw and file off. They will use a corkscrew to place achilles in the bone and then sew the other end on. I have it May 13th, 2021. Petrified. I am getting a knee block to keep that leg numb for 24 hrs. but will be in my high rise taking care of myself the whole time which will be a challenge not putting wt. on it for 3 weeks.

Thanks Haider! I'm very sorry to hear about your injury. I would recommend going to discuss treatment options with a specialist. They will talk you through the different options and help you choose what's best! My biggest advice is that if you've truly tried to treat it with every natural method possible (rest, physical therapy, medication, etc...) then I would not be afraid to go through with surgery. The tricky thing with your specific injury, is that if doctors have to do any sort of repair to your achilles tendon, your recovery time will be much longer. For me, to remove my deformity, they didn't have to do anything to the achilles, which allowed me to recover much more quickly than if they did. I would really recommend talking to a doctor to see what they would have to do in terms of surgery to help you. I hope this helps, and I hope you are pain free soon!

Thanks J! Sorry to hear that you're suffering from this injury, it really sucks! I have been feeling very good! Before the surgery I questioned whether or not I was making the right decision, but now that it's behind me, I know it was! My recover has been a bit bumpy, probably because I'm very anxious to start running again and jumped back into it too quickly a couple times, but it's been good overall! The main methods of recovery I've been using are Rest, Ice, Stretching, and Massage. I've found that stretching and massaging have been the most helpful for me. The biggest advice I would give while recovering is to work on your range of motion in your operated ankle. I didn't do this early on, and now it's been tough getting it back to normal. I do this by manually moving my foot around with my hand (once i'm warmed up) as well as band stretching and massaging. Obviously, listen to whatever your doctor tells you, and only do what you can without causing pain. I hope the surgery goes well, and that you can get back to running without pain soon!

Hi, I did the surgery exactly a week ago, the pain is huge but the doctor said she expects me to step on the foot .. I do not have a surgical boot which means I have to step directly on the foot .. Sounds illogical to me to step on the foot without the boot and especially when the pain level is High and unbearable .. I would love to know how long after the surgery you felt you could step on the leg without pain or at least with little pain. Thanks, Maya🤞

I just had similar surgery ( my guess ) and I did it in Los Angeles. The doctor initially suggested achillies tendon detachment and attachment as I am having posterior heel spur along with Haglunds. I was scared and decided not to do it . During last one year , I felt that my pain is more on the side of the heel than the back ( spur). So I went back to same doctor and suggested shaving of only that area . He agreed with my plan and I just had surgery yesterday. Let’s see how the recovery goes

Hello! Thank you for your comment! I'm sorry to hear that you have this injury. I did the surgery because the pain was so bad to the point where I was unable to train in the way I wanted to. I would be able to run for maybe a day or two, and then I would have to take a week or more off just to be able to run again. I had pain in my heel for about 5 or 6 months before I ended up having surgery. I would use surgery as your absolute last resort, but I wouldn't avoid it if you need it, especially if they can do the surgery without doing anything to your achilles tendon. I plan on uploading more videos as I continue to recover so that people who are dealing with this injury will have a better idea of what the recovery process is like. Thank you for watching, and I hope your pain goes away soon!

I have haglund's deformity on both heels and one foot also has a heel spur. Did they explain to you how they did the surgery without removing your Achilles? What was their approach at first to do the long cut in back of heel first or how did they know that they can get away with out the removal of Achilles tendon? Was it called pinhole surgery? Or did they tell you a specific name? Thanks advance I'm very nervous. Having nightmares. 😓 Lin B

Did you have this done and how did it go? I'm in the same boat. I've had c-sections and my gallbladder removed in the past, and for some reason this procedure weirds me out far more than these abdominal surgical procedures that I've had. I was just told last week they would need to detach/reattach the achilles and I haven't scheduled it yet because my nerves keep getting in the way. Each day I tell myself I will grow up and schedule it tomorrow lol.
