    I LOVE how Hades says “it’s time for spring” in this version, instead of the original “it’s almost spring”. It may not seem like much of a difference, but the original version, he’s passive to Persephone’s departure - he doesn’t want her to go, he wants to keep her close even though it hurts her, but it’s the terms of their agreement. By saying “it’s time for spring”, though, he actively acknowledges that she must go and pushes her to leave, although it hurts him. He finally puts her needs above his own, and nudges her leave because he knows it’s what she needs. Such a small change, but it has SUCH an impact!

    It's also what he says at the start "The hound that howls inside your head". The mind can play crazy tricks when you're scared. I think Orpheus was scared Eurydice wasn't gonna follow, since she went to Hadestown herself in the first place. And you never know with Hades anyway. It could've still been a trick.

    I haven't seen the full show yet, but it's said that it's the doubt that makes Orpheus turn around, right? Anyway, here's an interesting fact about this myth: my ancient greek teacher said that some scholars think that Orpheus might have turned around to make Eurydice go back to the Underworld. The reason? No one can be the same after an experience like death. She belonged to the Underworld now. If there's any mistake, sorry, but English isn't my first language.

  • @Catonikz

    Hades said he let them "TRY". He knew that Orpheus would look back for her because he is associated with the Fates. If u didn't know, well, the Fates can tell the past, present and future. Hades knew they wouldn't make it out.

  • @Hakajin

    @Hakajin

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's very interesting. As is a frequent motif in Greek/Roman myths, you could interpret the Fates on a more metaphorical level. In this case, that would be that Hades knew (or at least had a strong feeling) that Orpheus would fail, because he sees so much of himself in Orpheus. He knows these patterns because he's older and has been through them. In other words, he knows the Fates' voices, and how easy it is to give into them. The doubt they voice is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  • @giadaferrari8543

    @giadaferrari8543

    I don't agree with this interpretation. Hades might be associated with the fates, but ONLY the Fates actually know the future. Hades would have no sure knowledge of what is going to happen and the Fates do not answer to Hades in ay way, so he would have no way to force them in telling them. He might think Orpheus will probably fail as he failed in trusting Persephone, but as Hermes says this is not a trick, it is not an impossible task. It's a test, that Orpheus could have passed, but ultimately failed. I also see more meaning in Hades giving them a real chance rather than a trick that they could never pass, it makes the ending so much more tragic, as they literally had the chance to being reunited and failed. This is at least how I see the "I let them try", of course you are ree to disagree :)

    I love Hades and Persephone’s dialogue. After everything they’ve been through and all the issues they’ve had, there’s hope that they’ll have a happy ending. Considering Hades usually isn’t a villain in Greek mythology and Persephone usually loves Hades in most interpretations, I like to think it worked out between the two of them.

    Hades and Persephone have their ups and downs but the reason I like them the most out of the greek pantheon is because of their loyalty to each others and their honesty, which is something that most gods and heros don't really posses. Hades has always been a man of his word when making deals and he loves his wife so much. He is the only one that doesn't do around sticking his dick in every hole.

    The thing that gets me most about the ending is that Eurydice isn't singing, she's screaming, as if she hopes that Orpheus can hear her and that he'll trust her voice to follow. It's as if she believes that in some way or another, her singing will come through and keep his hopes up, and then when it's so quiet at the end, you'll know that he's scared, and that he doesn't trust anymore, and that he'll inevitably fail.

    You know, considering Hermes' speech at the beginning of the play, about how this is a tragic tale with a bitter end, but even though they will continue to tell it in the hope it will turn out better someday, it would be amazing if, when the time will come for the last performance, they actually were to do an alternative ending where Orpheus and Eurydice make it through the final trial without yielding to doubt and temptation. Like, I don't know, maybe when Orpheus is about to look back, at the last second, the characters decide that, no, it's not going to go like that this time around, Eurydice jumps behind her lover and put a hand on each side of his head to prevent him from committing the irreparable and help him keep his eyes on the road ahead. Thus, with the Fates having finally been checkmated, the play would have fulfilled its purpose, and the curtain would fall, for the first and last time, without any regret on their story and on the coming spring...

    Obviously, Eurydice's belt is amazing and gets a lot of attention here, but I need to talk about Hades and Persephone's exchange. It's so short and sweet, but it's the ultimate payoff of Wait For Me and their whole arc. It's easily one of my favorite parts of the entire musical.
