I LOVE how Hades says “it’s time for spring” in this version, instead of the original “it’s almost spring”. It may not seem like much of a difference, but the original version, he’s passive to Persephone’s departure - he doesn’t want her to go, he wants to keep her close even though it hurts her, but it’s the terms of their agreement. By saying “it’s time for spring”, though, he actively acknowledges that she must go and pushes her to leave, although it hurts him. He finally puts her needs above his own, and nudges her leave because he knows it’s what she needs. Such a small change, but it has SUCH an impact!

When Orpheus says "It's not a trick?" he sounds so afraid and hopeful at the same time. It tugs my heartstrings every time.
I love that even though Hades is technically the villain of this musical, he isn’t evil: he’s just. He gives them a fair second chance at love that ultimately fails because of Orpheus’ curiosity and distrust.

It's also what he says at the start "The hound that howls inside your head". The mind can play crazy tricks when you're scared. I think Orpheus was scared Eurydice wasn't gonna follow, since she went to Hadestown herself in the first place. And you never know with Hades anyway. It could've still been a trick.

But that is the point to doubt comes in. Whne you go a period of time with just your thoughts and no reassureance, the doubt becomes bigger than your faith and trust, which is why doubt usually ends up the winning factor incases of having faith and trust.

It shows that the true villain in the tale is not Hades or Hadestown, but human nature, such as doubt
@rowandownie890
5 жыл бұрын
@@Ace-sy3rt Exactly. It's not saying that either of these characters are bad or evil, it just shows true human nature. Hades wanted to test Orpheaus to see if he can overcome severe doubt for the one he loves. Human nature kicked in and showed he couldn't, which doesnt mean that he didnt love her, just shows that doubt is hard to overcome.
@glaucopis303

I haven't seen the full show yet, but it's said that it's the doubt that makes Orpheus turn around, right? Anyway, here's an interesting fact about this myth: my ancient greek teacher said that some scholars think that Orpheus might have turned around to make Eurydice go back to the Underworld. The reason? No one can be the same after an experience like death. She belonged to the Underworld now. If there's any mistake, sorry, but English isn't my first language.
Hades said he let them "TRY". He knew that Orpheus would look back for her because he is associated with the Fates. If u didn't know, well, the Fates can tell the past, present and future. Hades knew they wouldn't make it out.
@Hakajin
4 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. As is a frequent motif in Greek/Roman myths, you could interpret the Fates on a more metaphorical level. In this case, that would be that Hades knew (or at least had a strong feeling) that Orpheus would fail, because he sees so much of himself in Orpheus. He knows these patterns because he's older and has been through them. In other words, he knows the Fates' voices, and how easy it is to give into them. The doubt they voice is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
@marybrennan707
2 жыл бұрын
I know you could believe this but this is actually wrong this was actually a test to see if he could put his trust in humans
@giadaferrari8543
2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with this interpretation. Hades might be associated with the fates, but ONLY the Fates actually know the future. Hades would have no sure knowledge of what is going to happen and the Fates do not answer to Hades in ay way, so he would have no way to force them in telling them. He might think Orpheus will probably fail as he failed in trusting Persephone, but as Hermes says this is not a trick, it is not an impossible task. It's a test, that Orpheus could have passed, but ultimately failed. I also see more meaning in Hades giving them a real chance rather than a trick that they could never pass, it makes the ending so much more tragic, as they literally had the chance to being reunited and failed. This is at least how I see the "I let them try", of course you are ree to disagree :)
@malyka6639

yeahhh no. The fates only revealed things in pieces. They wouldn't have just told him outright, if at all. They have no master
I love Hades and Persephone’s dialogue. After everything they’ve been through and all the issues they’ve had, there’s hope that they’ll have a happy ending. Considering Hades usually isn’t a villain in Greek mythology and Persephone usually loves Hades in most interpretations, I like to think it worked out between the two of them.

Hades and Persephone have their ups and downs but the reason I like them the most out of the greek pantheon is because of their loyalty to each others and their honesty, which is something that most gods and heros don't really posses. Hades has always been a man of his word when making deals and he loves his wife so much. He is the only one that doesn't do around sticking his dick in every hole.

Well it's not like Hermes ever lead him astray, nor did Orpheus really had anyone but himself to blame for Eurydice leaving him in the first place. I say that because Orpheus's mother is "a friend of [Hermes(according to the new Road to Hell)]", Hermes' is practically Orpheus's godfather.

The thing that gets me most about the ending is that Eurydice isn't singing, she's screaming, as if she hopes that Orpheus can hear her and that he'll trust her voice to follow. It's as if she believes that in some way or another, her singing will come through and keep his hopes up, and then when it's so quiet at the end, you'll know that he's scared, and that he doesn't trust anymore, and that he'll inevitably fail.

@Cassie Doerksen Yeah I know, I'm talking metaphorically. Belting in musicals usually means that the character is screaming.
The ending with Eurydice singing is so ICONIC and one of my favorite parts of the musical, but I can’t lie... when Orpheus and Eurydice first sang the chorus and he sang so softly I started tearing up. It’s like listening to angels

"hades you let them go" is so underrated. just the quiet joy and surprise in her voice, like she hadnt seen the man she loved in years and just now was able to see him in hades again 🥲
That "I'm coming" I'M DECEASED
The "Doubt Comes In" theme that plays when the Fates speak at the back of Orpheus' mind at 3:10 before Hermes cautions him about doubt in the next verse is my favourite thing

Same! But they didn’t release Lover’s Desire with Hades and Persephone, so...?
THAT NOTE CHANGE MADE ME DESEASED !!!! I NEVER KNEW I COULD DIE
You know, considering Hermes' speech at the beginning of the play, about how this is a tragic tale with a bitter end, but even though they will continue to tell it in the hope it will turn out better someday, it would be amazing if, when the time will come for the last performance, they actually were to do an alternative ending where Orpheus and Eurydice make it through the final trial without yielding to doubt and temptation. Like, I don't know, maybe when Orpheus is about to look back, at the last second, the characters decide that, no, it's not going to go like that this time around, Eurydice jumps behind her lover and put a hand on each side of his head to prevent him from committing the irreparable and help him keep his eyes on the road ahead. Thus, with the Fates having finally been checkmated, the play would have fulfilled its purpose, and the curtain would fall, for the first and last time, without any regret on their story and on the coming spring...

I love how orpheus starts off as an optimist in the beginning, and eurydice starts as a pessimist, but as the story progresses they change, orpheus becomes pessimistic, and eurydice becomes optimistic.
Orpheus and Eurydice's lines in synch at the start sound kind of like the doubled Orpheus from the concept album!

This musical, despite saying "this is a tragedy, a failed love", and being a huge fan of Greek mythology since a child, I was still so fucking disappointed and heartbroken and like WHAT???? NO, HE HAD TO MAKE IT!!! AND THAT IS GOOD STORY TELLING
So I've been memeing in the comments of the last songs from this drop but Hermes' advice in this song is genuinely so impactful and helpful to me, I don't have any jokes here. "The meanest dog you'll ever meet He ain't the hound dog in the street. He bares some teeth and tears some skin, But brother, that's the worst of him. No, the dog you really got to dread is The one that howls inside your head. It's him whose howling drives men mad And a mind to its undoing."

Look, I'm not saying the chorus after Hades' "I will" makes me get misty eyes every time, but I'm totally saying it makes me get misty eyes every time.
3:12 First seeds of Orpheus' failure are here: The first time the Fates sang "Who are you?" to Orpheus, he had a rebuttal all set to go: the tune Hades sang when he met Persephone, a tune Orpheus plucked out of thin air. That's who he is - a bringer of kindness and beauty, whom the workers of Hadestown follow like flowers follow sunlight. But now the Fates are singing "Who are you?" again, and Orpheus has no answer.
"Wait for me" "I will" Gods I can't wait to see this
4:24 ICONIC!!
2:42 “And how about you and I? Are we gonna try again?” “It’s time for spring.. we’ll try again next fall” “Wait for me?” “I will” MY FUCKING HEART- BYE
Eva's "I'm coming" gave me chills AND I DO NOT GET CHILLS FROM SONGS OFTEN and man I didn't expect this for this drop (I thought the Orpheus and Eurydice one) but I'm not complaining!!!
