My favorite part of this reaction was where Desmond says “I can’t hear you” and you say “yes you can”. I’m Christian but never been extremely religious like this man. And the idea of someone having a moment where he asks God a question and GOD RESPONDS … I get chills every time I see that.

Oh and odd trivia, normal you would not have seen to many above the knee amputations at this time (at least according to a dr/historian reacts video lol) but the gentleman that played the amputee is an actual amputee from Afghanistan and he used his prosthetics during the basic training scenes and then obviously not during the hospital scene. Finding that out made me go back and watch his injury scene again and I watched with a completely different perspective

Gibson had to tone down Doss's actual achievements to make the film more "realistic" (I did not know Mel Gibson actually knew what that word meant) Doss had already been kicking ass and saving lives long before they got to Okinawa. Treating others blistered feet before tending to his own, carrying twice the weight of ordinary soldiers due to the heaviness of all that medical equipment, and had been promoted to Corporal. He also helped to fix the nets to the top of the cliff (and you're right, it wasn't that tall, it was only 30 feet and they had to reset the nets every day because the Japanese would, in fact, CUT THEM DOWN. As was the logical thing to do. During the battle of the Escarpment, Doss was hit three times...first with a bullet to the shoulder, whereafter he insisted the other medics take the more wounded back first and leave him....then while crawling to help another man, another bullet (from a TANK) shattered his arm, and it was too dangerous for him to be taken back, so he crawled 200 yards to the nets on his own, with his knees and shattered arm....and finally the wounds that sent him home, bitchslapping a couple of grenades. His own estimate as to how many people he'd carried back was 50, but his fellow soldiers disagreed and insisted it was well over 120. 75 was the compromise.

So i looked up the full details for this and, just with the officially varified numbers, he save 75 men within 12 hours resulting in an average of one man saved every 9.6 minutes. This man truely earned all the legends started about him.

What is unique about this film is the great lengths the film goes to recreating realistically and accurately the confusion and carnage and horrors of warfare

This is one of my favorites for first time reaction videos because it’s just so powerful. I will forever feel that Andrew Garfield should have won the best actor Oscar for this performance. Let me reiterate once again how happy I am that you are back doing these videos. I know in the grand scheme of things going on in the world right now these aren’t that important but your videos bring people happiness. And any chance for happiness is valuable

Very admirable man. A book about his life was one of the first ones I had my daughter read. The Bible actually teaches that it is a sin to “murder”, it also teaches that there is “a Time to kill“. Big difference. That being said, I still greatly admire Desmond‘s conviction and the price he paid to stand for it. Though it is not hip now to except this, the fact is that his faith in the true and living God is what made him a great man, and he would be the first to say that. We are not cosmic Stardust floating around with no purpose.

As a veteran I am proud to see today’s interest in the military genre of movies. The advances in special effects have presented such an immersive visual effect, those without military experience can get a little idea of the “HARSH REALITY” our military can face. I had the honor to attend a special showing of “Saving Private Ryan” the second week of its theatrical release. The first two rows (floor level and one up) were reserved for WWII veterans & family. Just before the coming attractions showed, approximately 20 people were ushered to their seats. At the end only subdued sniffles and sobs could be herd with NOONE moving to leave. After a brief pause the first of the veterans got up to leave, while the rest of us in attendance gave them ALL a standing ovation as they left. There seems to be a flow-over effect of people watching some older movies; “Full Metal Jacket”, “Platoon”, “M*A*S*H”, “Apocalypse Now” etc. I think these movies are great but need to be viewed with the filter of social commentary for the time they were made. I would like to see reactions to two older movies, based on two of the most decorated war heroes. These movies, though not posing the fantastic special effects of today’s movies, contain just as much interest by the simple act of storytelling. The first is the story of one of the most decorated soldiers of WWI. The main character of the story (Alvin C York) chose actor Gary Cooper to portray him. Released in September 1941, just before America entered WWII, “Sergeant York”. The second story is about the MOST DECORATED soldier of WWII. The movie not only adapted from his autobiography (Audie Murphy) but starred him as well. From October 1955, just over ten years after the end of the war “To Hell and Back”.

Hacksaw Ridge is arguably the greatest WW2 movie ever made. Yes, I think it's better than the propaganda war movie, Saving Private Ryan. Hacksaw is about a real and extraordinary person. Plus, I think this is Andrew Garfield's finest performance so far. I love Desmonds speech in court. "With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it dont seem so bad to try to put a little of it back together." I love watching Desmond's dedication and conviction in the worst environment imaginable. Hes so full of hope and faith. And Garfield totally sells it. I cry buckets every time. "Help me get one more." I totally grew to care about Smitty. He was a total bad*** with that BAR. I cried when he died. I grew to care about most of Desmond's squad, including Ghoul. This may also be Vince Vaughns best. Then to top it all off, i love seeing the real Desmond Doss, his brother and the Captain talk about everything that took place. Desmonds story about helping the soldier see again brought me to tears again.

It might interest you to know that Desmond Doss had tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ridge so he had to stiffle his coughing as so not to give away his location while finding injured soldiers he was diagnosed while in the V.A hospital and lost a lung to it. Gibson left out so much of what happened up on the ridge as it was mind blowing and truly like an angel was watching over him. Desmond was already a seasoned soldier by the time of hacksaw ridge as he was in the Pacific where he saved many men too and for that he was awarded the bronze star just like his father was awarded for lives he saved in WW1 too. In his military career he saved around 300 men. A truly amazing man. I truly recommend his autobiography as its truly amazing. It took nearly 9hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it other battalions joined in the search because of what he did for them all.

In the final scenes of the real people have spoke about his brother so yes he survived. I feel blessed after having seen that movie to have a lady living in my home whose family knew Desmond personally. And yes she says he was exactly the way the movie presented him.

When they beat up Desmond I took it as they did it on their own. They were mad at Desmond because they all kept getting punished because Desmond refused to touch a weapon. They were getting their weekend passes revoked, KP all the time, and 20-mile hikes because of Desmond's refusal. So they did it on their own because they were mad, but the higher-ups were slightly setting it up. They were trying to make things harder for Desmond but everyone got punished as a result. Also, his brother Hal survived he was one of the real-life interviews at the end of the film. That was their hint to tell you that he made it since they didn't follow his military journey.

Doss I think was put up for 2 CMH, and actually saved a lot more guys. Even his prayers, before a unit he was attached to, were epic, and the units he was attached to, would NOT go into battle, until he prayed for them! I recall reading one time, where he didn't pray for his attached unit, before a battle and they got chewed up, badly. He never forgot to pray, again!

The problem with war is its never started by the people who need to fight it. You can call them whatever you want to justify killing them. Enemy, monster, demon, take your pick. Your job is to be a good soldier and kill for your country, even when it doesn't matter that the other person is just a normal human like you. You are looking into a mirror, the only difference is where you happened to be born. You're both fighting for the glory and prevailing of your country. Yes there are exceptions to this, sometimes you really are killing simply evil people. But most of the time as a soldier, this is not the case. Any person with a good grasp on the right morals will understand why he even saved the japanese "enemies". Because really this is just a dichotomy placed in front of you to lessen the blow that you are killing normal people, who in any other circumstance except the very one you are in, could've been a great friend.. a great love.. a great person to you.

Excellent movie and a great reaction. You want suggestions for movies. One that's underrated but a great movie is The Accountant with Ben Affleck, I think you'd really enjoy it. Saving Private Ryan is another choice. Desmond's Medal of Honor official record says he saved 75. Others estimated he saved 100, he said probably about 50, so they split the difference. Later Army analysis showed it was about 100, perhaps a few more.

Thank you Mel Gibson for sharing the story of Pvt Doss. The only difference between fact and fiction is that fiction has to be believable. This story proves that. A story too unbelievable for fiction . I’m an atheist but Doss proves that whether god is real or not, faith can be an incredible source of energy and strength.

There are several reports, albeit unreliable ones, that suggest that several Japanese soldiers saw Doss and failed to shoot him for one reason or another. One story says that a soldier had Doss in his sights, but his gun jammed twice, even though nothing seemed wrong with it. Another story has a former soldier stating that he may have seen Doss, as at one point, he saw a medic giving plasma on the field. He aimed at the medic, but he just didn't end up firing, and the medic carried the wounded soldier away without ever noticing the Japanese soldier aiming at him the whole time. A more reliable report states that during an engagement prior to Okinawa, Doss's squad had 0 casualties and only a few wounded. When asked by superior officers how they managed a nearly flawless engagement, the men simply replied "Pvt. Doss prayed for us." There's something about the strange coincidences that seem to pop up around truly heroic people. Maybe it's because heroes are lucky that they survive to become heroes, or maybe there's something else happening that none of us will ever understand. I'm not a religious person, but Doss's story makes me wonder sometimes.

God's strength supercedes Man's. I think Desmond's acts are the most obvious miracle that I've heard about that's happened in recent memory. I don't know any man that has that within himself and I damn sure know I don't have it. I think that's the power of it, we know there's something about it that is just beyond us as men. But I know God can give that to a man when it is His plan if they just trust Him. I don't know how to understand this story outside of that paradigm

The "knife" you're referring to is called a bayonet. Lol Isaiah 40:28-31 He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.

All Mel Gibson movies are great beautiful and violent. Passion of the Christ, hacksaw Ridge, Once we were Soldiers, Braveheart, and others. Also usually based on real events, or true stories. He should do the story of the greatest soldier of all time, Roy Benevides, The Lazarus Soldier! Type that in, here. I met him once when I was stationed at Bragg!

What rarely exists anymore, was being a soldier, was a calling. Like prophet, preacher evangelist, cop foreman, doctor nurse. Soldiers are the most talked about profession, by God, in the Bible. It's not this way anymore. It's been beat out of us, since the Clinton era. A long ago general once said, " I thank God for those that are called to service, and woe to America, the day, when they're not called anymore!"
