Hacking the Limbic System: Comfort, Fear, Excitement and Learning

#limbicsystem #brain #education
Humanizing our courses - especially online courses - has gained a lot of attention recently. But have you wondered WHY it's so important? It's all about the brain - and the limbic system in particular.
It is essential that we understand the differences between excitement and fear, since our goal is to provide learning environments that stimulate curiosity and encourage students to try new skills and to make mistakes. However, students are easily overwhelmed and can become traumatized, especially when they make mistakes in front of classmates. The limbic system is responsible for basic drives, emotion and memory, so learning about basic neuroscience can help educators create positive learning environments in which they can make sure students feel comfortable and safe when they are trying new things. The implications of this knowledge are tremendous.
