4 years ago when my mother died, I turned to shopping to cope with my grief. Every shiny new thing provided an instant mood lift but of course it lasted a fleeting moment. This has continued over the years and now I feel like I am a full blown shopaholic. Their is a constant urge to buy something! I shop to cope with the difficult situations in my life. I work at a hospital and I have shopped a lot since the beginning of Covid. I do frequent purges because I can’t stand the visual clutter. I recognize the problem and I am trying to change but it is really hard. Before my mom died, I wasn’t like this at all. Now I justify my habit by saying ‘life is short’. Perhaps it’s time to sit down and talk with someone.

I am sorry for your loss and continuing struggle. Also, 2020 was hard, and 2021 is only a little better. My mom also used shopping to cope, and her after her mom died, she started hoarding, although not at Discovery TV levels. My deep sadness is that she blew so much money and saved so little. She now needs assisted living and will have to rely mostly on Medicaid to pay. So be careful. I know you are coping as well as you know how to right now; please accept my hug. This is not the best self-care for you for the long term. But you have the power to heal and get past this. Be strong, and yes, get help.

I did this too Kar, when my mum died 9 years ago. Then I left banking and started working in retail fashion. The waste and pressure to buy more even as a staff member was huge. I ended up giving $4000 in clothing to the thrift store when I left. It unfortunately was all rubbish fast fashion. Instead of clothes treat yourself to a manicure or haircut or get a massage

Great suggestions! Especially shopping your closet. When I'm tempted to buy something I see online, I'll get up, go to my closet and find a way to put a couple of new outfits together with my existing wardrobe. That way I get the happy dopamine hit of "hey, new look" without buying something. Today I'm lusting after "sweater dressing," so I'm headed upstairs to try my sweaters with my one pair of knit sweater pants, different belts and shoes. A few days ago it was "monochromatic dressing," so I tried similar colors together.

I do this too! My theory (confirmed by experience) is that if it still looks good in the second-hand store, itʻs not going to fall apart the second I get it home and wash it. I was Marie Kondo before Marie Kondo was Marie Kondo (Iʻm pretty sure). When I decided to move away from my 25-year marriage, and needed to furnish everything myself in my new space, I frequented antique stores and second-hand shops, with one caveat: whatever I bought was not to "just make do" "until I found what I *really* want" -- I had to be willing to PAY FULL PRICE for the item. Did I love it enough to pay full price for it? Was I looking at the item to "just make do"? Nope, I had to really really really LOVE the item or I couldnʻt buy it. In someone elseʻs parlance, if I was looking at an item, it had to be a "HELL YEAH" for me, not just a "meh." When you do that, when everything that surrounds you in your environment is something you really LOVE, think about it! You are walking into an environment filled with love, when you come home! Itʻs an amazing feeling. I walked away from a lot of things that were "okay" "until I get what I want" that way. And the right thing always came to me when I needed it. The other challenge and fun thing I have going with thrift stores: they give me an indication of where my energy is at any moment. Maybe I am just dying for a red and black striped wool blanket, like I just saw (this was over 20 years ago) in the LL Bean catalog, priced $250; canʻt afford the $250. It took several months of waiting patiently, but I spent time with that red and black wool blanket in my head many times, and eventually -- there it was at the thrift store. It was stuffed with dog hair and I probably washed it ten times before the dog hair all came out, but it did. It was $8. I am still overjoyed every time I see it. Sometimes I can manifest something I suddenly need, almost instantly. Thatʻs fun! Thatʻs where Iʻm at pretty much now. Think about a nice pair of black loafers...voila, there they are, my size, leather soles, Italian made, and they fit like a glove. Now, if I think about something and "need" it and go to the thrift store and itʻs *not* there -- itʻs a message to me too. My grandson (age 12) has experienced this with me. Several months ago he wanted a black hoodie. Plain. No writing on it. Just plain. He and his dad went to all of the stores in the city where he lives, and they found nothing. I brought him home to stay for a few days and on the way home thereʻs a thrift store I know very well, so we stopped there. It took us literally 5 minutes. We went to the rack where the menʻs hoodies lived, there was ONE there that was plain, it was black, he slipped it on, perfect. We paid and left. Five minutes start to finish. Weʻve done that in previous years for his back-to-school clothes. We laugh about it, but we both know itʻs true. I am a Thrift Store Magician.

Love your videos and your focus on sustainability. As a retiree I love to stroll our neighborhood mall on rainy days. To avoid buying I set myself a challenge of finding at least one new outfit idea or color combination in the shop windows which I can then shop my closet for. I love getting home and trying out the ideas. My husband and I then sit down to a tasty homemade lunch, cup of tea and recorded TV show...no money spent at all!!

Yes, I feel this is a state of emptiness in people. Tryibg to fill an empty space. I have caught a few episodes of the minimalist KZread channel & it very much makes so much sense. I have to admit I love a good thrift excursion & purchasing unique & interesting items to fit my asthetic but I know I do it for a rush sometimes or because I am restless but becuase of budget restraints I am very picky, limited in my purchases.

I agree! My great-grandparents, grandparents and parents were all "old" when they had their offspring, so fast-forward to me who had generations' worth of "old fashioned" influence in her childhood, I feel like all these sustainable living, charity shop shopping etc trends are catching up with me ;) Joking aside though, there is something incredibly rewarding about achieving something around the home - if we all mended more than we bought for example, a LOT would change.

I have a “shopping list” in my notes app. Basically when I see something (usually online) that I want to buy, I put it on my list. I’ll usually wait a week or two or until my next pay check and decide if I want to purchase 1 thing off the list. Quite often, if something sits on the list for more than a month, it doesn’t get purchased. I think the psychology for me with this is delaying gratification. If I just wait, even a small amount of time, I usually don’t want the item anymore or if I decide I do want it, I have enough money to spend.

Sometimes shopping in your favorite store is just looking. Shopping is therapy to me. I love just going into a store and experiencing the displays, the colors, the music and rifling through the racks to feel the textures and holding things up to me to see if the color would go with my skin is like heaven to me. I've spent days doing that and walk out without buying anything. I know there are things that are at a price point that I will not go to. I buy things that bring me joy and are the right price and I have money to spend. So not going by my favorite shop would bring me incredible stress. Knowing that I have more than I need at this point in time and that I love my clothing to the point that I can't make up my mind what I want to wear for an occasion because I have several beautiful choices a wonderful place to be in. I get my love of beautiful things from my mother. It does take discipline sometimes to walk out without a bag in hand.

The shopping trigger is definitely something I notice. I had a bad experience online dating and ordered clothes as I knew it would help me to feel better. Luckily I'm still money savvy and only kept what was useful and returned the rest. Growing up I never had a choice in what I wore and it was all hand me downs whilst other children had better clothes and shoes. If you wore bad clothes in secondary school here you were more likely to be bullied. So I think it created this desire to have nice new things, as a kind of armour against the bullies. As I get older though, I realise I could have saved a lot more to buy things that would matter more to me like a house. So I'm slowly shifting to shop more responsibly.

  • @marijeb278

Thanks Alyssa, over the past months, you've had such a positive impact on my style!! What really helped me in adopting slow fashion habits was identifying the things that lowered my "hoarding threshold" ( is that a thing? it now is!), and remedying those. such as: - having an already overflowing wardrobe. If my wardrobe is full and a bit chaotic, it's much easier to add to the pile, while I'm much more hesitant to add things when my wardrobe is looking nice& organised. - Being surrounded by things that make me unhappy about what I looked like, such as clothes that didn't fit properly, because I unconsciously remedy that feeling by buying new things. - having actual wardrobe gaps that are not properly addressed. For example; when I reviewed my closet, I realised I didn't own a good pair of pants, because I don't really like buying them. Which obviously creates the feeling that you don't have enough to wear. But because I didn't identify properly what was missing, I remedied it by buying things I do like buying, such as shirts, dresses and skirts, and kept on buying them because the feeling of not not having anything to wear didn't go away. Additionally, keeping track of your "purchase fails" and adding these notes to your shopping list also helps, such as buying the wrong materials, buying because of peer pressure, not checking sizes sufficiently when buying online).

I love the tips you gave. I am trying to get better with my shopping impulse. One thing that helps is using an app to record what you have. When you do that, I know it happened to me, you realize just how much you already have and you can work on de cluttering as you go. If you don’t want an app, write it down in a journal. See how many pages you fill and keep outfit ideas handy to make better use of what you have.

COVID craziness lasting so darn long has resulted in boredom shopping and I have a huge wardrobe! I started a 3 month no buy, October 1st and am redoing my clothing storage. I love putting outfits together and go play in my wardrobe putting together 3-5 looks instead of online shopping. I am also exercising more and am excited to join the movement of closet shopping , making a list, waiting to see if I really want items and shopping more consciously. In addition every time I don’t shop, I am moving money to another account, calling it my vacation fund! I want to travel more! I am excited for this journey. I am also perusing for outfit inspirations to copy instead of shopping websites.

My nature is such that I keep my once bought clothes for ages or till they get really not wearable anymore. I have a classic style with a pinch of what's trendy so keeping my clothes and restyling them is very nice and easy. And you inspire me so much, Alyssa 🙏🙂 I also buy second hand (in second hand shops or from friends) and I love it. My other sustainable habit is giving a second or a third life to items like furniture. Discovering how to make furniture over gave me so much joy and inspired my creativity. And I re-use what reusable. What you said about changing a trigger is very important and often used as a therapy in healing addiction (it is true psychological thing).

Taking that moment to pause and question has saved me a number of times when I go out shopping, especially if I feel tempted to buy something that I know I don't need or that I know I already have enough of. Especially in the case of my former addictions to handbags or wallets (which I tend to slip up on occasionally), I try to really use and appreciate what I already have before moving onto that process of buying something new or even decluttering past purchases that no longer work or fit my style. I highly appreciate content like this, Alyssa. Keep up the great work!

Great advice, as always! Some things that helped me go from having far too many clothes to much less were: A session with an image consultant, so I could really hone in on clothes that I loved and suited me and my lifestyle A notebook with wishlists/gaps for each season (some things might be on the list for a long time, and that's ok) Also notes on what worked and what didn't, so I don't make repeat mistakes Changing clothes over each season, so 4 times a year, rather than twice, it feels like a new wardrobe Spending time choosing items, carefully, so they last longer

I love shopping in charity shops because where there is only one choice of an item, you tend to use your own style, to put an outfit together. Whereas in the high street, everyone is buying the same clothes, so every body is dressing the same.

I really love the suggestion about re-associating your triggers with something else. I often find myself wanting to go browse a nearby used clothing shop in the afternoon when I’m tired at work, and I often end up buying things I really didn’t need. What I’ll try to tell myself when that urge strikes is, ‘You’re tired and want a break - don’t shop, just walk around the block a couple times!’. 😊 But that brings me to the tip about shopping used, which is itself a trigger when you’re a compulsive shopper - it feels more virtuous because you’re recycling items, BUT it often leads to needless buying and keeping the binge-purge cycle going. ☹️

My body has changed a lot with last two pregnancies and I caught myself in trying to find all of the missing pieces in my wardrobe matching my current body. But recently I got so overwhelmed with the boxes coming in and then returning them (sometimes quite pricy because Brexit) and I am so done. I think I will make a no buy time at least until end of the year. Love from Switzerland 🇨🇭

I absolutely agree with you; however, I am quite an instinctive shopper, usually when I go with list I will never find what I want, I live in a village , our nearest large town with decent shops is over an hour away and because we are in the North we just don't get the best choice in clothes. The other thing is I went into TKMax the other day to get essential oils (list) , but always allow myself a look around as they sell items from all over the world ( some of my favourite wardrobe items come from there) , and I actually find a jumper by chance in the colour I've been looking for to go with some tricky to match trousers. So if I was sticking to plan I would have bought oils and walked out and missed out on the jumper.

Alyssa, I wondered what you thought about closet management apps and if you have ever tried one. Ideally it would enable you to document everything you own, suggest and record outfit combinations and record how many times you wear something. Also good for seeing what similar items you already have if you are tempted by a new item. I would quite like to try one out but I don't know where to start, there are just so many, and often with very poor reviews. I also need Android not Apple. Perhaps some of your followers could recommend one?

If I do find myself wanting to impulse buy some thing, I only allow myself to buy it if it is an item that strikes me like a lightning bolt. Some thing I know I will regret walking away from. And I also make myself come up with at least three outfits out of my own clothes that it would work with before I buy it.

Such good advice! Usually what stops me is being aware of my physical and emotional state and knowing I have other expenses that need to be covered like high school band fees for my son and other extra curricular activities he is in that can be a little costly and how awful I would feel if I couldn’t pay those things for him because I blew a bunch of money on stuff we don’t need. This isn’t to say I don’t buy myself stuff I have just learned to plan for it better. 💙

Two tips: i write down each everything i buy so i can see at the end of the month how much I've spent on clothes. Some months come in at 0€ so that's good. The other tip is to swap clothes with friends. We pass our unwanted pieces between us. Maybe it doesn't fit well anymore or we just don't like it so much.

Just envisioned myself trying to balance on one foot while thinking don't go shopping don't go shopping don't go shopping can't go shopping don't buy stuff Jewel. Lols inevitably falling on my face. I really find telling somebody like your favorite thrifting partner or your partner partner about it saying it out loud, really helps concrete home your affirmations and goals. Although I only shop second hand, the problem for me isn't fun and great things, it's the finding of the great things, the treasure hunt is the part that I enjoy the most. What this cashmere? Yeah it's $800 brand new, me I got it at Goodwill for 8:50. It's my brag, that part's hard too.

I rarely buy any hot drinks or food outside. I carry a thermos or walk into a cafe and ask for tap water. I'm so used to not eating when I'm out that I don't feel hungry and I don't want to eat processed (fattening) food anyway. I eat and drink before I leave the house and save a lot of money. I'd rather use that money to feed the birds, squirrels and the neighbourhood foxes and their cub.

hello, you always look good. However why do you promote second hand clothing? I am not against it and have one or two items that I bought second hand, but I know people who would only by new because they feel that they cannot wear something that somebody else has worn before. Also people tend to think that second hand clothing are for people who do not have enough money to go to a store to buy the piece of clothing new. I am not wealthy, but I am not poor and can buy new clothing but some second hand clothing is good quality. I am from the UK and find it a little off putting when the media always mentions how much Kate Midletons clothes cost. That is not necessary. Are very expensive garments always better??

Iʻd say 95% of my clothes and 75% of my furnishings are second-hand. You would not believe the quality of my clothing collection; most is linen, silk, cashmere, merino, down, cotton, leather, all natural fabrics. I really insist on all natural fabrics for just about everything. My mom was one of those who couldnʻt stand the idea that someone else had worn the clothing. It doesnʻt bother me at all. Everything I bring home, I smudge with sage, which is my little agreement with myself that makes the item "mine" and removes any attachments to the prior owner, and then I wash the item. Some of my favorite purchases: a long camel hair coat; a Ralph Lauren camel hair blazer; a menʻs taupe colored camel hair blazer; a menʻs black knee-length worsted wool overcoat; a womenʻs tightly fitted black wool blazer that I wear with "bigger" separates like billowy skirts; a ginormous menʻs worsted black wool blazer that I wear with tight tops and jeans and a pair of menʻs leather brogues; knee-high black leather boots, a "packable" black down jacket, menʻs. Menʻs jeans and trousers fit me better than womenʻs do, so I own several pair of menʻs Levis and black wool trousers. None of these items was more than $25. I have maybe 15 cashmere sweaters, all neutral colors, all for different purposes. All of this was thrifted. I would much rather spend $8.99 on a Ralph Lauren 100% camel hair blazer from the thrift store than $49.99 on a "wool" blend blazer from Wal-Mart. The new Wal-Mart blazer may be never worn before, and I may have to work on getting some weird little stain out of the Ralph Lauren -- which I succeeded in doing -- but the Wal-Mart blazer is going to lose its shape / rip out a pocket lining / drop buttons quickly / come unstitched at the seams and Iʻll be taking it to the Goodwill in two years; the Ralph Lauren blazer Iʻll keep and it will look good on me for the next 25 years. I also understand the idea that only poor people can afford to shop at the thrift stores. Believe me, I have seen many a Mercedes and even a Lamborghini parked out in front of the Goodwill. There is no shame in shopping there. These days, there are "billionaires" and then thereʻs "the rest of us" and we all shop at Goodwill. I think I can buy much better stuff there, and a wider selection all at one time, than anywhere else I can shop. I also use shopgoodwill dot com.
