    The Dutch created New york city which was called New Amsterdam back in the day, and the east coast of the USA was called New Netherlands. Harlem (new Haarlem) was named after Haarlem, which is a Dutch city that you see on the video. After the Dutch were gone they changed the name to Harlem because that's the how to pronounce it in English.

    NYC was called Nieuw-Amsterdam, yes, but I'm talking about Harlem, which is a part of Manhattan in NYC. This part of the city was called Nieuw-Haarlem until the English took over.

    I was in this Harlem shake. on the left with a box on my head. bit let's be honest, why are there so many people judging on this video. We had a LOT of fun. that's most important in my opinion. and it's BULLSHIT duthies can't dance.. bc we really can. stop judging and go take a look at yourself before you hate on someone else.

    The American Harlem comes from the Haarlem in the Netherlands. Every place in the US that has the same name as a city in Europese gets his name from the city in Europe and not the other way around. And Haarlem is spelled "right" and Harlem "wrong".

  • @ruudvdlinden
    @ruudvdlinden11 жыл бұрын

    Harlem (part of NYC) was founded by a Dutch guy who called it Nieuw-Haarlem. When the English took over that part, they called it Harlem. So Harlem was actually named after the Dutch city of Haarlem (near Amsterdam). So this actually IS the original Haarlem Shake (not to be confused with the original Harlem Shake).

    it isnt, harlem shake is named after a district in new york where it came from. this is haarlem in the netherlands, but there is a connection. new york was founded by dutch settlers, it was originally called new amsterdam before the english took it over, but many of the streetnames and areas still have an ''englished'' dutch name. harlem in new york comes from the dutch haarlem

    Erm, the idea of this video is that they do the 'Harlem shake', in front of the 'central train station of Haarlem'. There is no offending anybody, it's just that Harlem is the English way of saying Haarlem, which makes this video sort of a joke. Seriously, don't feel offended! :o
