This is EXACTLY how I stock up my prepper pantry!!! I started in 2020. Even though there has been no emergency, it has been a great hedge against inflation.

this is the best way to have some food security. Buy what you use and like and plan from that point

Another way is to reserve something like $20 a month for long term pantry purchases. Combine that with your sales watching, then it won't be a huge purchase every time as you can build your stash of food slowly. This is especially the case if someone doesn't have the storage abilities (e.g. lives in an apartment). Something simple like ready to eat cans of soup like those Progresso cans (18-20oz), would be about 10-12 cans for that $20. Then next month that same $20 could get a 20-25lbs bag of rice to help bulk up those soups. Another $20, and its beans, and canned meats (corned beef hash, spam, pulled pork, chicken, tuna), Again food that you'll actually eat, and easy way of stocking up for emergencies, without breaking the bank. Don't forget to budget a can opener, some fuel, and a pot to make that rice.

Mannn good call on the cans rusting inside of trash bin (galvanized corrosion?). I usually throw down boards on my wire shelves before stacking stuff on them but I'll be extra attentive to the metal on metal stuff.

Great tips! Whenever I see a sale on meat items, I will grab some to store in the freezer. I also keep my pantry items well stocked and refill when sales come up. I do the same with things like vitamins and toilet paper ever since Covid made people clear out stores😁 I figure if I have at least a 6 months supply then I should be able to make it through until things get restocked again.

You have a mincer. You might find that buying bulk beef and grinding your own-vacuum pack in kilo (I'm Australian) portions.

I'm planning to buy a quarter or half of a beef this year. It will already be cut, wrapped, and frozen. However, sometimes my grocer has giant roasts on sale and that is a way to get less expensive beef and cut it down or grind it down into smaller amounts.

Sucks that my wife hates canned stuff except green beans and corn. And boxed mac n cheese. Lol

His daughter should freeze the other half of her tomato paste for the next week. Now the supply has doubled & it takes a negligible amount of space in freezer & she can use the same baggie over & over.

I'm trying! Usually she at least puts plastic wrap on it and throws it in the fridge - but then it tends to sit there too long and gets gross.

At most dollar stores they have mini snack containers with lids (mini tupperware) perfect for freezer storage, I use mine for left over lemon juice as they hold 1 large lemons worth. We get lots of lemons, and before they go bad, I make these and freeze them. I run them under the hot water faucet for a few seconds to loosen the cube of lemon juice from the container, and use them to make a pitcher of lemon tea. www.dollartree.com/ccstore/v1/images/?source=/file/v6518130094770778061/products/206990_v42.jpg

Have you looked in to restaurant depot or other bulk food suppliers? Like restaurant depot or bulk delivery services?

I haven't. I find that grocery purchases on sale are inexpensive and I'm there anyways. But it is true that you can get some even better deals at bulk food suppliers!

A question- weevils. I freeze my flour for 48hours to kill any potential eggs. Then store in airtight glasslock containers in pantry. How can you prevent against weevils in pasta, dried lentils etc? I already use eco friendly weevil moth traps in pantry as I have had them before resulting in a loss of quite a lot of lentils etc. Looking forward to maple syrup videos.

I haven't had a problem with weevils. I think because most of my stuff is in air-tight packages and then in trash cans, and also stored in a cool basement corner?

Freezing can add extra moisture to your flour which may promote mold, if you oven can your flour, it will kill off any nasties, eggs, and even help remove excess moisture. Just fill your canning jars with flour till the bottom of the neck. Wipe the rims of the jars clean. Place the jars with no lids, on a cookie sheet, with the oven cold. Set your oven to the lowest setting which is usually 150-160'F, for 1 and a half hour. After the 1 and a half hour, open the oven, and put the canning lids on the jars, just hand tight, careful the jars are HOT. Leave the lidded jars in the oven to completely cool and seal with the oven door cracked open to let the heat escape (I use a metal potato chip bag clamp that fits my oven door). After the jars are cooled, check each for seals, and your done. You can use the same method for dried beans, and other grains.

Not yet. It isn't anything fancy. Browned onions, then 1 cup rinsed red lentils boiled in broth. Add diced tomatoes and 1 can coconut milk, 2 tbsp of tumeric, a bunch of sea salt. While it is all simmering cook up the paneer and/or meat and/or vegetables in a frying pan. Add it all together and serve :)

No additional cost :) Usually at an overall cost-savings. It's an alternative food security enhancement compared to how a lot of preppers promote buying freeze-dried foods or big bags of things like barley that you spend a lot of money on and then never use.
