H.S.H. Prince Hans-Adam II -- The State in the Third Millennium

Since 1989, H.S.H. Prince Hans-Adam II has reigned in Liechtenstein. Comprising 62 square miles nestled between Austria and Switzerland with a population of about 35,000, Liechtenstein is one of the world's smallest nations-but has the highest per capita GDP in the world. The head of a family that traces its history back more than 900 years, to the beginning of the second millennium, Prince Hans-Adam is the author of a new book, The State in the Third Millennium.
From his perspective as a ruling monarch, Prince Hans-Adam affirms the centrality of democracy in the modern nation-state and makes the case for limited government: "[The United States and Europe] have to free the state from all the unnecessary tasks and burdens with which it has been loaded during the last hundred years, which have distracted it from its two main tasks: maintenance of the rule of law and foreign policy."
Using the examples of China and Russia to illustrate the difficulty of transitioning from dictatorships to democracy, he asserts the primacy of establishing economic freedom. Finally, he speaks to the importance of America maintaining its preeminent role in world affairs.

As an American, I totally agree. What a delight, to see a leader who actually has libertarian ideals and doesn't want to conquer and rule half the world. His family is content with a small (but beautiful) patch of land in the Swiss Alps. This is the total opposite of the US. I pledge my allegiance to Prince Hans-Adam II before I pledge allegiance to Obama or the US Federal Government.

This is the most intelligent and great Heads of State. His family is also an example, the prince and the heir to the throne do not marry commoners. An example to follow.

Liechtenstein is rich because the voters used direct democracy in 1946 to cap the national income tax to 1%. It has remained that rate ever since, and the voters have also mandated taxation be decentralized as far as possible to allow the jurisdictions (like in Switzerland) to compete amongst themselves.

Every modern state should guarantee and protect religious freedom, but that doesn't mean that we must ignore the historical role Christianity has played in Europe and the values intrinsic within. Monarchies cannot be completely secular, by nature of their existence.

Reading this book sometimes reminds me of reading Hans-Hermann Hoppe, replace “self-determination” by “secession” and the rationale is the same. Wether it’s possible to a village to secede and become a country apart from Liechtenstein, and still none have done that, this Monarch achieved the otherwise called Utopian libertarian anarchy, if not the rule set of libertarian ethical axioms, certainly same ending achievement of liberty, and the reason why there is still “something” called a state it’s clearly a consent and legitimate sort of state, at least in Prince’s own definition of state which is a delimited territory. Otherwise (if not consent, not legitimate) one would have seceded. A couple of people shall never protest “end the state” or “I did not sign the social contract” because actually they can just opt-out Liechtenstein state and secede.

I like decentralisation but why only go as far as the state or village level rather than going all the way to the individual level? To a degree one could argue that the US was quite close to decentralising power to the individual level in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. At that time government spending was less than 10% of gdp and politicians pursued relatively laissez faire economic policy. There was no income tax. The first regulatory agency only came about in 1887. That period produced Edison, Tesla, Wright brothers, Carnegie and Rockefeller. The first skyscrapers, radios, telephone, trans-continental railway, record players, light bulbs, roll fill cameras and electric power came about during that period.

It won't be "dumb down" the public as there is robust, ongoing debate over several months; the legislature can put forward a "counter-proposal" - the "compromise"; the Prince gives his advisory opinion. Also, who is to say what is "foolish"? What self-evident, universally agreed upon criteria? If it is, repeal it. Switzerland - another constitutional Republic - is a symbol of stability - as the Prince points out, the petition process promotes decentralization/competition between jurisdictions.

Interesting indeed that Gefica Industries (reg. Lichtenstein) owns Adelphi House (within the John Adam St Gang), and that here we have Prince Hans-Adam II of Lichtenstein. People should google 'British politics controlled by the John Adam St Gang'. Also see youtube vids 'Ark Schools Academies & Eugenics' (Ark is of John Adam St Gang), & 'Ark and Eim Group' Google 'Atos, the Work Programme and Mandatroy Work Activity' (via the DWP, which is in Adelphi House - John Adam St Gang). I think his points about localized control, decentralization and secession is more important. The early european democratic proponents like Rousseau did only consider democracy workable in smaller communities of up to population about a thousand. This way people can observe and control others so as to not loot each other through politics. When you go to mass-democracy with millions of participants this direct control is severely diminished or eliminated entirely.

why did the hoover institution ask about foreign policy? That's one of the most amazing feats of this small nation. the fact that they have no standing army yet lead peaceful lives with no fear of terrorism or nothing. I'm a firm believer in non-interventionism and they have proved my viewpoint. But I get the feeling the Hoover Institute was avoiding that intentionally.

Now libertarianism seems to be en vogue even for nobility. One of the richest men in Europe: For him, managing a state like a business has all the benefits of the most venturous wet dreams of the wealthy. For his "progressive" thinking that he likes to show off, this model state still has some major flaws, e.g.: Everyone pays for the catholic church, which still deeply intertwines with the state. Easy leading a rich and small de facto monarchy with some conciliatory democratic elements…

What happens when the voting public become dumbed down and distracted by foolish matters? The petition process will become impotent and victim of the ever changing "Rule of Law" as a Democracy, instead of a fixed Constitutional Republic where citizens have security.

Are people idiots? Lichtenstein are rich because it is a tax and banking haven... This is what funds the economy. You cannot reproduce this on other levels but in places like Monaco, Switzerland, etc. Tax is not necessarily a bad thing. Look at the Nordic model - far supersedes any other models present today.
