Gyroscopic Instruments in 3D

Your attitude indicator, heading indicator, and turn coordinator center around spinning gyroscopes. Using simple gimbals, these 3 instruments display essential information to pilots.

The level of quality of the Gold Seal Flight Training videos is truly “next level”. I hope you will do one on the pitot static system.

I understand how rigidity in space allows for the gyroscope to remain stable in space, but what does precession have to do with the functioning of these instruments? Each explanation says the force is felt 90 degrees in the direction of rotation but I still have no idea what that means or how it applies

In the real world, inherent rigidity in space is not absolute. Gyroscopes are susceptible to the effects of acceleration which can perturb that rigidity, and cause the gyroscope to assume a different spatial orientation. If the acceleration is strong enough, it can tumble the gyroscope altogether. If it is of less strength, it will likely result in the precession of the instrument, manifested in a ninety-degree rotational direction from the force vector. There are many good YT videos that can explain this visually, which might make it easier to understand. The cockpit instrument called the _attitude indicator_ not only contains a constrained gyroscope gimballed on only two axes, but has a self-erecting/correcting device that combats the effects of acceleration that act upon it while in actual use. The attitude indicator maintains the gyroscope’s rotational axis aligned with local gravity at all times, and if it couldn’t do this, then it would be useless to the pilot.

@cardinalRG well son I've logged over 5000 hours of flight time in my career before I retired. I actually have the credentials to make these remarks. I'm sure, like most of these kids, you've done nothing but live your life behind a screen. This is why you don't possess the ability to grasp the understanding of this information being presented in this video.
